  • Wow!

  • so amazing. beautiful. glad to watch this again and again.

  • Painting was best around the middle of vid. Then gradually got worse. The life got squeezed out of it.

  • you are genius!!!!

  • THAT WAS SICK.

    raw talent.

man, I gotta start painting for real.

  • As a new artist I'm surprised with how many peoples on youtube claim to be artists, and don't have any skill to back it up. You are not one of them! Good job man.

  • ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT !!!

  • What great stroke control you have, such steady hands!

  • was this done in a day? did you leave the paint to dry at all?

  • @caityrm Painted over a period of days and did not let the paint dry.

  • What is the best way to create realistic skin using oil paint?

  • @YEKOMSSMOKEY The best way to create anything representational is to know your own palette so well that you can mix any value or color that you see in life. Recipes for mixing are only formulaic and tend to preclude careful observation of the visual environment. So, choose a small set of paints and explore every combination of them. Then paint whatever you see!

  • @seamusberkeley Alright thanks heaps. getting the right colour is definitely an art in itself :)

  • @YEKOMSSMOKEY Yes, as is getting the correct value — life long learning!

  • great work

  • good job

  • great painting

  • GREAT DEMO. SO PASSIONATE.

  • Beautiful

  • Amazing work. Thank you for sharing.

  • This is REALLY good!

  • i have never thought of starting a portrait painting like you do...love the lighting on the face...really brings the picture to life

  • Do you use blacks when you are rendering the shadows?

  • @6evil6dead6 Black is not on my palette and I rarely, if ever, use any black. Creating blacks from a variety of darks adds more life to the color and can more closely represents nuance of shadow.

  • Good JOB... a real portrait background come on as after or some spots come on before.... its totally a trick of an eye ... when the face is appealing and also real looking ! background would not matter come on as close to an outline,,, it will actually make the painting look 3D even more..

  • simply amazing !!!

  • Since when did u start ur journey with in art? I MUST SAY I NEVER SEEN SUCH creativity!

  • @MultiArtstudent Started drawing people at age seven.

  • @seamusberkeley Damn, your block-in technique is fascinating. I'll have try that instead of beginning with a fussy drawing. Is that guoache, oil or acrylic?

  • damn! now that's wat i call art starting out if nothing then bam!! its all apeares ur fabulos incredible talente and i can't even find more wordsto describe u ,words just ranaway when i saw this thanx for u and all artists for showing us that there are more important things in life than lady gaga lol XD

  • @rockakoka Something out of nothing — that is creativity for sure. BTW: Who is gaga?

  • I am in love.

  • @nourthing Being in love is a good space. Please stay there! : )

  • Brilliant

  • What I really love about this is how you started out with sort of a blob, you started out very simple, and then you keep going and going at and all of a sudden, BAM, a masterpiece.

  • @1DasOmen Yes, yes, yes. This is it! Seeing the whole before starting and actually beginning there, adding detail later, essentially letting the painting emerge. For me, this is what makes painting a life-enriching endeavor.

  • good stuff dude

  • great painting ! respect!

  • Great work!

    5 People clearly are haters!

  • @brassflower Everybody has an opinion!

  • this is great

  • Good work how long did the piece take!!

  • @b0xing123 A while, plus more than twenty years of painting. For a longer answer, take a look at the FAQ on my website: seamusberkeley . com/faq

  • it is so beuatiful, amazing! this is what i called talent!

  • Quite a skillful presentation. But I always come back to the same complaint with virtually all portraiture demonstrations and the work of virtually all "professional" painters so often hired by the companies that specialize in this area. And that is: does the artist have anything to say? This is a great dilemma, as "professional portrait painters" typically make major concessions to make money. Or perhaps, they really do have little to say, which I suspect is more the truth of it.

  • Love how you block in the shapes and colors and then refine

  • Awesome, I like still life but I am drawn to children's portraiture as well. The way her face seemed to pop out is amazing. I hope to be as good as you. Good show!

  • wow, dunno how you can paint with such a long brush:)

  • @bicnarok Helps keep the painting loose.

  • what colors are you using? oils?

  • @EarthSnakeZodiac Yes, always oil paint. You can read about my basic palette on my website FAQ section: seamusberkeley . com/faq

  • Good work bro, think i'll use this as a teaching aid to inspire my students...Show them how to build the painting up etc.....Cheers for the inspiration x

  • This is so beautiful.

  • haha your awsome

  • You are extremely talented portrait artist and are just amazing to watch. Totally enjoyable experience to watch you paint. Brilliant stuff. Is that handmade paper or a piece of canvas you paint on?

  • @gzairborne It is gessoed canvas.

