@DeloreanPictures it's all about filtering and use of light - basically once you test the limits of the camera, you can achieve quite nice results. I mix it with RED on some commercials and you barely can notice.

@YababaVideo Filtering. Only. Canon is a great camera until you grade. So you have to do all on camera, all on set. I use a specific multi-coated lens and Formatt 4x4 ND filters, which are not exactly "Neutral". They give this tint. I also have a secret weapon, but it's secret.

@YababaVideo of course no... the compression makes the image look really bad after you push any slider a notch too far. In a funny way t's a bit better in App Pro Res, although you record H264, as you know, but still - not much you can do. I'm currently testing the Technicolor Cinestyle - yet I don't see it as a great change.

@YababaVideo blocky color pixels are nothing compared to large surfaces with soft light grading on them. Canon doesn't make light gradation smooth, so when only you push it a bit, you get strange coloured, solarized and noisy light transitions on those surfaces. Do a test: shoot a flat wall with light gradation from left to right or so at a difference of 1-2 stops from brighter to darker area. Then push blacks a bit down, mids of highs a bit up. Render. You see what's going on.

@YababaVideo I'm currently testing Cinestyle from Technicolor and I'm hugely disappointed. So far it pushes me to a conlcusion, that the technique from above excrpt - shooting standard preset with low contrast and filtering is much better on the outcome than any grading. Technicolor did not change the situation as far as I have found my solutions.

@YababaVideo I think you need to try various ones and see what suits you best. Colors, mists, diffusors etc. It also depends on a look for given project you wan to achieve.
