I've started to notice a pattern on here. One that I was arguing didn't exist not too long ago. At the elevator gate SHITE.
Nearly every single video from this channel with a woman in it has 10-90% dislikes. Most of the ones with men in are at around 1%.
I know that what this COULD be is just coincidence. Maybe all the women aren't very bright? Or have unpopular beliefs? Even the erm... ones against nazi-esque feminism... or um... ah. Oops. Please don't let Rebecca Watson be right. -_-
They're hardly all irrational. The 'asking a girl out on a date' issue is a fear of awkward social situations.
Back to the video: She says absolutely nothing worthwhile. Okay, I learned that the hebrew language (nearly extinct anyway) has two words for fear. Something I will surely forget before tomorrow.
Shes discussing fear a human emotion. As far as i know science doesnt full understand emotion. religion may be a foolish tool to use to help overcome fear, however it is something that helps. like a child getting reasurance from a parent when comfronted with something percieved as fearful.its better than no input....even if it may be misguided.
Is it necessary to go on and on with these "magic" Hebrew words? Why can't she just say that there are different kinds of fear. She could start with rational and irrational fear. Words in any language do not and never did contain magic. Perhaps it is the traditional fear of saying the name of God in Hebrew that is the basis of this lecture.
@jordandlee22 They're raging against her because she learned something from a religious person--a rabbi--and almost everyone here is apparently as intolerant of religious people as fundamentalists are against those who don't agree with the fundamentalists. Atheists and agnostics are apparently just as narrow-minded as their greatest foes.
@superclaydude Everyone is narrow minded, that's the nature of an opinion. it's whether or not we choose to be a bigot and deny the validity of other opinions (whether we agree with them or not) that makes us fools
I think the fear people of Abrahamic religions feel is not awe of a divine presence, but horror at what a creature will do to you for possibly no reason at all.
@TopGunOriginal Yeah I must have been tired when I wrote this, to not mention Judaism's lack of an afterlife. I think I wrote it in the comment originally, but changed it and forgot to add that back somehow.
@TheLonelyImmortal I disagree. I have never liked the term "God-fearing" yes, God amazes me on more levels than I can describe, but I do not fear Him. Nor do I have to have someone to blame for all the bad things that happen in my life. But since you are probably atheist/agnostic going from your name and comment, I think we're going to have to agree to disagree.
@perrid13 ill give you that it would be incredible if such a bing could exist. hell, a guy greater than the universe required to make the universe without any amount of time to do so beacause time isnt made yet would be prety amazing. it would also shatter the laws of physics and chemistry as we know them. kind of like saying the cake was always there but its a miracle you could bake cookies. its like a human existing before the atom. it just doesent happen.
why all the dislikes? As Far as I see it this woman is just comparing descriptive terms of fear from a different language to help people understand how to get over there irrational fears... I think this is insightful to anyone who has trouble with anxiety or might has a friend who has trouble with anxiety.
i had a kneejerk to her use of the godsalesman and the hebrew. tired of all the mystical crap and israeli fascism... however,
i kept listening and the minutia seems well thought out to me. i've often limited my own lizard brain reaction by re-terming my fear as apprehension. since all thought is based on our ability to express it in language, these types of mental actions can tone down deep seated emotive forces.
@monkeyrocketsurgeon I disagree. Thought is not based on language. Otherwise we'd never have any problem explaining anything. We experience fear as a result of a perceived threat or a negative outcome. Whether the threat is real, imagined or exaggerated, fear can never be dismissed as simply a feeling of awe.
I clicked for some bad assed Bene Gesserit wisdom and got some bimbo blathering on about her rabbi?Talk about bait and switch."fear is the mind killer" is a Dune reference.Don't bait me with that and then give me newage.
I thought she was going to have something intelligent to say about fear, like what causes fear, how to deal with it, what parts of the brain are associated with fear and how they work. This is just stupid. I don't even know what point she was trying to make, and apparently she isn't even right about these Hebrew words.
@bchplse There's a part of us that wants to cry at the Lion King even though we know the reaction irrational. That's the autonomic nervous system (ANS) - your 'gut' brain. Almost none of us have full control over the ANS. Often, it's hard to tell whether the fear we have is gut-based or intellectual. It's usually a mix. She's saying try to parse whether your fear is mostly intellectual/real or irrational/gut-based. If it's gut-based, gather serenity from knowing your fear is irrational.
fair enough to people having a voice on this channel and being able to say what they like, buuut i was expecting some advice on how to allleviate stress or fear in difficult situations so i'm a little disappointed... and i also find it highly amusing if there is only one meaning for fear as the top comment suggests :)
I like this. Fits with Steven Pressfield's concept of "Resistance."
“Rule of thumb: The more important a call or action is to our soul’s evolution, the more Resistance we will feel toward pursuing it.”
“Are you paralyzed with fear? That’s a good sign. Fear is good. Like self-doubt, fear is an indicator. Fear tell us what we have to do. Remember our rule of thumb: the more scared we are of a work or calling, the more sure we can be that we have to do it.”
@XXXXNanoXXXxxx That won't get rid of fear. It will lessen it perhaps, and make other things better...but fear will always remain. And, rightfully so.
Didn't you see that episode of Batman? Where he becomes "fearless?" It's good to have fear.
