@completeswiftie yeah... we call it university... our entire schooling system is different.. basically when we're 16 we either go to 6th form or college... it's your last 2 years of high school... we leave secondary school at 16.

@GuitarGangsterLike I may try to think of something, but to be honest, when you're a teenager all bets are off. On the drinking front, just don't drink with them, and on the girls front...I don't know how you can get forced into a relationship. But pro tip: all girls go crazy between the ages of about 11-17. It might be longer-I'll find out when I look back at my twenties - but so far that's the age range I'm sticking to.
This was great! It was short, to the point, and honest. It was really helpful to know all of this stuff, especially as someone who doesn't have an older sibling to turn too :]
"Here's all you need to know. Classes: nothing before eleven. Beer: it's your best friend, you drink a lot. Women? You're a freshman, so it's pretty much out of the question. Someone on your floor will have a car. Find them and make friends with them on the first day." - Droz
Do not ask your professor to go to the bathroom. Just get up and leave the room quietly, do what you have to do, and come back into the room quietly. You are an adult now, you don't need to ask another adult permission to relieve yourself.
@godsaveprudence This'll sound so silly, but I can't remember what I wanted to know before going to high school. I think the basics are the same: work hard, join a few clubs, and (my personal advice) start looking for colleges/their requirements EARLY. It's so much better to be prepared.
"Do" Pack a rucksack/backpack with all the essentials for your first night (including tea/coffee sachets, sugar, and UHT Milk) As if you have a loooooooooooooong drive you really wont want to be looking for a shop, or unpacking everything just to find your toothbrush :-D
"Dos" does not require an apostrophe. Sorry to be a grammar nazi! Normally a mistake like that would make me judge someone slightly but you are awesome enough to cancel it out. :D
I'm just wondering, why the University-Students in the USA (and in the UK?) live in dormitories so often, especially in shared rooms?
We have dormitories in Germany too ( I don't think that we have those with shared rooms, never heard of that), but most of the students just rent an apartment/ flat in the city or town they are studying in. A small one, if they live alone and a big one for "WGs" (shared flats?). Maybe it's because studying is mostly free, so we could spend more money for living.
@nimmermehr86 At some schools, you have to live on campus your freshman year. Also, most students don't have cars, and it's often the case that apartment complexes are too far away for people to walk to campus from their flats.
To all of us foreigners its really confusing with the scholar system thingy in the US, UK and so on. How old are you generally when you go to college? And can you keep on studying on college all your life or is there another option after college? or is college it, that's all you get.
@IQzminus In America University and College are the same thing. It comes after highschool, and you begin the year you turn 18 (I'm Canadian so I'm basing this knowledge off of mass media haha). As I understand it, College in the UK is more like what we would call highschool, the 14-18 range?
@IQzminus Elementary/primary school is for kids aged 5-12ish, then they generally move on to middle school (at some schools middle school and primary school are combined) for age 12-14. High school follows middle school for four years: age 14-18. Teens then have the option to apply for college where they can usually earn a bachelor's degree in four years. With a bachelor's degree they can move on to graduate school to earn either a master or doctoral degree. Then you're ginished with school! YAY
Advice: don't eat the cheese-covered "casserole" on Fridays. You've already eaten everything in it. Mattress pads are helpful. Water-bottles are helpful (you can fill up with milk, soda, lemonade or whatever in the cafeteria). Respect public areas including all sinks bathroom and kitchen. Get involved. It's more fun, stretches you as a person, but try not to get over-involved, especially if you're already taking 18 hours. And OH YEAH - GO TO CLASS. Skipping class is not cool and will hurt later.
Thanks for the extra advice. I'm moving into my dorm in two weeks. I knew most of what you said, but it was nice to hear it again along with some extra advice :)
And when she says drugs she also (i hope!) means do not take things like Adderall to put out more work. That goes in hand with taking on too much. I helped counsel kids in freshman year and the biggest question I got was if Adderall really works. :(
The best advice I got was from my neuroscience professor, I didn't have to know what I was doing four years down the road, just what I was doing next.
