You know.. I hope Steven Spelberg is reading this. You are capable of directing all genres. You are soooo capable of directing musicals. How about 42 Street or Anything Goes?? Come one man.. You did a outstanding job doing Anything Goes. Please....
I always thought this as export the best jazz American music. Is it the dialect of Hong Kong. In thse days Hong Kong was free and the rest of China was under the tyranny of communism. Now we're all under tyranny what a coincidence, and just like the depressions of old we have all these great musicals.
@AlexBlackRecords Actually, the original Indiana Jones films take place in the 1930's. At that time, China was still under control of a Nationalist government. Although unpopular, it wasn't tyrannical as the Communist leadership which took over in the 1950's was.
I agree. One may not agree with her artistic choice, but it was clearly deliberate. One has to give her that.
Personally I didn't have a problem with it.
What irks me is how many other interpreters of the standards dismember the songs, destroying their melodic line. To wit, any number of wannabes on American Idol.
it was sung in Mandarin....on the bonus disc of the Indiana Jones Trilogy box set, it specifically says that Kate Capshaw had to learn the whole dance and the song in Mandarin.....
@bomen168 Actually it's shanghainese. A dialect found in Shanghai and surrounding areas. It's fairly distinct from other Chinese languages and dialects.
@MetalSnakeUtah I was told it was shanghaiese by a colleague who was born and lived in Beijing until he was in his 30's. But I'm sure wikipedia is far more accurate than someone who actually knows what they're talking about. Also they state that it's shanghaiese in the "making of" on the DVD. You're probably right, though.
@robotwolf don't mind the idiots that think they know everything and are stupid enough to believe everything they read its a waste of time it'll probably go over their heads

Shame, great author...after all, who doesn't want a "real woman"...like Celia?
"Of course Celia shits! Who doesn't? And how much worse if she didn't."

I'm pretty sure the song is translated into Mandarin. The dialogue used by Indy, Lao and his sons is Shanghainese though.
