As a new artist I'm surprised with how many peoples on youtube claim to be artists, and don't have any skill to back it up. You are not one of them! Good job man.
@YEKOMSSMOKEY The best way to create anything representational is to know your own palette so well that you can mix any value or color that you see in life. Recipes for mixing are only formulaic and tend to preclude careful observation of the visual environment. So, choose a small set of paints and explore every combination of them. Then paint whatever you see!
@6evil6dead6 Black is not on my palette and I rarely, if ever, use any black. Creating blacks from a variety of darks adds more life to the color and can more closely represents nuance of shadow.
Good JOB... a real portrait background come on as after or some spots come on before.... its totally a trick of an eye ... when the face is appealing and also real looking ! background would not matter come on as close to an outline,,, it will actually make the painting look 3D even more..
@seamusberkeley Damn, your block-in technique is fascinating. I'll have try that instead of beginning with a fussy drawing. Is that guoache, oil or acrylic?
damn! now that's wat i call art starting out if nothing then bam!! its all apeares ur fabulos incredible talente and i can't even find more wordsto describe u ,words just ranaway when i saw this thanx for u and all artists for showing us that there are more important things in life than lady gaga lol XD
What I really love about this is how you started out with sort of a blob, you started out very simple, and then you keep going and going at and all of a sudden, BAM, a masterpiece.
@1DasOmen Yes, yes, yes. This is it! Seeing the whole before starting and actually beginning there, adding detail later, essentially letting the painting emerge. For me, this is what makes painting a life-enriching endeavor.
Quite a skillful presentation. But I always come back to the same complaint with virtually all portraiture demonstrations and the work of virtually all "professional" painters so often hired by the companies that specialize in this area. And that is: does the artist have anything to say? This is a great dilemma, as "professional portrait painters" typically make major concessions to make money. Or perhaps, they really do have little to say, which I suspect is more the truth of it.
Awesome, I like still life but I am drawn to children's portraiture as well. The way her face seemed to pop out is amazing. I hope to be as good as you. Good show!
Good work bro, think i'll use this as a teaching aid to inspire my students...Show them how to build the painting up etc.....Cheers for the inspiration x
You are extremely talented portrait artist and are just amazing to watch. Totally enjoyable experience to watch you paint. Brilliant stuff. Is that handmade paper or a piece of canvas you paint on?
@chambagi I do have available one painting DVD, 'The Fundamentals of Painting' which covers the basics of painting. As portrait painting is just a specific form of painting, I always emphasize the underlying principles that are employed in all painting: drawing, values, edges, color and color temperature. You can learn more about the DVD on my website, just look under videos. seamusberkeley . com/DVD
@jackieMorales44 I've written answers to the most common questions on the FAQ page of my main website: seamusberkeley com/faq as well as posted other videos for you to watch.
The most important thing is to study the masters and paint from life as often as possible.
@bblslovesmusic You are welcome. I feel honored that you are so inspired by my painting videos. One of the reasons I paint is that I have felt so inspired by other painters from the past and want to carry on their tradition. And I want you to know that it is 'possible' to paint the way you dream - study, keep painting, keep improving.
WOW fantastic technique. You can't learn this. He was obviously born with this ability. Just beautiful, It looks like a photo taken by a professional photographer.
@millions2nette Actually, there is truth to both born ability and learning: innate talent is only potential without applied practice and study. You can learn a lot by studying other people's work, patience, positive attitude and practice.
Coould you tell me what surface and medium you're using in this video? I'm about to check your FAQ, so if the answer's not in there don't feel obliged to reply :-)
Wow this is fantastic! I would've done a couple of sketches before starting on a canvas You're magnificent! I've never done portraits or African people, dark skin tones are harder to render because you can find so many different tones.
i've never painted a black person, i think that will be my next :) the reflection on the skin makes it seem so realistic, something that doesnt show much on light skin
like that you have the "stabilizer iron rod" to steady your hand when painting in detail :D i never thought of that (i use pinky finger outskirts and i usally messes it up :D
Great video, I love how you build up the layers of of paint to get the right color, if you have time can you please look at my video of my paintings and studio and tell me what you think, Thanks!!!
When you work this way you have to be more careful where you place the paint! It is best not to put to much paint on to start with , much easier to add to a simple shape than take away from one! I sometimes start the same way as this guy.
He is very skilled you can tell that he is skilled by the minimal amount of strokes needed to form the image!
I don't have to convice anyone look at the finished painting!
i dont have words to explain how good you r but i thing i want to say you r the best painter i ever seen fab painting u didnt even draw before start colouring u r great or should i say best
Oil painting take time to dry so it's easier to make the colors blend like that.
And Seamus, good job! I mostly paint with acrylic but you made me want to paint with oil again :). And I wonder how you work with such a small canvas. I usually work with 2x2 (feet) or higher.
The only medium I use is not a medium really: odorless thinner for the beginning wash. At one time I used Liquin and experimented with other mediums a little and found that they are not necessary.
Thanks for your comments. You can paint like this, it just takes some information and a lot of practice. Perhaps you are interested in a portrait workshop? Take a look at my web site seamusberkeley dot com and look at the events section.
i love the wet on wet method. but every once in a while i have to use the glazing technique because if you have a red that is a light red, but not pink, then you can lay down white, then put red glaze on top, becuase if you did that with wet on wet, then you would just get pink.
If it's oils it's unlikely to have drying time, oils don't dry until up to a month after the painting (and sometimes longer). Even if there were breaks between days, which there probably were, the painting would still be wet-in-wet.
Wow!
