Great performance by the girl. This song is terrible though, "Taps" is a very special song to many people and should not be butchered in this fashion.

There is a You Tube named, "Taps The Bugler's Cry-The Origin of Sounding Taps", that is a very good historic account of where "Taps" comes from. Seems Il Silenzio may have come from Taps...
This is"Il Silenzio"an extended version of an ancient Italian military theme, played every evening, in short form, in Italian barracks as signal to turn off the lights in the dormitory . @NAVMAR16 The American TAPS is much older than the Italian IL SILENZIO! It was infact taken from a tune played during the American Civil War during the 1860's!
The piece is "Il Silenzio", a form of "Taps", but it is NOT the "Taps" of the American military. It sounds like taps because of the limited range available to a bugler. Ok..I have seen this posted as TAPS a few times here on You Tube.A brief history lesson for ya.TAPS was first adapted by Union General Daniel Butterfield for the 3rd bgde 1st dvn 5th U.S. Army corps. Army of the Potomac. It was written by brigade bugler Oliver Willcox Norton during the Peninsular campaign of 1862. TAPS was then quickly adapted by other union and confederate units. TAPS was made an official U.S. Military bugle call after the war. Il siliencio was written by Nino Rosso in 1965

@dghdave This is Melissa Venema, a world renown trumpet player. She plays for audiences in many countries. She is considered one of the best for her age and even older more experienced players consider her better. And yet you want to tell her how to hold the instrument? Embouchure is personal to the artist and may be based on mouth shape or teeth shape or any number of things. I am sure that she is quite able to figure out what is best for herself.
@dghdave ....she may not be able to center the horn on her lips.....I have partial bells palsy and can only blow out of one side of my mouth.....maybe, just maybe this is the only way she can make such beautiful music. I don't think it matters what side of her mouth the horn is on......her music is a blessing to all who hear it.
No it is " Il Silenzio" I played it as a Solo in the solo and ensemble competition in 1970 in ElPaso and received a 1st Division it IS a nice recognized version of Taps while it was written as such this young lady did this very well
I don't want to quarrel with anybody over this piece, or any other piece.
The history of music is chock full of songs made famous by artist #2 or #3 who played them, while the original arrangement went largely unnoticed.
Madonna and some of her hits are a prime example.
While I do acknowledge that TAPS as the US know it is a US military theme, US posters are kindly asked to acknowledge there is a Continent "Europe" where the military have been playing bugles & brass for the last 2500 years.
Quite possibly the worst version of taps I've ever heard - even as a band member and former trumpet player . Taps is a reverent, solemn piece which is designed to be performed with dignity and honor - not a piece that you can add "literary license" to. While she a talented musician - she needs to leave taps to the professionals
@Splynncrithe: you tell me "Please provide proof of the origins of Il Silenzio, i.e. Nini Rosso and Co's own words when asked. Otherwise it is just opinion."
You insist on Nini Rosso. He simply commercialized what was already a well known piece among the Italian military for decades.
You want proof? Are my own 31 years in the military, my father's 42 years, and another 3 generations before him, sufficient proof?
If you served in a European Army you would know every Nation has their own TAPS.
Bradleyerad, I think you're sadly mistaken. I find it hard that a military call which has been played since 1862 which originated from another bugle call written in 1835, actually came from some song written in 1965... Mayhaps you should bone up on your musical history before deciding to make a blatant statement as you did. Although you are correct that General Butterfield did have his bugler play it, the song it originated from was called "Scott Tattoo" not Il Silenzio...
Voices that we thought had fled well be replaced by the voices of the young who will arise and their shout will be heard world wide Yes we can !, Yes we will!.Take care ADonovan43
The song is beautiful, the girl plays wonderfully (although her arms look skeletal thin. As for the taps bit. Not one piece of this song is taps although it sounds similar to it. Actually find and listen to Taps before trying to state that this has anything to do with it. Do not disrespect Taps as it is a time honored song played for the men and women in uniform for rest. Not only nightly rest, but to honor those being laid to rest.
I think this little girl is a perfect demonstration of a princess. She is beautiful, humble throughout the applause, and clearly touches the hearts of listeners.
Folks, IL silenzio, is where taps came from, Taps was born from a few bars of it, Gen. Buterfield found it and decided that the slower part would make a good "Sleep well men for the area is safe." Kind of tune.
