and it is absolutely never about how much power you put out. it's more about how you can control that power. I own a very powerful 07 r1 but im going to buy a new crossplane as well to test the smoothness it has on the track. when it comes to racing, you need so much control and feel at the engine and tires. yamaha just gave it to you.
i own two r1s, an 05 and an 07. the 07 is tuned with akropovic exhaust and one tooth down sprocket in the front. I have yet to be touched by anything less than a liter bike. harleys red line at around 6 thousand rates per min. inline fours like the r6 go up to 17 thousand rpms. plus v twins cant make very much overall power. harley davidson big engine around 110 hp tuned. my tuned r1 around 170hp or more. and able to do 100mph in first gear. sorry vtwins see you at the finishline
@sewerrod, No their not. Watch the video again. The first engine is conventional, but then they show how they twist the crank and it fires in odd timing.
someone needs to watch this a few more times....it misses one of the power strokes intentionally. for instance you could fire all the pistons at the same time. but the backpressure to the intake would cause the engine to poof out and not run properly. firing order doesnt matter. it's all about primary and secondary forces. gotta get the idea of the explosion inside the engine causing the vibration, it's the rotation that causes vibration.
if the explosion was what caused the vibration it would be the same as going out to your car and trying to pick it up by pushing on the hood. the bang goes in all directions but the simple fact that the piston is just a smidge past top dead center it allows the explosive force to push the piston down rotating the crank, causing a vibration in two positions 1deg to 180 and 90 to 270deg.
@cameron197040 09 is a better engine, it has no tdc , bdc inertia so better throttle - engine connection / control and superior tyre wear. This is all for the track / racing though of course. In other words the 09 engine will produce better lap times and less drop in lap times from start of a race to the end.
@cameron197040 ye your not wrong that the new firing order is a loss in turms of bhp (strait line speed) thats because the crank shaft has to have a weight put on it (counter balance weight due to the piston position on the shaft) but on a race track it realy is the better engine hence the use of it in racing now... But for a strait line battle on the road then ye the older is a little better :)
@cameron197040 well thats just rider level tbh. In-line 4 engines faded out from gp racing due to the eason i stated, cross plain crank engines are just better for racing. even in world superbikes shows the same theory at work
one thing i dont get though.. this leads to nonlinear combustion cycles. Isnt the block more prone to cracking that way? and what about engine vibrations?
It's hardly revolutionary...it's exactly the same principle that Triumph used with the release of the 750 tripe Trident T150 in 1968!! The only difference being that this crankshaft has four pins. Not only does the design equalise inertial torque, it also largely eliminates vibration....nice of the Japanese to mention the heritage of "their idea"!!
Just like a Chevy or Ford V8. The only difference I can see is that all the balancing is done internally rather than with an inertial dampener. It probably sounds like a car.
its not a V4 wonna be, they didn't change the degrees to create a 90degree angle between the pistons, they only changed the result on the crank shaft. in simple, the weight balance in the engine is kept in tact giving less vibrations as opposed to the V design. Less vibrations along with better weight distribution in the in-line design means for a smoother and more controlled ride.
Trust me, Yam was still trying to make an "inline V4". Don't try to convince me otherwise. It's reality, you can make mute with all the specs. Put it up against the RSV4 and see what smooth, balanced and narrow. I don't have anything against Yam, but the truth is the truth. My guess is no other manufacturer will follow.
i disagree with the whole inline V4 idea and the RSV4 is not as smooth in my opinion (i may be wrong). I see that you're set on your opinions and im not trying to change them, just stating my own as well. i never said you have something against Yam. I myself mostly favour European engines, even though they are not as smooth by comparison. they are smooth, but not as smooth... again my future experiences may teach me otherwise but for now this is my conclusion. After all we live to learn :)
Firstly the last time i checked, "7h0p0r" there were 2 Yamaha's at the top of the Moto GP and Rossi doesn't ride both of them! Where the fuck would Ducati be without Stoner? As for Suzuki what a joke.
Secondly how is Ben Spies going in his first year in WSBK on his Yamaha? Don't get me wrong, I like Ducati's but like i said "No Stoner no Ducati...... PERIOD!!!!!
why cross shit and in line shit acceleration and all that shit if they can not beat ducati and suzuki, kawasaki, yamaha beats them all now beacause of rossi, but put rossi on a ducati...fuck's them all
7h0p0r, The crossplane crankshaft concept may be new on a road bike, but it's common practice on racebikes, so any superiority or inferiority between marques on the track is not because of the in line/crossplane concept, because as far as I know, they all use crossplane. In racing, you want as much power & revs as you can get out of the engine, & a crossplane crank helps to achieve that.
in Indonesia you can buy R1 for $35000, yes, in europe or USA you can get 3 R1!!!! This is because that Indonesia have a big tax, the tax is about 147,5% from the original price, so the Price in Indonesia is about 247,5% from the other contries, UHHHHH S**T, What a F******G TAX.......... I hope INdonesia join a WTO, ^_^.......
No. The crossplane has a rhythm that makes it sound like so. Yamaha makes a really aggresive bike and their entire focus if performance. Believe me, I love the sound of my 07 R1 at 14,500 rpms. It sounds scary when reved up that high, but the 09 has the crossplane and is proving to be better. Just ask Ben Spies!
Yup I can appreciate that. And pls do maintain your r1 well ,she s gonna have great demand in sometime cause guys like me d want to own her ,when we can afford one, just cause she sounds so much better ha ha....cheers!
Me....I do.....! CAn come to terms with the unparalled performance but the fact that my dream bike doesnt have the dream sound it once used to make is a lil hard for me to digest.
so the 2009 technology, same as 1909...

1971SuperLead 8 months ago
@1971SuperLead so then why is the piston going up and not firing
sewerrod 8 months ago
@sewerrod , Because it's a 4 stroke engine. On a 4 stroke engine the piston only fires every 2nd time the piston reaches the top of the cylinder.
1971SuperLead 8 months ago

@galaxything ok mate, but i have beaten 09's everytime i come across 1.
Go speak to a mechanic n he'll tell you the same, 09's are slower than 08's.
they've al told me the same thing, "Yamaha went backwards with the 09".
or have less power. forget wot magazines n books tell you.

I've seen 08's vs 09's on the track here at Eastern Creek International Race Track, on ride days.
