This show was the first thing I ever saw Helen Hunt in. However, the original Twilight Zone only featured one story per episode. The Phillip DeGuere version in '85 (years after Darkroom was broadcast) had multiple stories.
This was a great show..to bad it didn't last longer...my favorite episode was the one with the guy who used his ham radio to save his fathers ship from being sunk in WW2....only too cause the Germans to win the war...the one with the toy army men coming to life was a classic also....
@FestusH1873 Holy crap...I remember seeing the promo for the army men one and was totally bummed when I missed it. Completely forgot about that until I read your comment.
I haven't seen this in 30 years. Literally. Glad you posted it because I couldn't find it anywhere. This shit came out right after Tic Tac Toe with Wink Martindale.
Creepy intro and I remember some of the episodes of this anthology show were pretty scary. Of course, I was in junior high at the time, but it would be interesting to see if the show is still scary now. Thanks for posting this little blast from the past.:-)
yeah i remember this show. i was four or five when it came on t.v.when i seen the intro just now, it literally gave me chills.but, does anyone remember a movie that came on around the sametime where a teenage boy and teenage girl wandered off to this house and the hose pipe came alive and strangled them, the house was possessed or something.
The movie you described sounds like a 1981 made-for-TV movie called "This House Possessed". I don't think the couple gets strangled, though. The hose moves through the grass like a snake, turns on and sprays them, scaring them off of the property. Do you remember the breathing fireplace and the shower of blood in that movie? Great stuff.
@jsun322 -- Yeah, I remember "This House Possessed." Trying to ride the tide of "The Amityville Horror" franchise, but softened for TV. The girl getting the shower of blood still runs through my mind every now and then... when I'm enjoying a shower ;-). The breathing fireplace I have forgotten, but I can imagine. I believe Parker Stevenson was one of the leads, haha!
I remember one episode of this with a guy who hated this cat and it ran under a bed and he wanted to kill it then he looked under the bed and there was a woman under there instead of the cat! Very creeeeepy! Anyone remember that episode?
I watched all of the episodes of this show as a kid. Loved it. Never understood why I liked horror shows as a kid since I was always scared of the dark. When I would have to go to the bathroom upstairs I would have to have my mom or dad walk me up because I was too scared. haha I remember an episode of this where the little green plastic army men came to life and attacked and killed this guy who lived in the house. That episode is all I remember.
Yes, I remember the army men episode where they all come to life, tanks and all. That was my favorite. I also remember a creepy one where the guy goes in to a Fun House on an amusement pier and the clown chases him around.
Does any one remember an episode that had a some kids that had to make it home before dark or the boogie man that lived under somes bed would get them and the boogie man would never haunt the person whom's bed he slept under...I need to find that so i can watch it...if any one know please get back to me..
That was an episode of the new "Twilight Zone" called "The Shadow Man". Good luck finding that episode. I remember that one too.... the boogieman had a cape and black hat. It was really the only good episode of the New Twilight Zone they made. The rest were usually pretty bad.
I was about 7 years old when this series aired. Although there were only a handful of episodes, boy did it make an impression on me! Thanks for posting this!
Another reason to love YouTube! I can't believe I actually found this series!! I kept looking under "red room," but no luck. I saw this series back when I was ten years old...Very Creepy!! Thanks for posting.
I loved this show when I was a kid. If I remember correctly , it came out on Sundays before another show called Today's FBI. 1982 had some real good TV shows and cartoons back then. I miss the 80's!!
I recall seeing previews for the army men episode, but sadly, wasn't able to tune in. Another episode that no one has mentioned (it was one of the last) was paired with the 'shrinking man' story discussed earlier in this thread. It was simply entitled "Guillotine," and was set during the French Revolution. Dealing with a rather unorthodox love triangle -- a young imperialist sympathizer, his cunning lover and the resident headsman -- the ending of this tale is one of Darkroom's finest moments.
