this happens from time to time. another rail road will help out amtrack if there loco is dead and they are available. The Grand Elk did it here in Michigan not to long ago.
Railroads EVERYWHERE borrow power from each other. It is a very common practice since engines go into the shop quite alot for service/repair...your not gonna tell the customer "Well one engine went down so we have to wait till it gets fixed before we ship your materials, which are depreciating sitting in the yard"..LOLOLOLOL
Only cuz shitty little p42DC locomotives suck balls and have no horsepower whatsoever. They dont even look american! They look stupid nd fake. I say amtrak brings bak the sdp40f's! Whose with me??!!
I think Amtrak just needs some new Motive Power produced by EMD. Now that they got the 20V710 they can make a F50PHAC, or you can ask MPI to build you some MP40PH-3Cs.
@SouthShoreTrain Not true, you retard. GE and EMD both make good locomotives. Foamer railfans like you are opinionated and you don't know jack shit about locomotives.
@meccaturbo Really? Your gonna resort to childish name calling? GE makes theire locos with cheap parts and sells them for cheap so when they break, GE makes alot of money off of parts.
@SouthShoreTrain Not true at all. Why do you think EMD lost the locomotive race back in the 1990's? Railroads are not stupid for buying GE's. You are the one who is stupid, you moronic retard.
@meccaturbo Again, why resort to childish name calling? And why did you put " You are the one who is stupid, you moronic retard", when I never called you or anyone a name on here? EMD started loosing the race because they cannot sell their locos for as cheap as GE. EMD uses quality parts, which are consequently more expensive, and they have to pay taxes. GE saved a load of money last year because they didn't have to pay any taxes.
@SouthShoreTrain Simply not true. Show me a web link to actual data that proves GE's cost less than EMD's. Until you show me this exact information, your argument means NOTHING. And, that is not true about GE not paying taxes. How do I know? I'm a GE shareholder. And, retard, I also own stock in Caterpillar, who owns EMD. So, I'm not biased...I'm basing my points on facts. Unlike you, I'm not some dumb foamer railfan who knows nothing about railroads. Show me the info, you moron.
@meccaturbo Ok. I'm not arguing with someone who keeps calling me names when I never called anyone a name. I'm done with this. Do your own research because I'm not doing it again. I spent hours researching both pro EMD and pro GE sites and the pro EMD arguments are much stronger than the pro GE arguments.
@SouthShoreTrain Here are some links for GE's tax thing. h ttp://w ww.foxnews.com/opinion/2011/04/18/ge-got-break-taxes/ h ttp://w ww.nytimes.com/2011/03/25/business/economy/25tax.html
Now I'm not responding to anymore of your rude, vulgar, ignorant comments because I don't appreciate being called all of thoes names for something silly like this. I'm entitled to my own opinion just like you are.
@SouthShoreTrain More proof that you are using bogus info. Instead of citing pro GE and pro EMD sites, find some sites with actual locomotive data, instead of foamer railfan "data". Railfans who are passionate about one brand of locomotive are not an accurate source of information because they are biased. Find some websites that show actual locomotive cost comparisons and data such as breakdowns per number of miles traveled. Without this data, you don't have an argument.
@meccaturbo "If it's DC traction, your looking at a little under 2 million for a new locomotive. If it's AC traction, it's around 2.5 million or so. That's for 4000-4400 HP. GE is slightly cheaper than EMD. You could get a older used 3000 HP engine probably for around 400-500k." h ttp://in.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080820055035AA9daLS
Its the third answer down on yahoo answers. I know it may not be 100% accurate but its finals week and i dont have time for lots of research
@meccaturbo Yeah... and railfans also think railroads were stupid for dieselizing decades ago. They're hilariously biased (like the Ford/Chevy morons) and they think that carriers don't have entire departments whose job it is to study and decide which units fit their operations the best.
@fyadcorp Exactly. And stupid foamer railfans don't understand that when there are two locomotive manufacturers, you buy from BOTH of them so one doesn't go out of business and leave you with only one source. Competition is a good thing. This SouthShoreTrain moron is a loser who is more interested in his toy train "preferences" than understanding how railroads operate.
The best is when Union Pacific used the D&RGW heritage unit 1989 to pull the california zeypher over the Moffat route between Denver and Salt Lake City.
I think it was the Amtrak crew that was driving this train on this video, the main controls in the UP locomotive are somewhat similar to the Genesis units that Amtrak uses.
I was taking the Southwest Chief down to New Mexico a couple years ago when are the Engines broke down in the Middle of Kansas about 50 miles outside of Dodge city. so they had two BNSF SD40-2's haul us in to dodge city.
genesis's are worthless pieces of trash! always breaking down and having to be towed by a reliable freight train amtrak should by better loco's not garbage like this! whenever amtrak's garbage takes a shit a freighter has to haul the trash out of the way so others can get by
normally what happens is on that kind of train there are two amtrak P42's, but in these cases one of the amtrak engines fail so a UP engine comes from the nearest yard and helps the amtrak out
...and if the amtrak was late, that is probably why
Looks like Amtrak's lack of money for maintaince caught up with them. And cost them even more money! First of all why did the train only have one passenger loco? It might have been the only loco left, and they sent it out and it failed. UP will send Amtrak a big bill, extra crew with wages plus a surcharge on top of that perhaps 10% then a mangement surcharge, then there's equipment rental. The train will run late due to that freight engine. Pax will miss connections. Goes on and on!
A traveling engineer was the boss of the engineers. Now he has been renamed to some kind manager. He is also in charge of the tapes on the engine. Today the UP is not 6 hours faster. Infact on some past trips via the UP the train was 10 hours late! How times have changed.
i was on the southwest cheif at ABQ and the front engine died so it took 2 to 3 hours to get a BNSF dash 8 cw to pull the train. it was a very rare and cool experiance
@MacGyver0076 When Amtrak first started. UP used to ferry the 844 between Cheyenne and Denver on #5 and #6 the "California Zephyr. Which ran via the UP not the DRG&W. It was 6 hours faster, because it had a UP ATC system. I clocked the train many times at over 104 MPH across Wyoming. The passengers were completely unaware of the speed. This is before tapes in the engines. And things got ugly, cause Amtrak just could not be put out of business in the west!
@MacGyver0076 Years ago when the old freight railroads ran the trains. If you were late the dispatch would ask where you were? Then tell you to get back on time, sometimes a traveling engineer would show up at the next junction or yard or station. And if you didn't make up the time by then. He'd tell you to get out of that engineers seat. And he'd run 'em! The first order he had said he had permission to exceed all timetable, bulletin and posted speed limits!
What's with the music? Eh..anyways, nice video! Up north the UP actually runs a lot of diesel locomotives on Amtrak due to grades, and etc. Coolest lash up UP did with Amtrak was UP Heritage 1989 leading two P42DC's. Awesome-ness!
2001 and 2002, both SD70Ms. The 2001 says "Olympic Torch Relay" and the 2002 says "Salt Lake 2002". I got the fortune of watching both of these units pulling the Olympic Torch Train through Mesa, AZ in '02.