This beautifully played! What a talented young woman! I love that TAPS is a beautiful beginning to a beautiful song! Thank you for sharing it with us!
This is totally awesome!!!!!!!!! What a talented young lady. My dad served in the Marines during Korea,I missed Vietnam by a whisker [USMC]and my son was a Special Forces medic [ 3rdBn5th SFG] with two tours in Iraq. I am not ashamed to admit that I wept openly after enjoying this superb performance.A well deserved salute to all the guys [and gals]who gave up their tomorrows for our todays...Semper Fidelis !!
Taps and Il Silenzio are not the same. Some people even confuse Taps with the Last Post. They are three different (although similar) pieces of music. Anyway, girl, your rendition is incredible, fantastic, keep playing, I love it
I can't really say why,but I don't think she's playing it herself. Maybe because of her mouthpiece position or because it's Andre Rieu she's performing with...only playback in my opinion, but a very beautiful one.^^
Il Silenzio is an extension of Taps. From wikipedia:
Taps is a variation of an earlier bugle, the Scott Tattoo, used in the U.S. from 1835 until 1860, and was arranged in its present form in 1862 by the Union Army Brigadier General Daniel Butterfield, an American Civil War general.
Il Silenzio is an Italian pop music instrumental piece written in 1965 by trumpet player Nini Rosso and Guglielmo Brezza, its thematic melody being an extension of Taps.
I am very confused by this, and I see that others are. I am led to think that what we call, TAPS, must come from a larger piece of music, and must have been modified.
She does not repeat the first two bars, so that in the third repeat, the note ends high! She ends it low, and then it veers off completely. It is extremely lovely, though, and she is extraordinarily talented--all that air in those thin lungs!
that young man was his son, his son died while his father, heither of them knew it was each other, and his father found the piece of paper in his dead sons pocket. after being denied a full military honors burial he was granted one musician, that musician was the trumpet. That is how TAPS came to be born
first and foremost, this isnt taps, im on the honor guard, i would damn well know taps. secondly, taps never was more than a minute or so long, bcuz the young man who created taps died in the civil war. that young man was a confederate soldier who was majoring in music in a southern college, his father was a yankee colonel and god forbid, he discovered a young man moaning in pain in the dead of night during a firefight, crawled out to help him, drug him bak to his camp just to find out it was
I'm a retired Army MSG/E-8 and do not mind if the call it TAPS though it is properly named in the ( ). I would like to get it on a CD or flash drive so it can be shown at my Funeral when I die. I would be honored to know my kind of TAPS was to be played. No mater how she plays it comes out sounding wonderful. "OLD SARG"
This one hit home... The Department of Defense announced today the deaths of two airmen who were supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. They died April 9 near Kandahar, Afghanistan, in a crash of a CV-22 Osprey. They were assigned to the 8th Special Operations Squadron, Hurlburt Field, Fla.
Killed were:
Maj. Randell D. Voas, 43, of Lakeville, Minn.
Senior Master Sgt. James B. Lackey, 45, of Green Clove Springs, Fla.
I have watched this over and over again, she is truly magnificent, she had to have worked really hard to be able to perform such perfection. I rise and applaud you little lady. Excellent!
i had to play the normal like 4 second version at m school on remembrance day and it seemed like a bi tof a challenge but she makes me realize how much i suck hahaha
@biljopal There is a connection when they have similar sounds. Maybe not exact, but if so many people recognize the tune as taps, then there must be a connection. I think both songs are beautiful. I enjoy listening to both.
Whereas you are both correct frmo a US Military point of view, you are also wrong from a musical point of view.
"Il Silenzio" is the Italian Military's equivalent to Taps, and is inspired from it.
What Nini Rosso &C. composed is a variant, known as "Il Silenzio Fuori Ordinanza" which is NEVER played at funerals, but is highly popular when a Company of enlisted celebrates the end of their military service.
Nini Rosso and Gugliemo Brezza may have found inspiration in the chilling piece which is known as TAPS. I have found proof that Il Silenzio is used in Italian Military functions, but it is not the Italians version of TAPS as it is not used the same. Taps is to the US as Last Post is to the Common Wealth. Please provide proof of the origins of Il Silenzio, i.e. Nini Rosso and Co's own words when asked. Otherwise it is just opinion.
@biljopal the only connection i can hear is that rozzo and brezza stretched Taps... Same thing if you were to stretch a 30 minute episode to a two hour movie
@MendotaTech If you go to the "USA Military March Taps on Trumpet" on the right side of this page, you'll hear the U.S. Taps. Although there are similarities, what she's playing isn't a stretch of Taps.

