I think that distinction of best UM coach goes to Jim Tatum. He created the Oklahoma program before handing the reigns there to Bud Wilkinson. Tatum then went on to lead Maryland to one national championship and three undefeated regular seasons. All in about eight seasons.
What's embarrassing is that a large mural of Tatum garnered an apron around temp bleachers at Byrd Stadium a few seasons ago but the MD knuckleheads listed his name as 'Jack' Tatum. Morons.

I have no idea what their final record was in 1984, but it seems like that was one season where you just absolutely did not wanna play them. After all, no lead was safe, as my two favorite teams (Tennessee and Miami) found out the hard way.
@ErikS1975FreeState It depends on who you ask. If you ask someone who followed the team back in the 40's and early 50's, it would be Jim Tatum. If it was in the 70's, it would be Jerry Claiborne, who's final year in 1981 (which I was born before that season) preceded Bobby Ross and of course Ralph has to be figured in the discussion, although he had a little help from Ron Vanderlinden.
@cfoster81 Actually Ralph Friedgen inherited a lot of Ron Vanderlinden's players & they won the ACC in his 1st season in 2001 & went to the Orange Bowl. They've been a fairly small to major Bowl Contender since but haven't been a strong contender for the ACC Title since for the ,most part.
The music is kinda annoying but great photos