Any advice for graduate students?
Oh and study abroad or take a service learning trip, domestic or international...best two choices of my undergraduate education.
@llc88 That sounds decent, yeah! I wish I could advise graduate students, but I'm applying for graduate school this year, so I can't give much advice! And I definitely agree on the study abroad front :D
Study Something you enjoy. I know a lot of people who are studying accounting or finance just because the money is good, but they think its the dullest thing in the world. I started off as a Bio major (pre-med) and changed to History because 1. i love history and 2. I'm really bad at math - there ain't no way I'm passing Calc.
I totally related to the meals/snacks bit, my eating habits suffered so much this last year because of my Uni schedule. this video was really spot on.
Hi Bryarly! I'm a junior in highschool, but I really want to apply to some universities in the UK. Do you know anything about applying and/or how I need to prepare to get in? Thanks, and this video was great :D
@RubikCuber1 I only applied for a semester-long exchange, so I'm not sure how you would go about applying as a general student. Typically, a UK university will have a particular page with advice for international students. Good luck!
Also, is sharing a room in the US what pretty much everyone does?
Because that's almost unheard of in the UK. A friend of my twin had to share a room for a short while because there weren't enough rooms at her Uni for everyone. D'oh. But people drop out so it wasn't for too long.
When I first clicked on this video I thought it was called 'Postman Do's and Don'ts' and was all like "oh that crazy Bryarly at it again" but surprisingly do's and don'ts about uni were much more helpful than ones about postmen seeing as I'm about to start uni. Thanks!
@godsteeth1911 I think there's a flaw in the "Making friends" section, I start Uni in 2-3 weeks and There is this facebook group for "class of 2015 blah blah" and Assuming that the majority of my class is here these people are already getting to know each other but I refuse to join it just because it seems a bit ludicrous because I'd have people talk to my human face first then a picture of it
Dammit Facebook! Stealing people skills faster then MMO Games could ever dream
@DoesntUpload I had a really long shpiel originally - mainly, that I've seen what drugs can do to people. Alcohol is so prevalent that I felt giving a blanket :DON'T DO IT would do nothing, while drugs are more of a may or may not. I had a friend die in April, another is recovering from heroin, and the people I know with less dramatic consequences completely changed - for the worse. I wouldn't wish those fates on anyone.
Do: make friends with Russians, because they are the most badass people ever. My friend is the kind of person that you NEVER see doing any work, yet he does about ten times more than me. I'm pretty sure he has magic powers. Oh, and medical students: actual magic powers, I swear.
Don't: ...eh, feck it. May as well try anything once or twice, just don't get addicted to shit and don't sacrifice your degree for anything. There's no point paying thirty grand to party for three years.
@QueenOfTheAubergines Hey, upper school's like secondary school right? All I can say is don't worry about what others say about you. I was awkward and nerdy too, I was an art student and that made me bottom on the social scale, but just find a few good and loyal friends if you haven't already got them and you'll be fine, just don't change for anybody :) hope that helps
@QueenOfTheAubergines If it's similar to High School (is it?) then don't worry too much about it. Pretty much the same rules apply - there's always going to be SOMEONE like you out there. Joining a society is a good way to find them. Good luck : )
oh, and something I love about Australia - we don't have to worry about fees until we've finished our degrees. the government steps in, and we pay it back (the exact amount, no interest) when we've joined the work force.
Don't sign up for 8:00am classes and don't select classses that say prof tba. You will usually get a TA that doesn't speak English well. Those are my additions. Oh! don't play any MMORPG or FPS because I have seen them consume people and make people fail all their classes.
@godsteeth1911 While I was in college of the seven roommates I had at least one of them failed out each semester because of Diablo II or Halo I. Of course I had a different set of rommates each semester, and it was almost a decade ago when I started college. I had to unplug my computer and only use computer labs, because I was addicted and got sucked into those games to easily. They really are "time sucks" and many college freshman don't know how to resist.