Its just cuz she used the words "rabbi, sacred, divine, other worldly, mysterious, and Hebrew" that got all the atheist's panties in a wod, that are subscribed to this channel. This does make total sense if you dismiss those words or put a different meaning behind those words. I like it, it resonates with me, I don't care if the interpretation is right cuz I don't care about religion, I get what she's saying, whether she has a PHD or is some christian missionary sent by Sally Struthers. I get it
the fact that people come on to BigThink and thumb down videos solely because they're are religious in nature is disgusting and unfitting to someone who claims to be a clear thinker. Just because someone's premise that they operate on differs from yours and mine (i would not consider myself strongly spiritual, if at all) it does not entitle us to disregard it.
OK WTF I'm Israeli and my mother tongue is Hebrew. Now WTF is she talking about? "Pachad" she (pronaunces it like an idiot) is just "fear" nothing more than that -_-
"Yira" should be more like "Yera" but what ever....it is just the biblical version of "pachad"
No body says "yera" -_-. everybody says "pachad" when the word fear is being used.
and as much as I know there is no difference in meaning just like there is no difference in meaning between "dad" and "father"....its just about formality
@maorvanu Well, thanks for that. This sounded like bollocks, so I am glad I read the comments; saves me some time.
Haven't you ever talked to a foreigner and told them that things meant something different just to make them look stupid later when they try sounding pretentious in a youtube video?
@maorvanu Just curious. Are you a critically-acclaimed, published and deceased rabbi? Forty years ago, the word 'Spirituality' in English meant merely 'the body of the church', pertaining either to all members inclusively or its leaders. The word spirituality in English has a much more 'fuzzy' meaning today. Is it possible the meanings of pachad and yirah/yera (whatever) have changed colloquially in Isreal in the last forty years too?
@maorvanu -- Are you a peer-credentialed professional linguist specializing in Hebrew, both in its historic and current uses? I'm asking because words change like landscapes - gradually without many of us even noticing. And is it 'No' to both, the former or latter question?
@gr33nman " words change like landscapes - gradually without many of us even noticing" I know that.
"Are you a critically-acclaimed, published and deceased rabbi?" No.
" Is it possible the meanings of pachad and yirah/yera (whatever) have changed colloquially in Isreal in the last forty years too?" The word yera is not in use for hundreds of years....Again, it's a biblical word.
@maorvanu Perhaps it's in use in Jewish literature or in the yeshiva, in that case, many words have many meanings so it's meaningless to even talk about it.
there is actually a difference between yirah and pahad - the latter is just your common fear; yirah is like anxiety and reverence at same time. and it's rather strange that she didn't use this word in her speech.
All over America, people have come together to join hands. People who believe that human life is absolutely too important, too valuable, and too precious to be controlled by fear. Hello, my name is Jim Cunningham, and welcome to controlling fear.
@risbysarwar if it wasn't for science we would be still looking up at the sky and wondering why god is raining on us or not raining on us. You continue to seek spirits in the unknown I would rather seek the real answer.
What the fuck is with this interpretations of fear? Fear is irrational it has no use, it's a mind killer. Preachers on the other-hand uses fear to control little minded people like the speaker of this video.
@oneirishpoet I don't have a monkey mind as humans are apart of the hominidae (great apes) family. I was just saying that I wanted quality information not this type of nonsense.
science shouldn't be the only medium deployed in the explanation of reality. Atheistic restrict themselves to only science, a narrowing their scope in this complex, intricate universe.
@risbysarwar No, we're not eliminating other possible correct solutions. We're eliminating useless, fluffy garbage that only clouds the truth about reality. Any other "medium" other than science that claims to know the truth consistantly demostrates that they are only subjective opinions about reality, and are thus, completely useless for actually understanding anything about reality.
@JayJayAbels Who ever said that this was strictly a science based channel? Furthermore, philosophy has its uses when it comes to adjusting our way of thinking about/viewing the world around us (and make no mistake, the way in which you think about things matters very much so). I'll admit, I find religion to be a bunch of crock, but I find this philosophy on fear in particular especially useful on days when I'm not feeling quite up to snuff.
@JayJayAbels If you can't even look passed a few mere terms tossed around here and take away the merit of what has been said, - but must instead discard everything for your dogmatic-like rejection of religion - then I am afraid you are at a loss. Take the good and leave the bad I always say, that's my 2 cents.
well what did you expect would happen? Youtube is filled with pseudo intellectuals who think they are smart for freeing themselves of organized religion. They basically believe whatever science tells them. Eintein wrote about these types of atheists and was probably a big reason why he could see how wrong it was to be one.
If it's only wording the basic Idea is still valid, swap a few of the 'sacreds' divines' and 'other worldlys' for beutifull or amazing or whatever suits you better and the idea is a great one.
I can't think of anything "sacred" but the Truth, which has so far only been unraveled to us by science and philosophy. (not really sure about the overlap there)
If you were to go by sheer numbers of what people believe, the cow may be the next sacred thing in this world (as followed by over a billion hindus).
Others : The kabbah (most likely a meteorite), The vatican/papacy (a worldwide mob) ,
Big think is not just about science. That is one part. The whole idea (according to the name "big think") is for people give there opinions on a topic. It is not for anyone here to say weather divine "things" exist or not and she shouldn't be hated on or thought to be stupid for her beliefs. This web site is to find out about other peoples belief in a hope to be enlightened. Big Think is open to more then just scientists and I can say I got a lot out of this video.

