John Wayne WAS a great actor and one of the best actors ever as others here say; ridiculously, in his day he was ridiculed for not being a great actor. Time has proven that Wayne still steals the screen, holds the screen, dominates the screen -- and was a better screen actor than the Lawrence Olivier's and all the other critically heralded actors of his day.
Nope, it wasn't from 1969. 1971 is correct. How do I know? Big Jake was the first movie I ever saw in a theater. It was in a second run house* and I saw it the weekend of my birthday in October '71. It's been in my Top Five favorite movies ever since.
*Anyone else here old enough to remember second run theaters?
This intense scene lead to one of the most violent and suspenseful shootouts ever filmed in a western. It was purely unpredictable and there were some unexpected and tragic twists that happened.
You can call me father, you can call me Jake, you can even call me a dirty son of a b*tch but if you EVER call me DADDY again...I'll FINISH THIS FIGHT!

Couldn't have picked a better scene for a movie trailer; it's the best scene in the movie, but it doesn't give anything away, and doesn't tell you how it's going to end (aw, go ahead and guess... It IS a John Wayne western, after all). One of my all-time favorite scenes from a western, and if the whole movie were as good, it would be one of the all-time great westerns. Pretty good, tho, and worth the time just to watch the interplay between big, bad John Wayne and big, bad Richard Boone.
I remember when The Duke was invited to speak at a college campus back in the 60s when all the hippie/anti war stuff was going on and he shows up in an APC! Gotta love the Duke! BTW, they actually let him speak and asked him questions and didn't shout him down or protest him like they would today.
The thing thats so stupid about this, is when the dog and the Indian get killed no body seems to care. The dog saved his ass like 30 times but nobody cares.
The Duke took no guff in this one except from Maureen O' Hara, who was as tough as he was whenever they worked together. Richard Boone was always convincingly sinister as a villain and he's as mean as they come here. The man could play any character--good or bad--and make you believe it. Bruce Cabot as Sam was a good foil for Wayne--both of 'em grizzled like old leather, no-nonsense and suffering no fools. A damn good action Western, not like the run-of-the-mill action junk prevalent these days.
"You can call me father, you can call me Jacob, you can call me jake ..... you can call me a dirty son of a bitch, but if you ever call me Daddy again I'll finish this fight !"
My dad said in university they had movie nights. When a Wayne film came up they made so much fun of him. Pro tough/ pro war. I read if it wasn't for his social connections he might have made better movies [they just did the same old same old). Wayne himself said he only did what his 'Fans' wanted to see him as. In the right movie he was really fantastic! I just wish there was more that showed his talent.
now u understand, anything goes wrong anything at allyour fault my fault nobodys fault it dont matter am gonna blow ur head off its as simple as that!! dont mess with the duke u stupid bastard !
This movie was written by Harry Julian Fink who wrote Dirty Harry and was made prior to Dirty Harry. He was Clint Eastwood before Clint was. This is my favorite scene of any John Wayne movie.
John Wayne, Richard Boone they were not actors playing real men, they WERE real men who happened also to be actors. Big Jake is a true man's film, and my favorite performance by either man.
@ xwingclass, i just love this movie! my dad had Mr Wayne's attitude,,lol especially how he dealt with his son and the "daddy" situation,,lmao,,"you call me "daddy" again and i'll finish this fight",,wow where have all the good Hollywood pictures and actors gone? any more it is Hollyweird!!!
I always liked this scene & the music in it. I also was surprised when they did away with the Duke's lever rifle & gave him a shotgun. Made it more realistic for me.
I remember when this movie was first released it got a bad reception from a lot of the critics who accused Wayne of trying to cash in on the spaghetti westerns that were around at the time, but what did they know!. This movie was very popular with the public and did very well all over the world. As a matter of interest the boy who played Waynes grandson was his real grandson.....that is if I remember correctly. What a giant of an actor old Duke was and he was just as tough in real life..
this one is a great movie i definitely encourage everyone i know to watch this. awesome! good thing I can watch it for free in high definition quality at newWATCHmovies{dot}com.
John Wayne- a helluva actor and one of America's greatest treasures. Although, it is funny to think in this day and age he might well find himself on the side of Hunter S. Thompson (also patriot but an anarchist) in contemplating the weakening of this country by both socialism and faction.
"Now you understand. Anything goes wrong, anything at all, your fault, my fault, nobody's fault, it don't matter. I'm gonna blow your head off. It's just as simple as that. No matter what else happens, no matter who get's killed, I'm gonna blow your head off."
This was,and still is, an excellent movie. Though it was a bit brutal(the killing of a young boy in the beginning), it had some classic action and shootouts. Definite first rate vengeance and good ol' frontier justice! Neat trailer! I have it on both VHS and DVD.
As a matter of interest, the boy in this scene was played by John Waynes real grandson..I wouldn't mind to have had Duke as my ol' granpa!!...a great movie with two great old tough guys!
Ethan Wayne plays John Wayne's grandson in the movie, but he is actually his son in real life. The older dark haired guy who plays Wayne's son is also his real life son, Patrick Wayne. The blonde guy who plays Wayne's other son is Robert Mitchum's real life son, Christopher Mitchum.
