why is it that all the really talented violinists hold their violin ever so slightly wrong? if you look at the hand on the neck of the violin, his thumb sticks up when it should be further down, i have a very talented friend that does that too (not that it matters)

@Daftbananana some people just arent able to hold it "properly. It's only what thy teach you but it isnt some do or die fact that you HAVE to hold it that way. It's all for visual aesthetics for the most part. I forget the name but some famous violinist had to hold his violin very weird because his fingers were fat and stubby :o

Vengerov is MUCH more expressive than Menuhin. His technique is awesome... And his personal interpretation is original, nearly unique.

It doesn't make much sense to me to compare this performance to menhuin or kogan, etc.

He is just playing around here, not actually playing violin taking advantage of his skills the way he undoubtedly could.

It sounds more like a divertissement for show purposes than a true performance.

There is also another interesting way to compare Menuhin and Vengerov in thsi piece of music.

You simply open a new window in your browser. Youtube allow you to do that when you are logged in.

Then you put the windows side by side. Check when they start playing (sometimes it differs a few seconds). And try to start them as close as possible!

Musically it does not sound good. But it makes it possible to compare.

Menuhin is fast and strong. Vengerov slow and weak-also he makes silly "faces"

I do personally think that this song sounds better with the more extreme tempo and dynamic changes as Vengerov has done. Then again, he's playing it as a solo piece... With an orchestra, it sounds good as written, in my opinion.

the double stops are sooooooooo hard!

@TheGuyWhoJustShotYou learn them half at a time, if you get what i mean. you know, top line and bottom line separately, then play them together. made it much easier learning the stops for me. actually, it works for pretty much all stops. same sorta thing with quad stops-- just learn it as if you were playing it as a separated chord, one note after the other, then put them together. =]
