Sounds so familiar. We had 2 of these wonderful tractors that we farmed with for many years. A 1931 and a 1948. They were awsome work horses!!! They even smelled good burning the Standard Power Fuel, turn the water on so they would not spark-knock when pulling hard. Thanks for your posting.
This really brings back memories. I drove one when I was a kid. Were you pulling a 3-14" or a 3-16" plow? We had one D that would pull the 3-14" and the other D had a little more power that would pull the 3-16" plow. We also used the D to pull a 16' springtooth.
Love the sound of the first reduction gear! The old 35 has been around the field a few times! I'd like to see some "on board" video pulling the 3 bottom plow.
Why are you plowing previously plowed ground?

A John Deere D is stronger than a G but not stronger than an R right?

It goes Low L-H-M-B-A-G-D-R to high
The only tractor stronger the an the R is it's replacement the Model 80
