Great to see the UK version featuring Fulton MacKay. A complete travesty that the tapes containing those openings were wiped and only bits like this still remain.
Is this the first version of the UK opening? Because in this version, the Captain is sitting at his desk with Sprocket by his side and in another version, the Captain is shown FEEDING Sprocket.
@hockeystick6789: To quote Uncle Matt..."The center of the universe is Fraggle Rock. It is thus called because it is a rock and Fraggles live there."
@beau99: Interesting. It would've been nice to see Red and Mokey doing the intro.
@lucygirl: The Gorgs. Really, they didn't want to eat the Fraggles. The "King and Queen"--Junior's parents--merely wanted to get rid of them and Junior wanted to thwomp them (i.e. hit them with his club, then have them as pets).
This was something I never missed for anything in life here in India, long back in the 1980s during my childhood. Good Old Days! I loved everything about it ! This opening theme was, is and will always be a part of life and flow through my body. Sending Love from India to whoever who loved Fraggle Rock. I'm going to buy this DVD.
I used to love this show, and was disappointed when it was axed early. Many people agreed that they should have kept this show, after all, Sesame Street and the Muppets ran for years. I want to produce kids' cartoons for TV in years to come, and I imagine many of them having an equally upbeat, catchy theme tune.
In 1982, following the success of Sesame Street, an organization of Ministers approached Muppets' creator Jim Henson about the idea of doing a Christian-Themed children's tv show, going so far as to make rudimentary puppets of Christ and St Peter. Henson said he'd consider it, but the idea was ultimately rejected. In 1983 the Henson-produced Fraggle Rock, a show that focused on a group of Demons living in the 1st circle of Hell, debuted. Later that year Henson was diagnosed with terminal cancer.
Kids TV shows have never been the same... Glad to find out that the boxset is now out.. Think a certain online shop will be meking a sale very soon.. ;-)
wasnt there a version of the opening where instead of Boober fraggle saying "down at Fraggle rock" Wimbly is the one and he has some type of tennis racket in his one hand and a ball in the other??? For some reason i remeber that one...i would love to see it again, as it brings back so many wonderful childhood memories of the good old days of the 80's.
I got the box set last year, What a wonder treasure.
@jeffdon4: That was the original opening to the "Terrible Tunnel" episode. Gobo did an opening for "Finger of Light" originally. And I am sure Red and Mokey did ones, as well, being members of the Fraggle Five.
@TherealRNO According to Karen Prell, Mokey and Red did do their own intros, but they were never used, and she was actually surprised to find out Gobo and Wembley's were used.
The thing is, with Gerry Parkes retired, I do think that the idea of having a younger "Doc"--or a young relative--would still be utilized, even if Sprocket is still there. Edwards is also trying to round up the original cast of course, but with Jerry Nelson (Gobo, Majorie the Trash Heap, Pa Gorg, et al) battling cancer, Jerry might have to just dub his voice. But, I am sure Karen Prell (Red) and Dave Goelz (Boober, Uncle Matt) are onboard, since they viewed FR as their greatest acheivement.
Jerry Nelson has cancer? Poor guy; dying is bad enough as it is, but some might prefer quick, painless, and unexpected to the slow, painful, and estimated time limit of cancer! What about Mokey's puppeteer?
Coming soon, It's "Fraggle Rock: The Movie". In it, the Fraggle Five venture out of the Rock into the human world they call "Outer Space". Be ready to dance your cares away once again...
Special thanks to all the people whose talents are...Down at Fraggle Rock.
And what's best of all was that The Muppet family appeared completely in "A Muppet Family Christmas", bringing together Sesame Street, The Muppet Show (and the puppet forms of the Muppet Babies in flashback), and Fraggle Rock.
ztslovebird: Well, the focus isn't on Doc or Sprocket (though they will be there), the Gorgs (unsure), Majorie and her shills Philo & Gunge (unsure), Cantus and the other Minstrels (unsure), and other characters. It's more focused on The Fraggle Five interacting more with "Outer Space" (i.e. our human world). I just hope the original message the show brought to the world isn't lost with this film.
How can they make a Fraggle Rock movie without Doc, Sprocket, the Trash Heap Marjorie, and/or the Gorgs? The Minstrels I can kind of understand because they are nomads, but everyone else is a HUGE part of the show! Are they keeping the Doozers?
ztslovebird: Oh don't worry. Even with the Doozers getting their own spin-off CGI series, the little green workers will be in the movie. Edwards is also trying to incorporate the Gorgs, which would be a feat in itself since the costumes were so large and since Richard Hunt--the original Junior--is no longer with us.
The Doozers are getting their own series in CGI, but are also making an appearance in puppet form when the Fraggle film debuts.
Kathryn Mullen has practically disappeared from Muppeteering, it seems, but Edwards is hopeful that she'll return as Mokey (but then again, four out of the core five isn't bad).
Awesome! Is the Doozer show going to be a kids show that anyone can watch, or a kids show that talks down to its viewers so badly that anyone over the age of 5 will want to tear their hair out?
Hmm, that's weird. But you're right; most shows are lucky to even get one member of the original team back after a waiting period this long.
@ztslovebird: The new show is going to focus on new Doozer characters and focus more on their adventures then how they co-exist with the Fraggles and Gorgs. The co-habitation is reserved for the Fraggle film, as well as the comics put out by Avaria for the Henson company (just like Boom! is putting out Muppet Show comics for Disney & the recent "Family Reunion" one brought back Skeeter as an adult).
@eisemanrenyardjake: It is real. The movie has just been suffering setbacks, because though Edwards (a Muppet geek in his own right) had written a satisfactory script, the distributor--The Weinstein Company--has put roadblocks to keep the film from being greenlit. The Weinsteins want the film to resonate more with an adult audience, which in layman's terms means that they want the movie to be "edgy", despite the fact that the Fraggles aren't meant to be like Shrek or Alvin & The Chipmunks.
Great to see the British version of Fraggle Rock again with the lighthouse and Fulton MacKay - all I have ever seen since is the US version, not that there is anything wrong with it, it's just this is the one I remember.
