@timharris I know this comment is a little old, but you might want to check out this video: watch?v=cFGPCTMp2cw It's basically KDF vs Kendo for you right there, although I think the eastern swordfighter is using a mix of kendo and aikido.
@johnmeadowcourt : There's lots of English variations, but the most common is probably "To each, his own.". Basically, each person has their own interests.
Unfortunately in the U.S. there is no sense of importance in history and these things are looked down upon by the general public as being childish.
@VikingWannaBe51887 Hi! We started with Joachim Meyer, then moved to Lichtenauer (via Speyer, Danzig, Lew, Ringeck, hs3227a). We try to primarily study everything what is accesible:)
@schatzperson thanks. I do think that any activity of interest has its value for the person who does it. In our group (besides the core activities) we favour duelling on epees, foils, rapiers, daggers and everything ever invented for fighting as well as fighting with longswords.... Neverheless, longsword rocks the most!;) cheers
@Priest105 hi! lenght and weight varies from sword to sword:) but the longswords we use are approx. 140cm/1,85kg. The "real" ones of similar lenght vary from 1,5-2,5kg (ca), depending on the other dimensions.
Never heard about a 2.5 kg longsword. I heard about 1.2 kg longswords, Irish designs, but 2.5 kg should be really unwieldy for some of the fencing moves.
Great stuff. The energy and intensity in these clips is an inspiration for all 'German longsword' fencers and sets the bar very high. You guys should consider putting together a longsword DVD: it would bring a very refreshing and different perspective to what is out there already. I'd buy it! ;)
@CollegiumInArmis thank you very much! so far we haven`t considered production of a DVD. But who knows, maybe one day:) good luck with your Meyer studies;)
excuse me for my Inglish that is verry bad. But I juste want to say you : this is génious. In France There is verry hard to find and practise this hobby. Thank you verry much for videos ! It's good to see that !
Quite nice, and nice energy, but I don't see the point in raising your hands in the thrusts between 0:05 and 0:24. I would rather lower them instead, to cover the line to the opponent's sword. Even if you have just thrust him through the throat or chest he might still manage one last slash, and it seems completely unnecessary to leave yourself open to it. Otherwise - great stuff, good editing.
@3ng4n Thank you for your comment! The issue you raise can be perceived in many various levels (e.g. energy, velocity, tempo, waich/hert) and is hard to be solved by words:) I find the only suitable generalisation in "... cut on his sword, is he weak, then shoot your point to his head or chest". Let us say, in the greatest level of abstraction, he`ll have to do a-parry-for-his-life instead of cutting my arms, so it doesn`t really matter in that tempo.
I sort of agree, but by raising your hands you not only leave the arms exposed but the entire body. And since there is no discernible advantage to raising the hands I don't think it's a good idea to train oneself to do that. Lowering your hands you will still shoot the point to his head or chest just as well, but will keep yourself a lot safer against a nachschlag.
@3ng4n There actually is an advantage in strenghtening your positions. You also have a different portfolio of actions coming out from that kind of stabbing. It`s rather a matter of fuhlen and tempo. I would have stayed in a bind or lower (and wind on his sword), if he was stronger or more relaxed to do a contra-action. Please, check the video in slow-mo, mainly the abnehmen stuff. But we are getting too much hypothetical, I hope to meet you one day;)
I agree, it's very hard to discuss these things properly without being able to demonstrate physically what one means. Perhaps we'll meet at some international event? I will be in Vienna, Dijon, at Fightcamp and Swordfish....
I'm with 3ng4n, there is a definate danger of a nachschlag there, and raising hands doesn't strengthen your position, as you're not in the bind. If they void the thrust by ducking their head to the side they can cut to your arms. I've both done that and had it done to me in free play.
But still, this is excellent work. Your handwork is superb.
Slovakia and our fencers are now dominant Kunst des Fechtens fighters on YT.;) Nice vid, but I would try to move your center of gravity more forward. Thanks.
Very, very nice control. Well done!
