@Han893 most of kenjustu and battojustsu studied by ninja are based on tradtional samurai artforms, they might have special methods but basicly most of ninja were samurai's or studied their methods. the scene seems quite authentic from a histrocal and martial art point of view ^^
@samuraiboxer29 Well this movie is very story focused. If you want awesome ninja's doing ninja stuff, I would suggest the movies Castle of the Owls, The Detective Fencer, Ninja Hunt (1964), Seventeen Ninja, and The Third Ninja. They have really awesome strait Samurai films as well and if you are a Sonny Chiba fan they have the best Streetfighter three movie set.
cool vid...does anyone know how many movies are in the Shinobi No Mono series? i know there is like 8, but i heard there was more...does anyone know about that?
@sunriser246 Because ninja ARE samurai, but they were usually ji-zamurai. The samurai class is made up of the higher branch, which were very privileged and wealthy, and the lower branch, where samurai didn't have too much money and were commonly farmers as well.
@Styxorcist The trick is sensitivity. You hold the scabbard at an angle with your thumb and finger at either side, and run the back of the blade between them to align it with the scabbard opening. Eventually the point will simply fall into the opening, then you know to sheath the sword. When you build up your sensitivity you can work on speed. Take it slow, I've heard of a guy impaling his arm for trying to sheath too quickly before it was ready :s That's all there is to it really though, hth.
I can do the basic sheathing technique you describe but I was more referring to how he transitioned from having a frontal grip to a reverse grip. He slashed the guy and went from a forward stance grip and ended up with a reversed grip just before sheathing.
I was meaning to say the transitional movement is what I don't get.
@Styxorcist Ah alright. That's simple but takes a bit of practice coz you need reasonably strong fingers to take the weight of the sword. From the standard grip you open your index finger and put it on the thumb-side of the handle, then swing the sword to the outside using the underneath fingers to support the weight, and the momentum to turn it back far enough to take an underhand grip again. If you have a light bokken try it, and you should see what I mean, it's hard to describe :$
awesome I have to see this Wakayam Tomisaburo is a acting legend. are you familiar with Shinobi No Mono movies (Ninja 1,2,3,4) It's a great realistic Ninja film saga
I love wakayama tomisaburo, he's always gonna be the man!!....but i just can't buy him as being a ninja, a badass ronin more suits him, cause to me it looks like he just threw on a big black sheet, lol....i dunno,,,,guess im more used to seeing him as the lone wolf. he is a badass swordsman, but as far as being as agile as a ninja (hiding underground, acrobatics, leaping from roof top to roof top) i just can't see him doing that..but its still dope to see him in this!!
I've read most of the Lone Wolf manga, later realising Wakayama plays Ogami Itto in the series they made, I agree, he doesn't suit a Ninja all that much, I've only seen him portrayed as Oda Nobunaga and Sanada Yukimura in the Shinobi No Mono series, which were really good if you've not seen them.
ive been trying to see shinobi no mono for ages!..just never got to it tho...yeaaa, as much as i hate oda nobunaga for trying to exterminate all ninja clans, and pretty much accomplishing his goal since there's only a hand full of schools left (not counting the ones remaining hidden!), tomisaburo fits the oda role perfect! i've heard that the 1st shinobi no mono film was the best out of all of them. hatsumi maasaki (togakure-ryu grandmaster) had involvement in the films' authenticity....badass
I bought all of the movies on dvd from some guy in America off eBay, they're pretty much perfect and agreed, I wasn't keen on Nobunaga or his successors, but yeah Hatsumi and his Sensei Takamatsu supposedly had some involvement with techniques the actors used, it is by far the best of anything Ninja I've seen!
Well in this movie he is more of a "traditional" type ninja in the sense that he utilizes disguise and subterfuge. He plays three different roles in this film, an old fortune teller, a cynical ronin, and a masked ninja. The movie is based more on intrigue than hardcore ninja action. Still very awesome.
I love those dildo masks!!! and one more thing, if he is not going to stab them in the back why wear all the fucking black? I thought ninjas are supposed to be very stealthy.
That ninjas don't use magic, they are pure physical attackers and use mundane weapons and gear, since ninjas have too low intelligence to cast magic, and art of ninjas, ninjutsu, includes only non-arcane skills such as fighting and asssassination. Ninjas can thou wear enchanted weapons and cloth armour. :P
It's just that a ninja really shines when using stealth and blades. Ninja magic has practically become like a God mod or cheat codes rolled up in a scroll and shoved up their ass.
As far as I'm concerned, what consenting ninjas do with their scrolls, on their own time, is their own business.
Naaaah. Most depictions of ninja magic, on the silver screen, printed page or kabuki stage, would put them on a par with America's spandex-fetishizing Super Heroes. If they were Gods, they'd spend all their time telling rednecks to beat their children and vote Republican.
And I don't see how my comment deserved TWO video game metaphors, ace...
Unfortunately the two video game metaphors were the only thing I could come up with in relation to ninja magic. But then again I'm more into old fashion stealth and blades above all else. Especially the blades.
Much respect to the hidden blades, but I still prefer the illusionary aspects of their magic myths. Shadow clones, substitution, invisibility, super sonic burrowing skills...these are the abilities I fantasize about for the 10 minutes out of every day that I'm not fantasizing about sex.
Still, I don't see much of a conflict here. Just as Hong Kong produces wuxia and traditional fu flicks, the Japanese also segregate the magic ninja from their more "realistic" cinematic brethren.
It really is a matter of taste. Some like Duel to the Death or Ninja's Weapon while others like Shinobi No Mono or Seventeen Ninja. I'm more literal minded so the magic stuff dosen't appeal to me as much, not that they are bad movies (ok a few are really bad)
Well, none are quite as bad as the poo poo platters offered up by Sho Kosugi and Godfrey Ho-bag...
If you haven't already, you might wanna check out The Third Ninja for another dose of old school shinobi "realism." Despite the fact that the "surprise" ending is stupidly given away in the title, it's still a good flick.
That way, everyone's happy. Occasionally, however, you get some misguided overlap, as evidenced by the introduction of spell casting kuro miko and kesa creeps halfway through the first season of Kage no Gundan.
Absolutely fantastic I really like Japanese movies, I don't understand how anyone can move so quick with a sword. The Bushido code is an interesting philosophy.
The problem with getting movies like this on e-bay is that you often get screwed over with such terrible quality. I've got some movies where they didn't even play. This is due to the dvd being a copy of a copy of a copy. I always find it better to get them from the people who actually imports and subs the movies. It is a little more expensive sometimes but you get the best quality.
youve got to be fuccin kidding me thats like sayin the police own mobsters any day... when the samurais needed dirt done, they didnt do it themselves.. they werent righteous either.. they were thieves, rapists, murderers, molestors. ninjas at least just killed niggas and kept it pushin... maybe once inna while take your bitch
