@gasparovkastro The album was not written in Germany, it was written in Southern Ireland, back in 1989. They ripped off an unknown songwriter and she was devastated.
@dublinbarterclub So, basically what you are trying to say is something based on rumours without any kind of evidences? Is that it? Because I've asked you for facts and you still not gave me a single one.
@gasparovkastro What sort of evidence did you have in mind? There was another girl with her in the bar that night by the name of Linda MURPHY who accepted a payment of 2,ooo Irish pounds to agree not to testify against the band. The unknown songwriter was betrayed by everyone that night. In 1993, Linda Murphy's boyfriend heard about this and put pressure on her to do the right thing in some form, even that late in the day. So Linda Murphy phoned Principle management and told them.
@gasparovkastro Principle management did not believe Linda but the unknown songwriter was at least happy that she went as far as admitting what she had done. Aidan was the name of the boyfriend who persuaded her to do the right thing. He was morally offended by the betrayal and asked Linda why she had done it. She said she was broke and needed the money. The thing is, she was not that broke. She had a very good job in Apple computers at the time.
@gasparovkastro Is this what you had in mind in the way of evidence? This is not unknown here in Ireland. I rang a newspaper called the Irish Star and they told me that this is widely believed to be an urban legend. Funny thing is, my brother heard all this in Dublin in 1989, that is two years before the album was released. Paul Mcguiness was told about it 2 weeks after it happened.
@dublinbarterclub ..um, what's going on here? no link that i can see posted here(?), you instigated the accusation and now in this comment you're the one calling it an urban legend?
@dublinbarterclub on second read, you're saying that the urban legend view is the inaccurate one?.. like gasparov, would still like to see the link and some more evidence
@JBraden I am saying that the urban legend viewpoint of this whole thing is the wrong viewpoint to take. Which link are you talking about exactly? I am merely writing what I know. I have no idea what other people know about this who have posted it online.
@dublinbarterclub When you wrote several days ago "This is the original song," in the context of your saying U2 did not write the original, I was naturally expecting that you'd shared with gasparov some version of what you're claiming to be the true original. Now he's told me that you didn't and you don't even seem to be aware of how that comment's most likely to be perceived by anyone reading what you've written.
@JBraden The format and tune of the song are original in the sense that they did not change anything about the song when they recorded it. It was co-written with them and the unknown. Now do you understand what I am saying.
@JBraden No, absolutely nothing. Everytime I ask to him to show an evidence wich is not based on rumours, urban miths or questionable newspapers articles, he says absolutely nothing.
@JBraden There have been no newspaper articles on this because it is so hard to prove so long after the event.Irish media will not print without proof, as is their legal right.
@dublinbarterclub well, you may think it's common knowledge becuase you know other people in Ireland that believe the same thing, but realize that the vast majority of people viewing this video and reading these comments have probably heard nothing about this, and to expect any of us to believe it without providing any sort of proof at all is pretty close to ludicrous. That's not meant as an insult, just a statement of fact. Surely you can understand this point.
@JBraden I totally understand what you are saying. I am merely bringing what I am saying to a wider audience. I do not expect to be blindly believed nor would I want to be. I want you to question and wonder. That is better than blindly believing or blindly dismissing. By the way, type the words'' Did U2 rip off'' into Google. Wait and see what comes up. I did that yesterday to see if anyone else knew about this and it was interesting.
@eLegantLywasTed7 i hear you, it could be better.. though i've listened through all of the "AB covered" album once so far, and do think the Killers cover is in the best half. It's got some punch in the second half, but many of the real rockers have been slowed down with no fire.. I'll have to listen a few more times though. The Jack White cover may be the best.
@JBraden i just hated it... Brandon Flowers is a great singer, but he lacked the soul that Bono carries this track with... loved the "So Cruel" cover from Depeche Mode though, probably my favorite one from the album...
@eLegantLywasTed7 ok, you may not like hearing this, but after about 8 listens, the Killers' Ultraviolet has really grown on me — I don't know the Killers' music well as a point of comparison, but past a slow (and Queen-esque, as I read from someone else, and agree) beginning, it really picks up, true to the spirit of the original but the bass, organs, piano and vocals give it the distinct feel that a justified cover must have, showing the brilliance of the song through a new lens..
@eLegantLywasTed7 only thing I can say that you might like is i'd love to have seen what INXS even with their new singer, might've done with it, or anything else on the album for that matter
Hands down my favorite song from a platitude of dozens on my list. The video is extrordinary as well from there amazing backdrops live. I think the kids at RISD,RI do these/develop the scenes and video feeds, correct me. Where can we get DVD's of just the videos and background effects, that would be a coup in itself. @shooboxx thanks! you sound like a serious U2 fan.. please believe that no exploitation of Ali was intended on my part — I'm sure you're aware of "The Sweetest Thing" video — to me Ultraviolet is one of many cases of a U2 song w/ multiple interpretations — a human love, God.. I went with the idea of Bono writing to Ali — (Larry and the actress, those clips are probably more of a stretch(?)) — when i read about Ali and Bono, especially in their young days... i'm not sure there'd be U2 without Ali
The Bible is a grand wee book, and I appreciate that Chrisendom is the basis of your society, but for God's sake get off your f**king high horses, let them run wild as they should; read some other fecking books and cop on. Its friggin shameful.
@JBraden and is there a way for me to stop my comments appearing at the top of the comment stack? I was walking today with my Walkman and this song came on... seriously, I nearly stumbled at the majestic-ness. I cant describe it too well, like it took my breath away. Like it filled the skyline around me... it was wild! Excellent sounding earphones also helped in this.
i loved the fact that this album made its way into the most recient tour....this is when i first fell in love with u2 and to have it brought to centrestage in the most receint shows was awesome. I can hardly wait until July can't wait to see this tour again!
I miss the old days. Great music, people, clothing, films, everything. Now all that was great is lost, swallowed in what has come to be "great" today. I miss the old days, its too bad I wasn't there for the best of it all. You can dream to relive the past but it will always turn out the way the ending of the book Of Mice and Men turns out. Your dreams get destroyed by reality, you can't go back to the past, you can't relive the past. Life sucks if you miss the old days.
@jas22: I had the exact same experience, except for me, I was found when I bought the soundtrack from the movie -Until the End of the World- by Wim Wenders. That was 15 years ago! The CD changed my life.
reddyredd - i couldnt STAND U2 any longer prior to 'Achtung'. i was very sick of the "Joshua Tree" songs, and i still dont like them very much. but when i WON an "achtung baby" CD from NBC's "Friday Night Videos", i saw them in a whole new light. this is probably one of my top 3 albums of all time.
@guitarhockey22 I love your comment.Like you, I believe you need to see talent in real life to truly appreciate. You will not see better than U2,unless Elvis or the Beatles come back.
@guitarhockey22 same here...the live show makes you into a fan, even if you are just like "they're ok i guess" when the concert is over you are a huge fan
i hadn't heard this song in almost 10 years (introduced to u2 in 2000) until they came to town in October, and was I impressed. At the time that I listened to it, I never gave it much thought, but after listening to it, it is hands down the most beautiful love song I have ever heard, better than With or Without You and many others in my opinion.

