  • Are any of Donner's 3 formulas you list faster than the comp you lit in the vid???

  • KClO4/Al = 65,82% / 34,18% (OB=0%)

Perfect ratio, oxygen balance is zero, fastest mixture

  • @NeoBojownik Thanks, I'll try that ratio when I can but in the mean time I’ll write it down. It's going to be a while before I get back into pyro. Right now I have other priorities.

  • @NeoBojownik Hey does that oxygen balance ever depend on the particle size? Ive found that 9:1 KMnO4 : 1 micron aluminium is much stronger than 7:3. sure, there is oxidiser left over, but the increased reaction speed causes much more damage.

  • what's the difference of al mg and mg/al and what's the best?

  • @alansk896 In this case there is no difference. 66% MgAl will do instead of measuring out 33% Mg and 33% Al.

However if the metal ratio's were different say for ex. 15% Mg and 51% Al, then there would be a difference.

  • very fast!

    Good job!

  • @kuro96inlaila Thank you. =)

  • @HazzWold1993 Thanks HazzWold but I have the same book as you. In fact the first flash powder test is from the book.

    Isn't the book awesome? 8^)

  • The real M-80 formula is KClO4, Al, S and antimony trisulfide.

    But the first is faster.

  • @Khalastas Yeah, that's what's listed on PyroGuide for M-80 comp.

  • @ExothermicVideos Nice video!

  • @theitalian556 Thank you sir.

  • @Khalastas Do you know why the sulphur is included? To my knowledge it doesnt increase the power of the flash only the sensitivity of it. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong btw.

  • @theitalian556

Sulfur, and I may be wrong, but it is generally used to reduce ignition temperature and therefore technically sensitize it.

  • @Khalastas Sulfur, yes pardon my spelling mistake. However, adding sulfur in MOST flash mixes makes the flash more unstable, especially with KCL03! Feel free to look it up if you wish.

  • Hello

as a chemist in my opinion is better the first formula because it is faster and leaves no residue on the surface, compared with the forward two, less smoke and fewer ingredients are needed for preparation but more dangerous by the potassium chlorate.

    Greetings.

  • @Marco070280 Well actually both flash powders left residue. The first test left slightly less residue then the second.

  • Damn indeed! Some powerful stuff there :)

I would recommend to use incense sticks taped to a stick or at least something wich keeps your hand further away. I've once lighted strobe comp that wasn't milled enough and it wouldn't light with the burning paper it was on so I decided to use my lighter. BAD idea! It took a while to light but when it did.. WOOSH! Result: burns on my hand which stained like hell because of the Ba(NO3)2 present in the comp. Never get Barium on your hands! Thx for posting

  • @PyroCreationZ Thank you very much.

Sorry to hear about the burn.

Incent sticks tapped to something else longer sounds like a good idea but do incense burn hot enough to ignite all flash powders out their?

  • @ExothermicVideos

    Thx.

    You should just try ;)

I've lighted several comps with them and never failed. Meal, Tiger Tail, 70/30 flash all ignited as soon as I touched it so it should work for everything.

  • @PyroCreationZ Well, some comps are stubborn like 60% KNO3/40% Al.

  • @ExothermicVideos

Hmm true, some will be more difficult bt hey it's worth the try :)

  • Add %5 sulfur and it will surly do well

  • @freedomismoneyusa Sulfur is a reagent so what would be the point of adding S to two flash powder ratios that already burn very rapidly when easily ignited with a lighter?

  • good ratios, since there wasn't anything leftover.

  • @HazMatLabz Yup, and they're old ratios too.

  • Cool! Thanx for posting!

  • @agpjh Sure and thank you for commenting.

  • Second would be better louder i think.

  • @oOTechnobaseOo I believe so. It appeared to be the fastest.

  • holy shit that was sweet did that hurt your hand when it blow up

  • @baker0158 I burned my forearm when I lit the last FP. The pile was about 1 or 1.5g. My arm smelled like burnt hair for the rest of the night.

  • very nice mate:D

  • @PyrotechnicsNL Thank you.

  • Some of the best yet. Nice amount of smoke! You must try and use a KClO4 (66%), Al (32%), and S (1%)

  • @AfricanPyro Thanks and why sulfur?

  • yes good & fast FP!! i received very soon some kcl04, bariumnitrate, AL dark 6micron & mgal 400mesh,i think i made several test with your formula;)

  • @MrJBTEK Sweet, I'm looking forward to buying some barium nitrate.

  • Very nice FP man!!!

  • @Mnemotron2010 Thank you. ;^)

  • Veri nice FP man!!!

  • It might interest you that according to J. Donner's "Professional's Guide to Pyrotechnics" there are three official formulas for the original mix of M-80 powder.

    1) KClO4 (64%), Al (22.5%), S (10%), Sb2S3 (3.5%)

    2) KClO4 (66%), Al (17%), Sb2S3 (17%)

    3) KClO4 (66%), Al (17%), S (8.5%), Sb2S3 (8.5%)

The author of the book refers to Joseph H. McClain, Pyrotechnics (Philadelphia: Franklin Institute Press, 1980) 122 for this information.

  • @MrSatanica Yes, that does interest me very much thank you.

KClO4 (64%), Al (22.5%), S (10%), Sb2S3 (3.5%) is the formula that I was talking about at the end of the video. As for the other two, I didn’t know about them. Someday I’ll try all three of them.

  • It is hard to say really, which is faster. I guess you would have to experience it in person to be able to tell the difference.

I only use regular "standard" 70/30 flash powder. Mostly because I can get those chemicals cheap and easy, and they are so effective that there really is no need to aquire something faster. As little as 1 gram of my 70/30 confined in a tube is loud enough for me to have to leave town in order to shoot it. Don't need more power than that. :)

  • @MrSatanica HaHaHa I know what you mean. I lit a 16g 70/30 flash powder explosive in my neighborhood and almost got arrested.

  • It seems like a very good formula, ofcourse when more like 70/30 it will bang more confined, but seem less powerful unconfined, i use 70/30 but i will try this one for sure, i also use 60/40 NaNO3/Mg (coated) 400mesh, that doesnt flash atall when in a m-80 tube, just one big boom and no light;)

  • @skyisthelimitinc Really?

I've never heard of such a thing. Your salute had a bang but no flash...

  • @ExothermicVideos There was a very non blinding orange blink, my cam couldnt capture the m80 blink atall, but the vid i sendt you do appear abit orange due to the ratio beeing altered abit

  • That was very fast FP's and nice smoke outcome :P

    Thumbs up!

  • @pyr0ph1L Thanks man.
