Yep. I just found one of these in my yard and it's little trick did, indeed, cost it its life! I was like "WTF?! We don't have cobras in Arkansas!". I couldn't take a chance on leaving it alive to bite my wife or my dog if it was poisonous. Now I feel kinda bad, but it is what it is.
My son and I came across a snake in East Texas that mimicked a Cobra while we were on some trails on 900 + acres of woods, but it was a beautiful orangish color with brownish and black random spots and markings plus a black marking on both sides of its head. Wasn't aggressive at all and went on its way after mimicking a Cobra. Was very cool to see.
Very cool video, but I have just one thing to interject. Hognose snakes do not intentionally mimic cobras; there are no cobras in North America where Hognose snakes live. Hognose snakes actually do a better job mimicing rattlesnakes. They don't act like them but they have the same short, fat body and color.
@jgalvin21...no offense to you or your knowledge of the species... only 1 of the hognose snakes i have been around play dead. i was bitten by 4 hognose snakes in the last few months and the bites were like a venomous snakes bites just not as horrible. usually i have noticed they flatten their heads, hiss then take a bite. my friend has a pet hognose who is plainly aggressive. well he used to be i have handled him to the point that he wont bite. im not sure about him biting anyone else though.
@bjjc51192 oh and it is "you're" as in you are not "your" as in a possessive pronoun...if you wish to insult me at least keep it at a fourth grade level you idiot.
@bjjc51192 Lets look at your logic here, if i was a bitch, would i touch a snake that can bite, we already know you have not passed 4th grade so i dont expect your logic to be great, so i forgive you...but you should still delete your history so your mother(notice i used your properly) doesnt know that you have been so rude to people you dont know. maybe she will actually hit you for once. good day
Hognose snakes are not venomous. I am a biology teacher, and we're studying reptiles right now. Hognose snakes have rear fangs and toxic saliva, but it's toxic only to prey. They do not bite humans--the only way to get bitten by a hognose snake is to smell like their prey.
@jgalvin21 Go to the issuu website and search hognose. I have documentation of my reaction to a bite. Not severe, but folks keep asking. Anyway, I still love my hognoses!!! I'm trying to convince them to breed. Maybe if I play a little Barry White! haha (If only they weren't deaf). ;)
the only time your hand swells up is when you have an allergic reaction, otherwise their generally harmless except when they sink their fangs into your skin, just wear leather gloves you'll be ok.
well kind of but, they have the enlarged rear fangs in the back for killing obviously but you dont have to be allergic to feal the symptoms, hognose rarely actually bite anyways but whn they do if they embed them deep into your skin i gurantee youll swell up and it will not be pleasant, they kill mice that way
Not completely harmless. You shouldn't state that. They do have poison but are generally harmless to healthy adults. You could get someone in trouble. They are rear fanged and have venom but its very weak. Ive only seen one in the wild and its a great site the show they display.
have you eevr seen a vicious poodle? its freaking scary a pitbull is expected to look scary a poodle is unexpected and even scarier, that was a bad analogy

best way to tell them apart is let it bite you and see what happens

Thank you so much for this video! Hopefully it will help a hognose not be killed by some idiot that thinks its a cobra. 5*s!!!

When I was a kid me and a friend found one and gave the poor thing quite a workout before letting it go, they're REALLY good at looking mean!
They're cute in an odd sort of way and are kind of like watching a poodle trying to act like a pitbull.
