Maybe if this car does well, other manufacturers will see that there is a large market available and design their own EVs. Once enough companies are making EVs, maybe gas stations will start putting fast charge/battery swap things on their sites. Once THAT happens, it will be the beginning of the end for petroleum based fuels.

The ratio of operating cost of the Tesla to a similar car (assuming 20 mpg and $2.50 per gallong) is about 1:6. The S costs about 2 cents per mile to operate vs the other vehicle's 12 cents. That's gas alone. Maintenance for an internal combustion engine is much more expensive because of all the moving parts, internal systems, etc., so that leans the advantage to the S (or even the Roadster).

Juicing our cars up under huge solar panels, zero pollution, would be grand.

What I love about electric cars is that they don't cause either gas OR noise pollution! Hope to see the day when I can not hear a highway from miles away..
