This brings back so many good memories, Elite was one of the best games I played, the first buy was always the docking computer, docking was a bitch. You had to keep your nose clean or landing became almost impossible with the police chasing you down. Ratsoncats was right the cargo you caught with the fuel scoops was 9 times out of 10 always dang slaves, Me and a friend both got to Elite and we sent off to Bluebird for our Elite Badges have mine still knocking around here somewhere. Good days..
brings back so many memories. Made Elite twice, the Tape version, then the disk version...with missions... but a TUBE...oh man, there would be someone with money. Only a dream for a schoolboy like me... funny thing with watching this clip, so many memories, as soon as you headed to collect the cargo...I knew it would be slaves. Always a great way screw a clean rating!
Thanks for uploading vid it is good to see this classic played once more. I have been playing this on the BBC emulator BeebEm 4.14 for Windows. I can't get it to work on the BBC Master 128 with the 65C02 co-processor, I get the error: "Disc fault 18 at: 0 00/00". So I have to set the emulator up for BBC Model B Plus with the 65C02 co-processor instead and run the 'Executive Version' instead of the 'Master 128 Colour version'. I can't figure out how to get around this. Thanks again for uploading.
This is pure nostalgy :-) ... But in my mind, the sound and graphics was SO much better then... Things really has evolved. But still, this is the first and best real simulator tht gave me the feeling of really being present in a game.
This is a game that presented 8 galaxies of 256 planets - multiple wireframe spaceships and different stock markets on different planets, as well as different government types (anarchy, facist etc..) all on 16k of memory.
I consider it, according to its resources, the greatest computer game of all time. A feat of programming brilliance that has never been matched since.
The BBC micro was itself the forerunner of the architecture (ARM) used to power the software in today's mobiles.
I think you've got quite a way to go. In order to reach Deadly, you have to destroy 2,816 ships/asteroids/missiles etc. to get to Elite you need 6,912 kills... another 4,096!
@IncisalEdges I think that means he achieved a certain number of kills - 128 or 256 or something along those lines. The first one bumps you up to Mostly Harmless but you need loads to be Elite.
Back in the mid 80's when I was 16-17 years old I would play this game day and night. I would have more credits than possible to spend to enjoyed going outside the space station shooting up endless supply of cops.
Where can I get this BBC version for the PC? What is the best BBC emulator?
I know other versions came out but this was the best for game play.
I just read on msn that this was voted the best game of all time!! I played it as a kid too and yes it was good but best game of all time? Not sure about that!!
Elite did come out on the PC in glorious CGA and EGA graphics. VGA came later with Frontier:Elite II. I got quite hooked on Freelancer, the graphics are very nice, even now.
I think the PC did get a conversion called Elite Plus but it would be so old by now that you would still need an emulator like DOSbox to run it. But there is an open source remake called OOlite which is pretty good if you want to play it on a modern machine.
hi sorry if this sounds sad but i'm interested in the game and the classics but have never played it. would any one knoe where to get a suitable emulator and ROM plz.
I remember another game in that same period which looks a lot like this one, but in which you could actually land on planets and walk around a bit. Can anyone remember the name of that game? I played it on an Atari ST.
No, this is the 6502 2nd Processor BBC version aka "Executive Edition", you need an 80T drive and a "cheese wedge" additional processor attached. The BBC version has monochrome space view and four colour status/radar. X3 is pretty close to Elite - I haven't played it for a while, Freelancer is pretty old, but a respectable space trader/shooter.
Ah. I didn't know that. Yes, I agree - showing the current reward, rather than your total funds, was better. Afterall, you could view your account ANY time.
And the Jumpdrive wasn't called Taurus on the Beeb, eh? Didn't know that either.
As you rightly suspect, I played it on a Spectrum. Actually a Spectrum +. No rubber keys for me. Lol.
Heh..Yep Torus was the name of the team that did the Spectrum and Amstrad conversions, and olny called that in those 2 releases. And like you an old Speccy owner. Good days :D
Oh yeah I love my speccy emulator. Skooldaze is great! My favorite way to play Elite these days is the c64 version with the emulation speed turned up 30%.Makes it much more playable. That or the BBC version above :)
Skooldaze was brilliant. I was surprised that they got Elite onto the Spectrum. A lot of people said it couldn't handle it but it was pretty good, despite the Lenslok. :)

yeah 7000 ships to get elite on the BBC version (the hardest version I believe) sounds familiar.
How come you've got front military lazers but a rating of harmless? Just lots of trading and avoiding combat?

All time classic. I never reached Elite...only Deadly. I think you have to shoot over 1,000 ships to get to Elite!

@cpmisalive I got the message "RIGHT ON COMMANDER" after a kill on my cousin's saved game back in the 80s. Does that mean he had reached Elite?

I still play Elite on a BBC B with second processor.

There are still many flight/space games that could do with copying the Elite scanner, so intuitive.

Yeah, the bbc probably didnt have the processing power to care too much as long as you hit the general area okay.

cpmisalive 3 years ago
Haha well i wouldn't know... 1770DFS & 40/80 track drive pretty much emptied my piggybank back in the day.
I'd discovered dance music & girls by the time I had 2nd processor kinda money scraped together :o)
ShoeiBoy 3 years ago
Yeah, I know what you mean ;)
The 6502 SP was £225, I think, back in 1984, considering a BBC B was £399 with DFS, it was pretty steep.
Now there's a halfway decent PC emu, its worth playing the SP version knowing it won't cost you anything, but time...

You can play a multiplayer verison of this online called jumpgate. Worth a look

Wow, so many fond memories of this game.
This is the Acorn version isn't it? Wasn't the BBC version monochrome (I can't remember)?
Currently playing X3:Reunion...the closest thing there is to Elite that I've found.
t30sxh 4 years ago
Yeah, X3 rules.
But I do remember Elite with much joy. What a great game in its day. I had the Spectrum version. No colours! Lol.
BTW - 5202 creds for killing an Adder? On the Speccy you got just 10!! Even a Cobra MKIII only gave you 17.5!
Ah, the memories.
Thraxwhirl 4 years ago
No the BBC version brings up your credit TOTAL for each kill, not the credit reward itself.
And annoying it is too. Much better when they changed it it later versions.
