Does he really expect us to believe that the "barbarian hordes" had no idea that the buildings of Rome were built by men? They couldn't have been that stupid.
Well not immediately, but as the centuries wore on. One should however never underestimate ignorance throughout history, after all there are many who don't believe that man has walked on the moon, even though that only happened a few decades ago.
There is an extreme bias in this series, I am not going to say racist at all however there is a very Eurocentric point of view. How can any series about "Civilisation" be made without addressing Egypt, Sumer and Ur, Persia, the number system 0-9 which was invented India, Algebra from the Middle East, the preservation of mathematics by Arab civilisation. Is it because during this period in antiquity Europeans were still living in tribes and huts? Civilisation without Egypt=WOW!
@theone1087 They did not forget the other civilisations. They had time constraints after the title had already been prompted.
On Wikipedia it says:
"It was Attenborough who prompted the title, but due to time constraints the series only covered Western Civilisation. Clark did not "suppose that anyone could be so obtuse as to think I had forgotten about the great civilisations of the pre-Christian era and the east", though the title continued to worry him."
@theone1087 It doesn't seem to get through to you that no one gives a tinker's damn about your ranting about Egypt. Cannot you undrstand that this is NOT about Egypt or Sumeria or Atlantis, or any other more than half imaginary "civilization.Egypt would have remained a backwater colony in any case. Egyptians have been excellent sociological and cultural thieves though. I will give them that as they have proven themselves very adept at the practice. They do need to thank what is now Iraq though.