The debut story (with the suspected vampire & the twist ending) hooked me from the get-go -- I was 14. Man, remembering the final shot of that episode -- the spooky cabin by the lake with the full moon reflecting off the dark water... the voice of the fatally curious girl shakily shouting "No... NO!" that progresses into a scream, ultimately overshadowed by the unmistakeably bloodcurdling howl of a werewolf... still gives me glorious chills down my spine.
This show only last for about 6 or 8 episodes, but it was sure memorable. Not sure why they cancelled it, except for the possibility that is was considered just too damn scary for TV. I never missed it if I could help it, though. James Coburn was the consummate chillmeister host!
The reason for its cancellation was low ratings. It was up against Dallas (on Friday nights) on CBS which was the top rated show on television at the time.
I can upload the episode where the Army Men comes to life but I don't know if its copyrighted. I'm not from the US and I'd hate to lose my account if things happen.
O dude, if you have the army men eppisode I would looooooove to see it. I remember that one the best. If it is copy rited then they will just take it off. No worries.
THe movie "Nightmares" with Emilio Esteves was a series of stories originally written for "Darkroom" that were deemed too intense to be aired on broadcast television.
Another episode told the story about a poor guy who was constantly bullied on the street.
his life living in a shabby apartment on peanut butter and crackers ended when he put on a leather jacket and clotheing from a suitcase full of stage clothes.
I believe you are referring to the episode "Make-up" in which the main character (played by Billy Crystal) is a loser and finds a make-up kit that he uses to turn himself into different personas, one of them being a tough guy. Not only does the make up change his appearance, but it changes his physique as well.
Does anyone remember an anthology show from the early eighties where the opening sequence showed spooky lights swirling through the woods at night and coming up to the camera? it's not the twilight zone or night gallery, or night visions. I've looked everywhere forever.
This outstanding chiller series was the Friday night lead in to ABC-TV police series "Strike Force". My favorite episodes were when Jocelyn Brando guest starred as a vengeful witch. Also, Lawrence Hilton Jacobs guest starred as a vodoo cursed victum. They also remade a Boris Karloff "Thriller" episode. James Coburn was great as the host of the show.
WHEN are they going to release cool shows like "Darkroom" and others like "Ghost Story/Circle of Fear", "The Invaders", and other classic Sci-Fi/Horror series on DVD?
They just don't make stuff that's this scary anymore. They've lost the "mood" that was captured by that creepy '70s/'80s photography. Now shit is all done with CGI, never looks right, and has none of that scary '70s graininess. I miss the good old stuff.
I loved this show when I was a kid. My favorite episode was when the toy soldiers came to life and attacked a man. I wish I could watch these episodes again.
I've always been convinced that episode might have been based on a Stephen King story called "Battleground." Same principle, but the army guys were a curse put on the main character, who was an assassin, by the mother of a guy he killed. My favorite Darkroom was about a guy who discovered an Egyptian syrum he thought would cause his enemies to "diminish before him." But he took it, and turned out it shrinks whoever drinks it. He was tricked by a rival. Creepy!
I've been looking 4 this! I remember a lot of the eps! The vanishing cream makeup ep with Billy Crystal, LOL The one with Sherrif Lobo & the voodoo chick, the toy army soldiers...awesome! I wanna see whole eps!
Do you think you can load that one up? I have not seen that one since I was a little guy and would love to see it again Talk about a blast from the past.
I remember the one where a couple girls almost run over a guy in the road late at night. One of them becomes convinced he is a vampire and later breaks into his home. She finds he was no mirrors and what not and calls her dad, I think, to tell him. It ends with him helping her off the phone and finding out that he was not a vampire at all--but a werewolf. : )
@Metaldog67 Yes and I remember the end of the episode he looked under his bed because one of her cats ran under it and when did it was the old lady's head instead, cut to him being dragged under the bed and his mom saying from outside his room "hey (whatever his name is) what does the cat got your tongue?" I couldn't look under my bed for years after that....great show
Man that is the CREEPIEST piano playing ive ever heard! Makes my hairs stand up. cant hear it at night! LOL!
