@cambaman33 Ummm.... no, it's not exactly a pay-per-jump thrill ride. Try reading the description. I think that if you have to ask those questions then perhaps stick to a bungee jump at a theme park! ;-)
He was swinging from a strong point on the rock. I'd be more concerned about jumping the four ft (ish) gap that you need jump over to get to Hanging Rock than the swing itself. It's a beautiful place. If you wan't to go out to the point, don't rely on the last shrub for balance. the shrub is barely hanging on itself.
I remember being told that the routes in that area were under graded.
Hey people, does anyone know whereabouts or better still waht that massive arete on the right of the jump is. I've seen it in the bluies guide and it defiantely needs to be climbed.
thanks mate, we actually nearly went there for a jump with some other climbers last year. Unfortunately it rained, but now i can see why the guys wanted to go there so much. Does anyone know if theres a climb on that arete?
Awesome. I will absolutely do this one day. I just need to meet the right people and go to the right place at the right time (I'll figure out the secret handshakes one day...)
Scares the cr#p out of me, but that's what life is all about.
nice one. I did this same swing in about 1997. The scariest thing i've ever done.
We used two ropes in parallel just in case, it's hard to know how much force you are really putting on the ropes. I found another vid on you tube of people doing the same swing: search for "first and second swings off finger"
I'll look up that vid, thanks. In my favourites there is another jump video at the same location by some other guys. They used a very different system.
I had two ropes as well, but set one to be 10 metres longer. The reasoning was that 2 equal tension ropes would put twice the deceleration force on me, which might hurt!
did you guys just go and do this? or is it like a class or can you go somewhere and sign up to do it? cuz it looks like SO MUCH FUN. dangerous..but fun (:
Awesome stuff!! was it all on natural anchors how many? I did a similar swing a while back... abseiled off the end of a rope... check out the video on my channel
I did the same swing on Hanging Rock. Awesome! You weren't with us were you with big Mal? There were 5 of us.I went second. Our rig was twin ropes and we used helmets. The sound of the air rushing through the holes was more scary than the jump. We also pre-tensioned the ropes so that as we jumped it pulled us away and did not swing back into the cliff. I went right up in the air higher than the tie off point and hung for a moment before falling again. AAAAgh! So much fun! Good one!
You need a lot (years) of outdoor rock climbing experience in setting up complex anchors, and a good understanding of the limits of gear. Anything less is a death wish.
I absolutely loved the change in pitch of your scream - reminds me of my second (not first - can't really remember it!) skydive. I bet a second go at it would have been really freaky!!
pretty funny.... was this before or after the pub ?
helmet would have been a good idea but it appears there was not a surplus of common sense on location. 4 stars though , cause i was entertained and obviously you were too ! did you get the stains out of yer undershorts ?
Cool. Blackheath or Katoomba? Can't remember the other towns. Ever see anyone do this? I think it gets done not infrequently, suprised here aren't more videos of it.
i did something simular to this in new zeland.it was called the canyon swing.done it in queenstown.and as you say it was definitely the scariest thing i did in my life.as soon as you jump yuo think fuk im dead.
i did the nevis bungy the day after which is the second highest bungy in the world but i think the canyon swing was the worst.
I can only think that the moment you jumped you must have wondered if you would hit the rocks...and the same with each swing...then the wind blowing you off course...magnificent because you survived but hellish risky! Thanks for the video. Others do not copy!
You've got balls i'll give ya that :D

the general area is called hanging rock and is just north of blackheath looking into the grose valley.

redhotDG 3 years ago
There are a number of climbs on that arete and face - grades ranging from 19 (the traverse out) to grade 26 I think.
I did a 23 on that face a few years back.

Cheers Ted. Don't know if it is the camera angle or what but I pretty much swung straight and true, the wind didn't affect anything much.
Scariest thing I ever did, but nonetheless a very thought out and calculated risk.
