Q. I'm renting my first 6x12' U-Haul trailer Wednesday and I will need to unhitch my F-150 to load (my apt. is next to Exit gate.) Recommended stand (for tongue) as there isn't a built-in stand like the one on this video on the 6x12's I've seen @U-Haul?
It's in the U-Haul "Trailer User Instructions" (pg. 6) to: "When the handwheel becomes tight, move the tow vehicle forward slightly or push reward on the trailer TO ENSURE THAT THE HITCH BALL IS PROPERLY SEATED INSIDE THE COUPLER."
I was thinking about renting one of these to transport a tv 600 miles. Would this work okay with my 2005 ford taurus? And i'm not sure how it works. Would uhaul install it for me? Do i pay for anything besides the daily rental ($20)
this is a great video fianlly a guy that know what he doing.i rented a tow dolly from a uhaul place there wireing was all messed up.and the guy at the place would not even fix it.we end up having to fix this problem.
@happy4579 had a similar problem from them before too. All the wiring did something it wasn't supposed to do, and the people working there only knew how to unplug the wiring, then replug it back in, saying "does it work now?".
wow that hitch looks dangerous and prone to coming off if that square loosens off. in the uk the trailers we use have an auto locking hitch so once the ball goes into the hitch it snaps down and won't come off unless you hold a lever and lift the handle. also we don't use chains they have a small sort of winch cable on that attachs to the tow car chassis and if the trailer comes off it pulls the cable and jams on the brakes on the trailer.
@pureoffroad: U-Haul has been in the trailering business for more than 60 years. We have seen every hitch system you can imagine come and go - nothing we have ever used matches the performance of our current coupler and safety chain system. I apprecaite your thoughtful and candid comment about this part of our towing system, but I want to assure you and every other person who views this video that this coupler system is the safest and most robust in the industry. Thanks!
@UHTechCenter I had two ladies a service station come to me ,and told me that they needed help wit thier trailer from uhaul cause it was shifting back and forth out of control and thier was no wind at the time ,she said she was driving 55 miles per hour ,they asked me to check it out ,I found out the coupler came loose on it ,then thightened it up wit a pipe wrench ,I dont know much about these things ,but I figured thats what caused it ,but seeing this guy on here using his hand to thighten
@UHTechCenter Thighten this ,makes me wonder now was I supposed to thighten it that thight wit a pipe wrench or use my hands to do it like the guy on this video did ,just hope I didnt make matters worst that all ,cam you tell me if I did or not
@whatchaknow100 sorry I meant the hand wheel ,how thight does it afto be ,cause it was about to come off the threads when I looked at it ,it was that loose ,could the uhaul people have cause this by just thighten it wit thier hands instead of a pipe wrench
Of course, you'll to stay within your towing limits, but the Silverado should do great with any of our braked trailers. Also, I would definitely recommund using the tow/haul mode when towing our trailer. It almost always yields better fuel economy AND should reduce wear on your brakes. Good luck - happy towing!
dude, you could safely move a trailer home with that. My uncle relocated his trailer 3 miles away with an 86 f150. No problems besides a messed up bumper, and idk why he used the bumper
Crossing the chains is very acceptable and won't detract from the safety of a hookup. I've heard arguements that crossing is indeed safer, but personally I don't think that it is. Those arguements depend on very specific (and extremely rare) scenarios. If you follow the procedures described in the video and in the U-Haul Users Guide and don't cross the chains, your hookup will be a safe one. Thanks for asking good questions!
Remember, NEVER put the brake chain directly onto the clip securing the hitch pin because if the trailer separates and the safety chains break, the brake chain will just pull out the clip, AND you lose everything!!
Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching this video! You're correct in that safety chains that are too tight can conflict with the trailer's articulation - however, the chains as configured have plenty of slack as shown in this video. If anyone has questions on how to hook-up a U-Haul Trailer, please go to any U-Haul location. Thanks again.
it is way different to the uk trailers!!!!

" ... RECHECK THAT THE HANDWHEEL IS TIGHT." (Pg. 6, U-Haul TUI)
(I know this seems so basic but why not be super-safe? :-)

@soulweaponry I don't personally know about that specific hook-up or pricing, but if you go to uhaul.com you can find that information there.

i always wonder what the two black rubber things are behind the surge brake?
nahteconnor 1 year ago
@nahteconnor Those are bumper guards that protect the tow vehicle in teh event of a jack-knife situation.

@pureoffroad in case it falls off the safety chains would keep it close to the vehicle so no one gets hurt

when ever i rent a trailer the employee only twists the chain and does not loop it through or cross it at all
account0220 2 years ago
Not to worry. Twisting the chain is fine and looping is not necessary either. I like to loop because it helps take slack out of the chain.

This is absolutely true. All three chains need to be securely connected to the hitch assemby - the part that's bolted to the frame.