i loved the fact that this album made its way into the most recient tour....this is when i first fell in love with u2 and to have it brought to centrestage in the most receint shows was awesome. I can hardly wait until July can't wait to see this tour again!

I loved the joshua tree, but the absolute best U2 album is Achtung Baby, it was perfect, and ultraviolet is one one of the many classics on it.

I'm feeling the same way... I miss the old days...

@jas22: I had the exact same experience, except for me, I was found when I bought the soundtrack from the movie -Until the End of the World- by Wim Wenders. That was 15 years ago! The CD changed my life.

Of all the songs released, this and So Cruel were just as good or better. AMAZING album. Much credit to Brian Eno too.

reddyredd - i couldnt STAND U2 any longer prior to 'Achtung'. i was very sick of the "Joshua Tree" songs, and i still dont like them very much. but when i WON an "achtung baby" CD from NBC's "Friday Night Videos", i saw them in a whole new light. this is probably one of my top 3 albums of all time.

Never really liked U2 all that much but i just saw them in concert and was pretty amazed at how good a show they put on
guitarhockey22 2 years ago 31
@guitarhockey22 I love your comment.Like you, I believe you need to see talent in real life to truly appreciate. You will not see better than U2,unless Elvis or the Beatles come back.
bustertypsy 1 year ago
@guitarhockey22 same here...the live show makes you into a fan, even if you are just like "they're ok i guess" when the concert is over you are a huge fan

Why Sarah Brightman?
amxrtdket 2 years ago
i hadn't heard this song in almost 10 years (introduced to u2 in 2000) until they came to town in October, and was I impressed. At the time that I listened to it, I never gave it much thought, but after listening to it, it is hands down the most beautiful love song I have ever heard, better than With or Without You and many others in my opinion.
ROCK ON U2!
Orion1108 2 years ago 4
Yeah this song was vastly underrated. Now its getting the attention it deserved. This song proves why U2 is so great.
