It's an electric instrument called the theremin. I don't know exactly how it works, but it doesn't require touching in order to be played.

its a theremin, I think its a russian electronic syth instrument that generates a sound but haveing a human player some how involved in an electrical circuit (I think as the earth connection), one hand controls the volume and the other controls the pitch. by moving towards or away from the antenna..... (I think it was invented to demonstrate an advance in signal technology. As far as I understand it can be difficult to play as there are few visual cues as to where your hands should be

I remember when my mother bought a therimen as a birthday present for my father.. Evidently he always wanted one. So then I was educated about the instrument and - understandably - mind blown.

That one has a very clean sound (and looks EXACTLY like the one she got). It wasn't cheap.