  • will look and see if i can purchase if affordable

  • @chambagi Are you a student? After you take a look, be in touch directly at seamus at seamusberkeley . com - will appreciate your feedback.

  • wow wow,love it,do u sell how to dvds?

  • @chambagi I do have available one painting DVD, 'The Fundamentals of Painting' which covers the basics of painting. As portrait painting is just a specific form of painting, I always emphasize the underlying principles that are employed in all painting: drawing, values, edges, color and color temperature. You can learn more about the DVD on my website, just look under videos. seamusberkeley . com/DVD

  • ohhhhhhhhhhh fuck this is awesome!!

  • Just beautiful, thank you.

  • @klaus442 One of the reasons I paint is to share the work, so I'm happy you enjoyed the video.

  • wunderschön

  • hey im having trouble painting dark skin, do you have any tips?

  • @jackieMorales44 I've written answers to the most common questions on the FAQ page of my main website: seamusberkeley com/faq as well as posted other videos for you to watch.

The most important thing is to study the masters and paint from life as often as possible.

  • brilliant, beautiful !

  • WOW

  • You have a great sense of structure and shape.

  • what paints do you use and what ones would you recommed me to try this im 12 years old =3

  • @lolliepop8816 You will find the answers to your questions on the FAQ page of my main website: seamusberkeley com/faq

  • i lold

  • @bblslovesmusic You are welcome. I feel honored that you are so inspired by my painting videos. One of the reasons I paint is that I have felt so inspired by other painters from the past and want to carry on their tradition. And I want you to know that it is 'possible' to paint the way you dream - study, keep painting, keep improving.

  • WOW fantastic technique. You can't learn this. He was obviously born with this ability. Just beautiful, It looks like a photo taken by a professional photographer.

  • @millions2nette Actually, there is truth to both born ability and learning: innate talent is only potential without applied practice and study. You can learn a lot by studying other people's work, patience, positive attitude and practice.

  • @seamusberkeley

Your block in tchnique is most impressive.

Coould you tell me what surface and medium you're using in this video? I'm about to check your FAQ, so if the answer's not in there don't feel obliged to reply :-)

    Cheers.

  • AMAZING

  • u can paint ur ass off, man...i luv it!

  • great demo:)

  • wonderful!

  • Outstanding portrait work.

  • BEAUTIFUL . . . WWOOOOOOW, very impressive and great videos.

    Best,

    MAC

  • How long did this painting take? Really beautiful, by the way.

  • like my mmum bought me the crayola painter are those good for painting people

  • I like your mum and please tell her to keep supporting you with art supplies!

Here's the rule about materials: Always do the best you can without whatever you have at hand.

You are the artist working with the materials, they do not create the art!

  • @seamusberkeley thanks i will definatly keep this in mind

i try painting with he crayola painter

    ^ . ^

  • Wow this is fantastic! I would've done a couple of sketches before starting on a canvas You're magnificent! I've never done portraits or African people, dark skin tones are harder to render because you can find so many different tones.

  • Thanks for posting.....it was fun to watch......

  • You are welcome, glad you enjoyed watching - I enjoyed painting Breyon.

  • very nice, fluent approach.

I like how you correct the structure every now and then. excellent

  • whoa, i can;t paint like this! LOL.

    you have talent :D

  • WOW!

  • the woman is so beautiful

  • Fantastico, super brava

  • wow...fucking amazing...

  • Awesome...

I just admire how you have so much control over the brush holding it from the end.

  • I like the way you paint!

  • no fancy easel, plain canvas mounted w/duct tape on plain flat board....nothing but paint , brushes and awesome raw TALENT....great work dude.

  • I really like your comments: Kind of sums it up!

  • Excellent!!!

  • Well done Seamus great work

  • i've never painted a black person, i think that will be my next :) the reflection on the skin makes it seem so realistic, something that doesnt show much on light skin

  • Beautiful!

  • fabulous :D

    amazing, you are great

  • really cool, thanks! Are you using acrylic paint?

  • Oil

  • muito bom!

  • mother o god. wow that is a gift. i could onley wish i could i could paint like that.amazing bravo

  • good, very good!

  • very realistic, well done :)

  • Amazing portrait you did there.

I'm guessing you used oil 'wet-in-wet' on linen?

  • "mezmerized and beguiled".

  • like that you have the "stabilizer iron rod" to steady your hand when painting in detail :D i never thought of that (i use pinky finger outskirts and i usally messes it up :D

  • Great video, I love how you build up the layers of of paint to get the right color, if you have time can you please look at my video of my paintings and studio and tell me what you think, Thanks!!!

  • Excellent video!.

It is scary at @1:49-1:50 when she suddenly open her EYES!! Cool. I play that part twice!.

