I don't understand why people are so up in arms about the I Am Autism video. We support Autism Speaks and their mission, which is to fund Autism Research and Awareness. If something can be done to enrich my child's life outside my own abilities, I will support it! The fact remains...the statements at the beginning of the video are truth. Yes, the degrees vary and they are things that are not easily spoken, but the bottom line is, like it or not, they spoke the truth.
I too would love your child's life to be enriched, so they could become high functioning enough like myself to make a film like this - which stands up for their own kind.
Please explain to me (from the view of person with Autism) how can it be wrong to help promote awareness and possibly a cure someday? If something can "unlock" my son's voice, I'm all for it!
Aha, PROMOTE AWARENESS AND POSSIBLY A CURE SOMEDAY? That sentence is a paradox and the crux of ourobjections.
Promote Awareness - wonderful. Improve anyones life? Brilliant. Cures? Aha, changing the brain, making people what they were not born to be? Going against their natures?
It is like youself being cured of thinking, acting and feeling 'female', however you would define that. Tricky, eh? You become like my Wife, profoundly Male thinking and rational without gut empathy
I see my son struggling, frustrated because he can't make the words come out of his mouth that he is trying to speak. I see him trying to make his body do things that take every bit of his will power to make happen. Am I to believe this is what he was "born to be"? Am I to believe this is his "nature"?
I work with non verbal Autistics here in the UK, people in that situation. We here believe in Person Centered Plans, in support and empowerment through 1 to 1 communication, in funding for individuals via the Autism Bill.
I am sorry. I have no solutions and can only tell you the truth. Yes, that is his nature. I have grown and many of us do. So there is always hope there. I am proof.
You love him, and you will come to know him for who and what he is. I am certain. Good luck.
There is a very large difference between a CURE and living successfully with Autism. Autism does not have to ruin anyone's life, but steps DO have to be taken to give your Autistic child the best chance at a happy and fulfilled adult life. I'm sure your parents, teachers and therapists would agree.
I'm glad that you're doing so well without that support @paulwady, but I think you missed the point of my comment. Videos like this and the information that ANAN and the discrimination letter are proposing imply that those necessary steps are not needed and that having Autism is simply a condition that should be accepted. As parents, we have to fight to make our children's lives better, and research into diagnosing, treatment, assistance or prevention is a major part of how we do that.
Basically, the closer you get to real Autistic people - in the flesh - the more what you say is true. Indeed, many of the bloggers here either have support, or need it in varying ways, or are like myself but know full well what you say is true.
It is the nature of this medium to be rather vague. The term CURE is now deeply stigmatized and no longer implies helping parents live with children, let alone helping them be less afflicted in any way.
If Autistics were 'value judgement functional', Autism Speaks would not exist. But because we are disfunctional, disabled, disturbed etc, it arises to change peoples very hearts and souls because they are 'not right'.
Next will be emotional women, Gay people who are camp, Ginger haired folk... See? I would love to see your children able to relate and function and feel, yes really.
But nature? Ah. Lose a finger you don't get it back. Very very cruel. You said it - PROMOTE AWARENESS.
The thing with a "cure" is, even if it could exist, it would be wrong to force anyone to take it against their will. There's no real way to prevent a parent from forcing their child to take it.
sick sick sick you should be ashamed

The music makes it too hard to hear the speech.

There is another version without it. Also, try the subtitles?
Thanks.

My prayer is my son promotes awareness every time his smile lights up a room.
While you and I might not agree 100% on Autism Speaks, I'm thankful for you and your voice. Keep talking!! =)

You simply don't have Autism. Do you?

No. I do not have Autism.

I have not got any teachers and therapists, and my parents are in another part of the country. I never needed them anyway.
Nonetheless, I agree with you completely Tikigenius. Thanks.

I dont believe that these comments blogs sort much out, but they seem to be great places for degenerating arguments.
There is a clear polarization online tween Aspies, and parents & those who want to do everything from cure to help. That's not good is it?
Please dont take any of these comments too seriously I think.

I watched this before I saw the "I am Autism" video - have to say yours is far, far better! You are quite right about the negativity in that film.

Splendid! I'm glad I haven't seen the Autism "Speaks" ad (being in the UK, I might not), but I have heard NOTHING good about it.

Yeah, seconded on the transcript. I can make out about as much as Charlie Brown can make out of what his teacher's saying.

With pleasure, and my apologies for the soundtrack.

Hilarious! Would you mind transcribing the text, because the only part I can understand is "I am Socks!" and the word "claustrophobia."
