this is taken in the late 70s i guess , the f-15 in this vid is an A model with the old aces ejection seat and had the turkey feathers attached to the engine nozzles, the 36 tfw received C models in the early 80s. nice vid however

The F-14D Tomcat is the best it could kill enemy aircraft farther out than the Eagle , and track more planes. And it also wins with a bigger missile. Plus it's a stronger plane. The Eagle makes pretty landings on long runways , a Tomcat makes a carrier landing 24 hours a day in all weather conditions. It's also a larger aircraft. It's footprint is the same as a B-17 flying fortress . I can go on and on. Even though it's gone it still eats at the Air Force that the Navy had a better plane.
@kevsps The F14 was a bigger waste of money than the F22... it was a shitty aircraft PERIOD. Just cuz it could do carrier ops isn't anything special. Any fighter could be re-designed (tweaked) to be able to do carrier ops.
it may perform a mission but man is it a piece of crap. honest to god those things can't go two flights without a hard break. every part on it, built by the lowest builder
man i miss Bitburg AB was with the 525 squadron and 36 EMS (87-91), one thing i dont miss was the eagle bites when loading missles and munitions lol...
@allinaday Best fighter for over 30 years and "UHOHYESYEAH" thinks he knows better? LOL !
I also love the F-22 Raptor....but as of this date, NO COMBAT history !
I am confident of the F-22 abilities against all current fighters, but even the F-22 will be hard pressed to meet the legendary history of the F-15 EAGLE !
I still think it was a mistake to not continue developement of the F-15 with vectored thrust engines.
@rampking1 Absolutely beautiful plane! The F-22 is beautiful to see, too, but you're right in that it hasn't proven itself in combat, yet. The F-15 is the standing champion of the skies in terms of fighter service record, and as an F-16 guy, I envy your experience with it.

@UHOHYESYEAH the f-15 has never lost in a dog fight. despite aging quite a bit its still one of the top fighters in the world. thats why its still in service
@UHOHYESYEAH f22 suxs. it may be faster and everything but anything can be faster if u spend twice as much to make it. this plane was made around 30 years ago and it still competes with a plane that was made less than ten. no to mention which plane do they still make? the f15 ya thats right.
@fbrown172 The Raptor hasen't seen combat yet. If you are implying that the F-15 is better than the F-22 you are wrong. Sure, the F-15 is sexier, but the F-22 has so many advantages it's rediculous.
@TTDMFfreaknew I was implying nothing. I merely pointed out that the F-15 has an unbeaten combat record. The F-22 is new, hi tech and sleek looking and all that crap, but the F-15 has something over the F-22 that you cannot deny. And that my friend is a combat record. The F-22 is so insanely expensive that they may never be deployed into a combat zone! One could also argue which was better, the F6F Hellcat or the P-51 Mustang. One had a 10-1 record and the other had a 19-1 record.
@fbrown172 Of coures F-22 would be deployed if it was needed, I bet they are itching to send it out into combat. They use B-2's all the time even in Libya which costs several times more than an F-22.
And while it doesn't have combat record it has combat exercises records and they if real would blow F-15 record out of the water.
@OlderG0ds the reason the f 22 is there is because its comunication system is so high teck that they cant talk to any other country and also they are based in alaska and japan so its a long way
@kirbyroxy Not sure what you're talking about to be honest. Also F-22 are not just based in Alaska they are all over the U.S, Florida California Hawaii N.Mexico Nevada Virginia.
@allinaday: I saw that "R" during the filming and everybody thought it was funny, including the military.
JM: That's interesting that the AF didn't make you remove the R because my aircraft was 1038, and we named it, "The .38 Special". They made us change the name. I protested saying that the .38 special is the weapon of choice of police chiefs across America....they said, "Change it!"
@sbavstratman67 Thank you for contacting me. I am still in the business and you can see that by looking at my YouTube channel. The Wing can be processed on my website, thehoffmancollection. Those were interesting times, those old days.
@theblodylvelies, the A-10 is an attacker aircraft, not a fighter. Meaning it doesn't focus on enemy planes which are used against other aircraft, it focuses on close airsupport and attacking & destroying enemy's postitions. It's weapon stations can't all carry air to air missiles, majority of the stations just carry bombs and air to surface missiles. And it's speed and moveablity, not to mention it's weapon systems aren't as good as the F-15.
The names painted on jets aren't always flown by those same pilots, he's a relative newbie based on his rank (First Lieutenant) as opposed to Capt Stoner who is a much more seasoned pilot than a 1Lt.
I'd be interested to know what the distance to speeds are. That is, how far/fast is he going at the end of the runway? Gotta be going 350 knots before pulling up. Faster?
LOL that's right you heard what the plane captain said "in the service 18 years and gets goose bumps and feels like a kid when he sees a F-15 take off" how could u not love fighters, you'd have to be a real clown ! @OTULP62 this vid is obviously old ,it looks old ,has old music but good point about the nozzle i saw it too strange indeed
Damm old video!!! Check out the OD green fatigues, the perm press style of the mid 1980's on the crew chief!!! I was at Scott AFB. Ill, and when a new F-15 from St Louis would fly over and touch and go. That WAS a nice jet!!
I miss working this A/C-TITE shop tech 80-85....spent some time in Bitburg and somehow actually knew this was made there before seeing the tail or hangars. I feel just like this guy...feel like a kid every time I see one fly.
@StringBolt Turkey feathers (or tail feathers) are the little panels surrounding the engine exhaust nozzle, that open and close with the variable exhaust nozzle. I heard that on the F-15 they had trouble with them falling off during flight and removed them. Made the tail pipe .....un-elegant. Other aircraft kept their tail feathers and look more streamlined. "Life support"?....that's pressurization and LOX systems?....or parachutes?
JM: The variable fairing panels around the engine exhausts are called turkey feathers. Not long after this video was made, the Air Force removed them...because they kept falling off. To this day I don't think F-15s have turkey feathers unlike all other fighters. F-15s also don't have leading edge slats.....and that is amazing for ANY aircraft, not just fighters.
This is great. It brings back memories. I was stationed there from 77-79. East Germany would always test our response. Zulu Alert would always scramble to intercept them and they would run away. Cat and Mouse games were played frequently. They would come out and we had to chase them back. For those who have never had their freedom taken away. You have the gall to put this pilot down because of his ears. He would gladly lay his life so you can have yours. I was a crew chief, just like SSgt. Dew.
@HighestCyborg jokes aside , they carry if its a long sortie possible bottle water crackers ,some candy, also its a piddle pack , urinate into it via a hose system.
Thank You for putting atleast this video up, for free. Lols. I just love the way eagle used to be back in those days when it performed the air superiority role unmatched with any aircraft of that era. Great video, 5 Stars...
@Mjas5150 That's what I would have guess. Late 70's - Early 80's. My old man worked on F-15, and he wore the familiar camo pattern as far back as I can remember.
@Mjas5150 I think it's earlier than the '80s. From what I remember the F-15 shed it's turkey feathers early on....almost immediately. They kept falling off if I remember that right. That would be before 1981 when I was in.
whats a sorte mission? or however you spell it

