  • All three of my great-uncles were RAF Spitfire pilots! Sadly all of them perished during World War II: two in battle and one on a test flight.

  • If you want to watch a good spitfire TV series, watch Piece of Cake. This was just ridiculess....the way he is moving the stick looks so stupid. He would either get a stall or damage his plane. Looks like he is fighting his plane instead of flying it.

  • Ridiculous. Also a comment to IWC, those airline pilots are actually able to buy a watch like this. First you make a 'pilot's' watch, then you price it so that only rich people can buy them, and then you piss off the rich pilot's? I know plenty of airforce pilot's that have become airline pilots later, and the job can be as easy or hard as possible. 10hours oceanic crossing, or an all-engine flameout above high terrain. Lets be thankful its easy most of the time. We get to live.

  • @pod355 The planes are spitfires...there were several variants of the spitfires and one of them has its wingtips clipped.

    Sorry to come over like some kinda smart-arse but clipped wings on Spits were NOT copied from Bf109's !!! (Marks A to E) . they were introduced to Increase the (roll rate) on lower flying marks to redress the superior rolling manouverability of the FW190 . Spits so equipped were used at medium to low altitudes for this purpose . Clipping the wings also allowed for a slightly higher top speed - I don't believe the clipped wings increased climb rates

  • Hmmm so your flying around in a brace of Spits when all of a sudden a blonde haired blue eyed woman flying a German transport aircraft (Junkers-52) is beneath you... instead of an easy kill they decide on foreplay... doesn't sound like the air force to me.

    If I was in one of those Spitfires i'd have shot the bitch down on my first pass.

  • Why are the wings cut flat on the ends. The spits were famous for eliptical wings.

  • @ballaratcastle Some Spitfire marks had Clipped Wings to make them dive and climb slightly faster (copied from German 109's who had clipped wings).

  • by the time a USAAC/AF pilot got to the European air war he had over 300 hours flying time, was a master of navigation, knew his engine like the back of his hand. Many BOB pilots had 10-20 hours TOTAL TIME on spits or Hurri's, against a foe that had many pilots with 1000hrs combat experience in Spain, France, Poland etc. so I think the arguement of which was "harder" is not open to debate.

  • Real Pilots don't exist anymore?? Tell that to the jocks who fly modern fighter jets. Flying a modern fighter jet takes far more training, knowledge and skill than it ever took to fly a Spitfire. Anyone who disagrees is an idiot who has no idea about the realities of modern air combat.

  • @ginjaninja1988 Still, modern aircombat is hitting a target from 30nm away with a radar guided missile. Computers warn about maxium angles of attack, stalls and over g's. They didn't have that in WW2, not to mention you had to get close to the target doing difficult manuevers without a computer to guide you.

    Anyhow, I think he was comparing a WW2 combat pilot to a modern airline pilot.

  • @javakris Even with the computer flying a modern fighter aircraft is 10 times harder than flying a ww2 fighter. Fighting in one is probably 100 times harder. Im not saying it is easy to dogfight in ww2, rather that things are faster, more complicated and deadly these days. U are pulling hi G's, flying the plane, managing the radar, managing the threat system, picking targets, maintaining awareness, trying to kill the enemy and intergrating into the bigger fight and doing it when seconds count.

  • @ginjaninja1988 Tell me, when was the last time two equally matched fighter jets went head to head? The closest was Desert Storm when a few F-15's smashed some Mig-29's to the ground and that would be nothing compared to facing a wave of Heinkel's over Southern England. Yes, modern jets are complex, but they have an entirely different set of issues.

  • @javakris Thats not the point. The point is that it is harder to fight today than it was back then. Thats plain fact. Flying over Iraq in Desert storm was no picnic and pilots described it as 8 minutes of horror and sheer terror. And you say "oh a few F-15's smashed some MIG 29's" well it wasn't as simple as that and it took years of training for those pilots to achieve that outcome; not to mention it could have easily gone the other way. A ww2 mission wuld be a pleasure cruise in comparision.

  • @ginjaninja1988 But controlling the aircraft is easier and more rely's on you ability to quickly do math calculations and use a computer then in WW2 which relied on true piloting skill and good judgment.

  • @ginjaninja1988 R U Nuts? I think you're so incorrect on so many counts I don't know where to begin. Of course my opinions are based on conjuncture, not fact, but with most flight surfaces and engine vitals being monitored by silicon chips, I find it very hard to believe that the job would be harder. Lets draw a parallel. Todays F1 cars are basically drive by wire machines, just like fighter jets. Lewis Hamilton got into Senna's 1988 MP4/4 and said he couldn't imagine driving it on the limit.

  • @BoogWar01 No I am quite sane. I am not incorrect. While fly by wire and silicon chips may have made it easier to fling a plane around the sky the fact is that fighting in a modern jet fighter is 100 times more complex and difficult than ever before. The G's pulled in a modern fighter are brutal, you have to manage missile systems, counter measures, radar, communications, threat tracking.... etc all while flying very fast and under alot of stress.

  • @BoogWar01 Read some books and look into what modern fighter pilots do and are required to know. In ww2 ur average pilot took to the sky after a number of weeks training. Today fighter pilots train for years before even being deployed; while the romantic notion of the old days of aviation and basic planes without advanced equipment conjours up images of hard flying it is commonly noted that ww2 fighters are some of the easiest aircraft to fly even today.

  • @ginjaninja1988 I've read that today's fighter jets are inherently unstable, and that flying them without computers is impossible. Training in wartime conditions is always going to be cut short, in peactime there is the luxury of selecting the best and giving them proper exposure to the job they face. I've also read that servos move the control surfaces of todays fighters, whereas in days of old they were moved by MUSCLE.

  • @ginjaninja1988 How many of you hotshots even know how to top rudder stall an aircraft that has a flame out or engine failure 100 feet off the ground and moving at stall speed? Can a jet even do that? And with your select-target-and-shoot missiles and ordinance (Do modern military aircraft even have guns?), and with computers having to vet every move made, I think the skill set is much more involved in a WWII fighter.

  • @javakris I thought it was all pushing buttons from 30ks away until I read one of Tom Clancy's books on the life of a USAF General. It aint no simple task. But yes i think he was refeering to airline pilots.

  • I am honoured to know Mary Wilkins who delivered over 700 Spitfires in WW2. She had blond hair too and never wore a flying helmet. The newly built Spits were delivered unarmed. One day, a Luftwaffe pilot flew alongside, and saw her golden locks. He just waived and flew away. Thats the way to scare the enemy.... and no silk stockings!

  • This was as hokey as it comes, but great flying in New Zealand, formation a little too close in the close up, stick jerking like that would leave you wingless

    My brother and I woud drop a short roll of TP out of two 150s over Biscayne Bay, cut it 5 times from 3,000 feet, no Spitfire but a great memory