It is beautifully played, but it sounds like a composite of both "Taps" and the British "Last Post".

Il siliencio was written by Nino Rosso in 1965

this is not Taps, nice sound but shes needs to center the horn properly on her lips

@fryque how old is melissa, cause this is a beautiful piece
budster122 4 months ago
@dghdave ....she may not be able to center the horn on her lips.....I have partial bells palsy and can only blow out of one side of my mouth.....maybe, just maybe this is the only way she can make such beautiful music. I don't think it matters what side of her mouth the horn is on......her music is a blessing to all who hear it.

No it is " Il Silenzio" I played it as a Solo in the solo and ensemble competition in 1970 in ElPaso and received a 1st Division it IS a nice recognized version of Taps while it was written as such this young lady did this very well

WHEN I HEAR THIS TAPS I WANT TO CRY....
SuperLuigy8 1 year ago

If you served in a European Army you would know every Nation has their own TAPS.
lambdavi 1 year ago
Bradleyerad, I think you're sadly mistaken. I find it hard that a military call which has been played since 1862 which originated from another bugle call written in 1835, actually came from some song written in 1965... Mayhaps you should bone up on your musical history before deciding to make a blatant statement as you did. Although you are correct that General Butterfield did have his bugler play it, the song it originated from was called "Scott Tattoo" not Il Silenzio...

Folks, IL silenzio, is where taps came from, Taps was born from a few bars of it, Gen. Buterfield found it and decided that the slower part would make a good "Sleep well men for the area is safe." Kind of tune.

Taps ? This is "Il Silenzio" (the silence) composed by Nini Rosso inspired by "Silenzio fuori ordinanza" an Italian military theme.

That is how TAPS came to be born
knivesjuggalo3143 1 year ago
first and foremost, this isnt taps, im on the honor guard, i would damn well know taps. secondly, taps never was more than a minute or so long, bcuz the young man who created taps died in the civil war. that young man was a confederate soldier who was majoring in music in a southern college, his father was a yankee colonel and god forbid, he discovered a young man moaning in pain in the dead of night during a firefight, crawled out to help him, drug him bak to his camp just to find out it was
knivesjuggalo3143 1 year ago
I'm a retired Army MSG/E-8 and do not mind if the call it TAPS though it is properly named in the ( ). I would like to get it on a CD or flash drive so it can be shown at my Funeral when I die. I would be honored to know my kind of TAPS was to be played. No mater how she plays it comes out sounding wonderful. "OLD SARG"

While she plays beautifully, she isn't playing Taps. She's playing Il Silenzio, composed in 1965 by Nini Rosso and Guglielmo Brezza.
Taps was composed in 1862 by Gen. Butterfield during the American Civil War.
There is absolutely no connection between the two pieces.
biljopal 2 years ago 26
Absolutly correct.
PeerGynt1111 2 years ago
@biljopal There is a connection when they have similar sounds. Maybe not exact, but if so many people recognize the tune as taps, then there must be a connection. I think both songs are beautiful. I enjoy listening to both.
rittenhouserobz 1 year ago
@biljopal & splinncrithe
Who am I to know? An Italian, to start with.
lambdavi 1 year ago
@lambdavi
Splynncrithe 1 year ago
@lambdavi While you may be right, every version of "Il Silenzio" that I've heard sounds exactly like ""Il Silenzio Fuori Ordinanza".
May I call your attention to MasterMessy here on YouTube: "Silenzio fuori ordinanza - Fanfara
Il silenzio, in lutto.
Dedicato a tutti i caduti italiani, militari e non, civili compresi.
Tutti figli di un'unica bandiera La stessa che li piange con onore ed orgoglio.
In loro memoria, un saluto. Per non dimenticare."
Lots of military images in the video.