Me neither.

@gr33nman No.

" Is it possible the meanings of pachad and yirah/yera (whatever) have changed colloquially in Isreal in the last forty years too?" The word yera is not in use for hundreds of years....Again, it's a biblical word.
maorvanu 2 months ago
@maorvanu Perhaps it's in use in Jewish literature or in the yeshiva, in that case, many words have many meanings so it's meaningless to even talk about it.

@maorvanu
there is actually a difference between yirah and pahad - the latter is just your common fear; yirah is like anxiety and reverence at same time. and it's rather strange that she didn't use this word in her speech.

Atheistic restrict themselves to only science, a narrowing their scope in this complex, intricate universe.
risbysarwar 3 months ago

Ixandius 3 months ago
@JayJayAbels If you can't even look passed a few mere terms tossed around here and take away the merit of what has been said, - but must instead discard everything for your dogmatic-like rejection of religion - then I am afraid you are at a loss. Take the good and leave the bad I always say, that's my 2 cents.
Ixandius 3 months ago
well what did you expect would happen? Youtube is filled with pseudo intellectuals who think they are smart for freeing themselves of organized religion. They basically believe whatever science tells them. Eintein wrote about these types of atheists and was probably a big reason why he could see how wrong it was to be one.

If it's only wording the basic Idea is still valid, swap a few of the 'sacreds' divines' and 'other worldlys' for beutifull or amazing or whatever suits you better and the idea is a great one.
Drinapropriatetouch 3 months ago
I can't think of anything "sacred" but the Truth, which has so far only been unraveled to us by science and philosophy. (not really sure about the overlap there)
If you were to go by sheer numbers of what people believe, the cow may be the next sacred thing in this world (as followed by over a billion hindus).
Others : The kabbah (most likely a meteorite), The vatican/papacy (a worldwide mob) ,

Well... that did't fit the channel's name!