Did you go to art school? and how many years? or are you self taught? You are amazing!!

    More videos!!

  • wow

  • Hi Seamus,

Are your paintings done in one sitting, or do you let it dry at certain stages?

It's a thrill to watch you work!

  • I prefer to work in one sitting, or least while the paint is still wet. Nothing quite as much fun as working wet-into-wet.

  • you are really great, where is your website?

  • Google my name "Seamus Berkeley" or visit seamusberkeley . com

  • WOW! That is so good!!!

  • im a painter too this is exellent man!@!keep it going

  • my god, you do free-hand so amazingly. i hateyou! hahaah youre so good. :D

    im jealous

  • You can paint like that too - check out my website.

  • Sooo Nice. Just laying it down like a master. Would love to see this in real life.

  • simply biutiful

    what a strage stard

    but the final is biutiful

  • Creativity

  • Creativity

  • Is this oil?

  • nice hair, nice painting :)

  • When you work this way you have to be more careful where you place the paint! It is best not to put to much paint on to start with , much easier to add to a simple shape than take away from one! I sometimes start the same way as this guy.

He is very skilled you can tell that he is skilled by the minimal amount of strokes needed to form the image!

I don't have to convice anyone look at the finished painting!

    Supurb!

  • i dont have words to explain how good you r but i thing i want to say you r the best painter i ever seen fab painting u didnt even draw before start colouring u r great or should i say best

  • i love how it the colours blend together so well and the colours

  • Oil painting take time to dry so it's easier to make the colors blend like that.

And Seamus, good job! I mostly paint with acrylic but you made me want to paint with oil again :). And I wonder how you work with such a small canvas. I usually work with 2x2 (feet) or higher.

  • NICE!!!!

  • r u seamus berkeley? if so u r frikkin amazin

  • AMAZING !

    tnx for sharing!

  • wow

    amazing talent

  • Fabulous!

  • This is it !

This is a style I love to watch painting... I wish it could be in real time to see the magic arising !

    FANTASTIC MAN.

  • Truely amazing work, Do you use any mediums like liguin or additional oils?

  • The only medium I use is not a medium really: odorless thinner for the beginning wash. At one time I used Liquin and experimented with other mediums a little and found that they are not necessary.

  • I love luquin, simply for the very speedy drying time. I can varnish sooner with the glazing techniqe.

So love coming and watching you work!

  • Great technique.

  • wht paint is being used??

  • Oil paint.

  • It's a great painting.

  • Thanks, glad you like it.

  • I really enjoy your video painting.

    do you teach painting?

  • Yes. Visit my web site - seamusberkeley dot com - and look under the 'Events' section for more information about workshops.

  • You are amazing!

    04:54 Lmfao

  • Hello again. I'm glad you enjoy watching these videos because I have a lot of fun putting them together.

  • That was an excellent painting technique, although I use a totally different painting technique.

  • Hey might as well check out my new chalk pastel crazy drawing

  • so I am watching, watching,, intensively, those beautiful brushstokes... then the eyes pop out at you!! whoa.

nice work. I wish I wish I can do that!

    Are you using canvas?

  • Thanks for your comments. You can paint like this, it just takes some information and a lot of practice. Perhaps you are interested in a portrait workshop? Take a look at my web site seamusberkeley dot com and look at the events section.

  • so I am watching, watching,, intensively, those beautiful brushstokes... then the eyes pop out at you!! whoa.

  • so I am watching, watching,, intensively, those beautiful brushstokes... then the eyes pop out at you!! whoa.

nice work. I wish I wish I can do that!

  • so you sit there watching all those lovely brushstokes.. then the eyes pop out at you.. that is amazing.. i like that..

  • i love the wet on wet method. but every once in a while i have to use the glazing technique because if you have a red that is a light red, but not pink, then you can lay down white, then put red glaze on top, becuase if you did that with wet on wet, then you would just get pink.

  • Phat Stole my line! I was going to say the same thing! Amazing likeness! 5*'s!

  • Wow, I'm blown away...and inspired! Thanks so much for lettting us peek over your shoulder as you paint! You're truly gifted.

  • Excellent work...very cool !

  • This one was done over a couple of days. Oil paint, wet-in-wet.

  • If it's oils it's unlikely to have drying time, oils don't dry until up to a month after the painting (and sometimes longer). Even if there were breaks between days, which there probably were, the painting would still be wet-in-wet.

  • Great technique and picture.

  • Perfectly captured expressions, I love it.

  • AMAZING!!! Seamus, u r my hero!!!!

  • megafantastic.

    my favorite.

my 5 points you are fantastic.

  • Awesome. I love how the form just pops into place around 45 seconds when you add the first highlights.