@StringBolt - Actually, you are wrong. I saw that "R" during the filming and everybody thought it was funny, including the military.

David, I served at Bitburg from 86' - 89'. Great assignment. I am now a Director/Producer in South Florida. Are you still in the business?
Do you know where a copy of the "The Wing" can be purchased?
Thanks
sbavstratman67 1 year ago
@sbavstratman67 Thank you for contacting me. I am still in the business and you can see that by looking at my YouTube channel. The Wing can be processed on my website, thehoffmancollection. Those were interesting times, those old days.

I think the A-10 is better,... the 30 mm GAU8 is more accurate and it's got more wpns stations on the jet for bombs or whatever you fancy to fly.
theblodylvelies 1 year ago
@theblodylvelies, the A-10 is an attacker aircraft, not a fighter. Meaning it doesn't focus on enemy planes which are used against other aircraft, it focuses on close airsupport and attacking & destroying enemy's postitions. It's weapon stations can't all carry air to air missiles, majority of the stations just carry bombs and air to surface missiles. And it's speed and moveablity, not to mention it's weapon systems aren't as good as the F-15.

All the guys are in their O.D. greens. They phased those out when I was in the AF in 1987. Old film, but brings back a lot of memories. Thx.
jonesy97 1 year ago
The names painted on jets aren't always flown by those same pilots, he's a relative newbie based on his rank (First Lieutenant) as opposed to Capt Stoner who is a much more seasoned pilot than a 1Lt.
eldoret11 1 year ago
I'd be interested to know what the distance to speeds are. That is, how far/fast is he going at the end of the runway? Gotta be going 350 knots before pulling up. Faster?

@JetMechMA with what? what are 'turkey feathers'? gotta talk slowly, I'm an old Life Support guy...
StringBolt 1 year ago
@StringBolt Turkey feathers (or tail feathers) are the little panels surrounding the engine exhaust nozzle, that open and close with the variable exhaust nozzle. I heard that on the F-15 they had trouble with them falling off during flight and removed them. Made the tail pipe .....un-elegant. Other aircraft kept their tail feathers and look more streamlined. "Life support"?....that's pressurization and LOX systems?....or parachutes?
JetMechMA 1 year ago
@JetMechMA turkey feathers?what are "turkey feathers"
Acecombatgamer 1 year ago
@Acecombatgamer: turkey feathers?what are "turkey feathers"
JM: The variable fairing panels around the engine exhausts are called turkey feathers. Not long after this video was made, the Air Force removed them...because they kept falling off. To this day I don't think F-15s have turkey feathers unlike all other fighters. F-15s also don't have leading edge slats.....and that is amazing for ANY aircraft, not just fighters.
JetMechMA 1 year ago

@sdhubbard : It had to be mid 1980's or before. Olive drab uniforms started to phase out in the USAF around that time.
Mjas5150 1 year ago
@Mjas5150 That's what I would have guess. Late 70's - Early 80's. My old man worked on F-15, and he wore the familiar camo pattern as far back as I can remember.
sdhubbard 1 year ago
@Mjas5150 I think it's earlier than the '80s. From what I remember the F-15 shed it's turkey feathers early on....almost immediately. They kept falling off if I remember that right. That would be before 1981 when I was in.
