@DeathTapping You can order the 'Complete Vocal Technique' book at CVI's website completevocalinstituteDOTcom
You might be interested in the German language version, and that you can also order at amazonDOTde. The book is also available in Danish, Swedish, Dutch, Finnish and English.
bullshit bullshit and bullshit dude ive been screaming for years... i know alot of bands.. worked with alot... there is no 100% relaxed way to scream... there are ways to make it easy and less hard on yur throat but its always gonna leave your voice abit raspy
There are today 80 Authorised CVT Teachers who all can teach you this. At CVI we have had more than 900 singers attending longer courses, and I have yet to meet someone who cannot learn it. You can to!
Read the book with step by step guidance, sign up for a course or a solo lesson (skype possible) or take a look at the videos from the youtube channel 'videosfromCVI' where more people demonstrates this technique.
I'm a lyric voice, and I've never been able to yell (like while trying to talk to someone in a car with the windows down on the highway) without my vocal folds quickly becoming sore. Is my voice just not fit for the singing style Skillet uses? Or, is there a different way to achieve that sound without actually pushing out more air?
Hi a74c11p. You're probably speaking and singing mostly in the vocal mode 'Neutral'. The metallic modes we are using to yell or sing more powerful, are therefore untrained in comparison with Neutral. So you might not use them correctly, and that can cause vocal problems. But everybody has all 4 modes 'build' in their voice. If you train properly you can learn to make all sounds in a healthy way. Best wishes :) Henrik
Yes the CVT book covers all that. When you have read the book - and tried the different sounds out for your self, you might want to get a singing lesson with an Authorized CVT Teacher and ask some questions: "Am I doing this right?", "Can't get that Curbing, what am I doing wrong?" etc...
The CVT book is available in English, German, Dutch, Danish, Swedish and from this week also in Finnish language.
I have searched high and low for 8 years on how to produce that distortion... it is the, simply put, the vibration of the false chords? Argh... I have a 4 octave range, yet cannot produce this sound. How?! What is the sensation? What is the correct combination of muscles to "align" my voice-box like that? What are some exercises I could utilize in helping my develop this?
FYI: I have been classically trained, as well as SLS trained singer
Dear hippyglory. Thanks for your kind words. Knowing that the techniques are being used and are helping singers is what makes us keeping on working. So your comment is just like a shot of fresh energy. Thanks :) Henrik
Dear zoozooyou. Yes, the false vocal folds are active, when producing these sounds. The false folds play a major part in producing many sounds, including the 'metallic modes' as described by Complete Vocal Technique. The metallic modes are used by all kinds of singers including singers who do not use these extreme effects like for instance opera singers. And the extreme effects can, if done correctly, be made again and again without any wear. We have hundreds of singers who can do it :) Henrik
CVT is foremost based on real-life situations, and the aim has always been how to solve singers technical problems in a clear and understandable way. Now the techniques real life efficiency is well proved, we are starting to focus more on the scientific side.

Dont use the throat. You use your diaphragm (stomach) if ur throat hurts your doing it wrong

Skillet uses distortion and rattle, but "yells" while doing so. Can this sound be created safely and, if so, the CVI could teach it to me?

Hi goldchocobo333
These techniques are described by Complete Vocal Technique (CVT), and there are step by step guides in Cathrine Sadolin's book of the same name.
You can also visit CVI's vocal tech forum and discuss further.