@rhidiculousrhiannon but you can! while most don't, i have a few friends who live on campus in sydney. so if it's something you really want, you can. i know for a fact that several unis offer on campus housing. i personally don't, because its ridiculously expensive and my home is only a half hour train ride away, which i'm okay with.
@thelonelamp Yeah, seconding this. I kinda considered accepting a spot at UniMelb just so I could do that... but ultimately I am too poor, so stuck with UWA.
I remember my first year of college. I was awkward, shy, and intimidated by nearly everyone I came in contact with. But as the year went on, I became more confident and started making new friends and learning new interesting things. Now, I'm going into my fourth year of college and I am gaining more friends and more confidence in myself with every passing year.
This video made me think back to my first year and I enjoyed remembering the good times. Thanks Bryarly. =)
Hey there. Very thorough video. I can neither fault nor add to it. As an Australian second year university student it is interesting to hear about college in other countries. College in the states sounds a lot more fun to be honest, but perhaps that is just a hollywood myth. I have one question, although it is entirely unrelated to uni/college. Ummm, this is going to sound weird, but where is your accent from?
I've completed my first year of university (I'm from Russia). It was really awesome. My advice is - be active and take opportunities whenever you see them. It will help you alot to find yourself.
After my first year I understood what my future career goals are :^)
By the way Bryarly, your videos are getting better and better. Keep moving forward<3.
Great video :) but alcohol is more dangerous than say, weed, by a landslide. I wanted to say do not eat copious amounts of nutmeg- I'm sure it tastes disgusting and will sooner have you vomit before you trip. Don't chew flower seeds or anything stupid to trip either, it doesn't work well, and if it does it won't for long. They may be "legal" but that doesn't mean it isn't stupid that college kids are buying all the nutmeg from local supermarkets see the brighter colors of their dorm rooms.
I was going to add a couple things but your list is really complete! My only beef is that you're pretty serious about people not doing drugs, however nothing bad was said about alcohol. Realistically alcohol is a very dangerous drug which rivals many others in terms of present and future health effects. Here is my advice: DO, do everything in moderation, DON"T let any one person, activity or substance negatively affect your life.
@Jantles You're right, I should've hated on alcohol as well. But since it's so common, it made more sense to me to say, Be responsible! When I said drugs, I was thinking along the lines of: acid, mushrooms, crack, heroin, etc. I had a friend die in April from an overdose, so I was thinking more harshly of drugs than anything else.
@godsteeth1911 sorry about your friend, i agree with you on the "hard" drugs you listed, theres just a certain green leafy plant which is tamer than alcohol but gets a bad rap
ADVICE: Apply for every Scholarship/Grant/Free money you can get your hands on, don't rely on only a few that you applied for, chances are you won't get all you apply for. The more you apply for the more you are likely to get. College is expensive the less you have to pay the better. I live with my parents too because that saves on money and I don't have to deal with roommates. I will eventually go to a University away from home but until then take advantage of anything and everything. :)
so would I lol, as it is I have to take out loans and such, but my debt is very very low. I think it helps that I am attending the cheapest junior college in the state. Junior College is a really good idea too, for those who are really nervous about full Uni and for a cheaper education that is way worth it. I am getting a very good education and at a very low rate, and they help you out more with scholarships I have noticed too.
Do- save your money and do something with your life"
I don't know about that message... For example I would never have discovered my passion for architecture had I not gone to college, also you are saying that all the nurses, doctors, scientists, engineers, and teachers didn't do anything with their life, which is hard for me to believe.
@Jantles Just a quick hint. If you quote people like that (i.e. repeat large chunks of their comment in your own), your comment will automatically get flagged for spam. (And it makes no sense to quote him, since we can already see that you replied to him.) Now it looks like people downvoted you, which is most likely not the case :-).
@Thormodo sorry i'm used to commenting on videos where there are hundreds of comments made per hour so that it is necessary to quote them. thanks for the hint!
thanks for the help!

