@quentinreynoso 14 and you swear like it were nothing? geez when i was little everyone i know was too scared to even say "cheese and rice" cuz parents would do everything to make us not wanna swear "i don't want to live on this planet anymore"
Boelcke. I am 59, and I think you have succinctly expressed the sentiments of many of those who lived through this period. There is no doubt that that period in our History was tantamount to Civil Warm of some degree, as the National Guard and other Law Enforcement entities battled American citizens from Los Angeles to Newark, and the Capital of the Nation, Washington. D.C. So much changed in such a short time, that various segments of Society became alienated and polarized. Very tough.
Met Dusr=tin in his fave city ,Toronto,Canada..and he will convey how very much he still listens to this heart warming song...he said to us that he still sheds a tear on a 'bad day'....love you Mr. Hoffman.
@repelghosts I'm somewhat embarrassed to ask, but what is this movie? I've never seen, although hrd much of it and know the name somewhere in my brain but can't recall. Love the song which was just reawakened by the movie "Loser". But can't remember the original. Thinkin the graduate but know that can't be it.
Garfunkel was the best singer ever, and Simon did the best guitar harmony with this song... THESE two people were the masters. This song goes perfectly with the human voice, and you can also, if you want, listen to it on irish whistle just by clicking my name, it will auto-play ;)
I finally get the joke (The Legend of Robin Hood play.) ! In my play, their are 2 sellers and one yells "Parsley sage rosemary and thyme! Say, you going to the scarborough fair?" LOL
i did watch this 20 million times never it get boring for us. incredible i think that michael jackson had never has formal music training and also amazing that his playing ability had won him fans from all every the world when he is on ketamine playing percussion parts on the torso of his guitar all the free time a solo performer he never plays a to set list and uses a minimum of effects and history world tour He casually he completes recordings in one take. not in a rush free for time
Your comment doesn't even make sense! Want to try to express ur opinion again? Either u think Hoffman was right for the role and made the film better or not...
The movie was a masterwork of comedy, largely - but this moody S & G song is perfectly accompanied by this excellent edit of the troubling parts of the whole Benjamin experience.
Ever hear of the concept of sharing one's thoughts and ideas in order to provoke a discussion about a given topic? Maybe when you figure out that astounding concept, you'll come up with something better to post...
So you don't know why people leave comments. But if you're going to ask such a stupid question, maybe here's another stupid question you won't know the answer to: why do people have conversations?
I am 48 and although I was alive in the 1960s, I was really too young to appreciate them. I remember my mom and dad going to see it and my mother walked out of the theater. She didn't leave before telling the manager that she felt it was a disgrace that porn be shown at the town movie theatre. Clearly she was on the other side of the Second Civil War. I can remember seeing hippies sleeping on the Boston Common or hanging out in Harvard Square. Begging for money, offering flowers, & body odor.
You know, they originally cast Robert Redford for the role of Ben. Thank God, fate stepped in. What a completely different (and terrible) film that would have been. I adore Redford, but Hoffman was PERFECT for this role.
yes, I heard this. What I also later learned was that in actuality. Dustin Hoffman was only a few years younger than Ann Bancroft. He was 30 years old, and Ann was in her early to mid-thirties. I'm sure of her exact age of the time of this movie. But, I found this revelation so interesting because of the whole premise of the movie of a much older woman fooling around with young man just out of Graduate school. I believe his character was about 21 years, where as she was mid forties.
@ChrissieE5 Well 'terrible' might be overstating it. Of course Hoffman did great, but I'm sure Mike Nichols would have still made this a great film regardless of who he had to work with.
@ChrissieE5 Robert Redford was too good looking at the time and Hoffman throughout this film was awesome at being kinda the akward yet witty college graduate, and in my opinion with Redford the effect that the film was going for wouldn't of been as clear or have as much of an impact on society.
Love the movie, and love the SG songs used in it. I dont really remember what scene it was used in during the movie but just to see the two together is cool.
Excellent work, sir. Thanks for extending across all those great clips. I remember the song as being in the UC Berkeley scenes as Dustin brooded waiting for Elaine to emerge from classes. That scene was so burned in my mind that I heard the song in my head when I finally visited the campus.
So moody, so good.
Without the music, The Graduate would have been a different, lesser film.
I'd never heard this song before now, and when I heard the end of the first set of lyrics to the verse, it threw me way off. "Remember me to one who lives there. She once was a true love of mine" is also in Dylan's "Girl from the North County", but then I did my research and found out Dylan took from this song. Haha.
Recently, I was eating in a barbeque (BBQ) restaurant in San Antonio, Texas when I saw a red 1966-67 Alfa Romeo Duetto Spyder ("boat tail") just like from "The Graduate" driving down the street. As I watched it disappear from view, I could hear the gorgeous Katherine Ross yell "BENNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!" A cool car that is several times more valuable now because of the movie. But then, so is a silver Aston-Martin DB5.
whats great about both the song and movie is that they both tell how life isnt easy and the song tells how complicated love could be just like how the movie represented.
I am 58 and this movie helped define my childhood and I will always love it for that. This is a great movie of the times we lived in ... often called our "Second Civil War." Please do not misunderstand. I moved on long ago and am not a counter culture guy. But, those were troubling and different times. I hope no future generation has to face that again.
@Boelcke1916 we face it now my friend ,more than ever before ,due to the high level of sophistication, technology and the psychological operations advancements. We are rapidly losing the one common link to all humanity,FREEDOM. For without this we cannot endeavor to become anything of import. We are losing our bithright which is total self expression and the right to experience every level of consciousness that exists. To say we do not face similar times is folly.Namaste.
@Boelcke1916 We certainly could use those experience voices of discontent and resistance,I long to see those raised fists of defiance and the masses clamouring to be free. Where have they gone? Say that they are not content to silently await old age and death. Sitting quitely without the firey resolve once held in high regard. Come back! Bring your leadership to the meandering sheep, for they are truly lost my friend.Namaste....
@Boelcke1916 i think now matter how old you are, this film will affect you. i first saw it when i was 18, i'm 20 now. and although i was not alive during that time, i could relate so much to dustin hoffman's character. pressure from my parents, some what sexually frusterated (LOL), a feeling of lonliness. at that time, i was floating around in the nothingness that was my life. i think because so many people can or have related to his character, is why the movie still has so much cloute.
@chetdog Its so controversial because it's so anti-establishment and obviously a good example of this is when Elaine at the end of the movie, we assume shes legally married yet she still runs away with ben. Throughout the movie as well the pool is used as a "drowing" effect, when that ben is confused, disoriented, and trapped by society.
I am 58 and this movie helped define my childhood and I will always love it for that. This is a great movie of the times we lived in ... often called our "Second Civil War."
I had a Mrs. Robinson once, Agnes Robinson, in fact. Lol, I was 19, she was 91. I've been thinking lately about calling her up for some booty, but it's been 25 years. She might not remember me.
An old English folk song dating back centuries. Scarborough fair ran for forty five days each year from 1253 until 1788 in the lovely county of Yorkshire England.
@igotkiwi I thought the direction was brilliant, it really conveyed the claustrophobia and lack of comfort that Benjamin felt. It is a brilliant film.

@Boelcke1916
so they said this movie was controversial when it came out. but it seems that young kids are doing their mums best friends these days.

@mickyp1960 Why did they quit doing Scarborough fair then? It must've been pretty popular if it lasted 500 years

@igotkiwi I thought the direction was brilliant, it really conveyed the claustrophobia and lack of comfort that Benjamin felt. It is a brilliant film.
