@gypsy469 if you look at bench numbers they pretty much topped out at 700 with Anthony and Ted and guys like that. Once the new shirts came in with the polymers that is when you saw guys like Ryan going 800. Then makers multiplyed the poly shirts and that is when 900 and 1000 entered the picture. RAW bench numbers still stop around 700 so that tells you progress is not with the human body but the shirt. Having said that, it takes a strong man to hold 700, 800, 900, 1000 regardless.
@gypsy469 the bench boards allow you to put greater weight on the bar so you can work a heavier lock out, since you don't have to go all the way down. Additionally, the boards are used with guys as they go heavier to lock in their shirts. When John was in his prime, bench shirts were not what they are now as the equipment has become, in some cases, multi-ply. Using boards can be like rack lockouts, but you can come down with the weight and have the bar still touch the boards for the feel.

@Russellt0228 actually, Tater Tot has pretty good pulling form. his head stays up and his chest stay up as he pulls the weight.