Um...does anyone have any advice for starting Upper School? Because I'm awkwrd and nerdy and rather scared :/
QueenOfTheAubergines 7 months ago
@QueenOfTheAubergines Hey, upper school's like secondary school right? All I can say is don't worry about what others say about you. I was awkward and nerdy too, I was an art student and that made me bottom on the social scale, but just find a few good and loyal friends if you haven't already got them and you'll be fine, just don't change for anybody :) hope that helps

@xxwolly2 thanks :)

@QueenOfTheAubergines If it's similar to High School (is it?) then don't worry too much about it. Pretty much the same rules apply - there's always going to be SOMEONE like you out there. Joining a society is a good way to find them. Good luck : )

@godsteeth1911 thanks :) Yeah, year 9- age 14

The only drug I can not argue against is Adderall. =/ Sorry. It's helped me finish a few semesters. I know that's disappointing!

oh, and something I love about Australia - we don't have to worry about fees until we've finished our degrees. the government steps in, and we pay it back (the exact amount, no interest) when we've joined the work force.

this is strange, but i love your voice. it's so feminine, but not at all garish or silly.

@thelonelamp I do get this a surprising amount of the time - thanks!

Don't sign up for 8:00am classes and don't select classses that say prof tba. You will usually get a TA that doesn't speak English well. Those are my additions. Oh! don't play any MMORPG or FPS because I have seen them consume people and make people fail all their classes.

@jtburney I would be lying if I said I hadn't played my fair share of WoW.

They really are "time sucks" and many college freshman don't know how to resist.

i wish here in australia we boarded like the US etc.
rhidiculousrhiannon 7 months ago
@rhidiculousrhiannon but you can! while most don't, i have a few friends who live on campus in sydney. so if it's something you really want, you can. i know for a fact that several unis offer on campus housing. i personally don't, because its ridiculously expensive and my home is only a half hour train ride away, which i'm okay with.
thelonelamp 7 months ago

Ummm, this is going to sound weird, but where is your accent from?
mikewazowski333 7 months ago
@mikewazowski333 You know, I've gotten that before - I'm an American, born in GA.
godsteeth1911 7 months ago
@godsteeth1911 .. where's GA and what on earth does that stand for?
rhidiculousrhiannon 7 months ago
@rhidiculousrhiannon Another hint for freshmen: do learn how to use Google properly , it can help you a lot with finding the correct literature :-)..
If you Google for “GA America”, you will find that it stands for Georgia, a state in the US.
Thormodo 7 months ago
@rhidiculousrhiannon It is in the American Southeast and it stands for Georgia.

They may be "legal" but that doesn't mean it isn't stupid that college kids are buying all the nutmeg from local supermarkets see the brighter colors of their dorm rooms.
smashrobot3ZO 7 months ago
I was going to add a couple things but your list is really complete! My only beef is that you're pretty serious about people not doing drugs, however nothing bad was said about alcohol. Realistically alcohol is a very dangerous drug which rivals many others in terms of present and future health effects. Here is my advice: DO, do everything in moderation, DON"T let any one person, activity or substance negatively affect your life.
Jantles 7 months ago
@Jantles You're right, I should've hated on alcohol as well. But since it's so common, it made more sense to me to say, Be responsible! When I said drugs, I was thinking along the lines of: acid, mushrooms, crack, heroin, etc. I had a friend die in April from an overdose, so I was thinking more harshly of drugs than anything else.
godsteeth1911 7 months ago
@godsteeth1911 sorry about your friend, i agree with you on the "hard" drugs you listed, theres just a certain green leafy plant which is tamer than alcohol but gets a bad rap
Jantles 7 months ago
ADVICE: Apply for every Scholarship/Grant/Free money you can get your hands on, don't rely on only a few that you applied for, chances are you won't get all you apply for. The more you apply for the more you are likely to get. College is expensive the less you have to pay the better. I live with my parents too because that saves on money and I don't have to deal with roommates. I will eventually go to a University away from home but until then take advantage of anything and everything. :)
theGreenPrincess16 7 months ago 12
@theGreenPrincess16 Definitely should've mentioned this - if it wasn't for scholarships/a Pell grant school I would be up the creek without a paddle.

@godsteeth1911
so would I lol, as it is I have to take out loans and such, but my debt is very very low. I think it helps that I am attending the cheapest junior college in the state. Junior College is a really good idea too, for those who are really nervous about full Uni and for a cheaper education that is way worth it. I am getting a very good education and at a very low rate, and they help you out more with scholarships I have noticed too.

@Uldemar "Don't- go to university
