I watched this last night, I was very sad at the end : ( Fucking red necks I want to make a bit of cash, fly to America and just ride a bike where I feel like....I love libertarianism and that concept would suit the US so much, its a huge country and there is no reason why people can't do what they feel like, let the city people look after the economy, Washington etc, I won't give a shit cuz I'll be on my bike in the middle of nowhere.
I just read about a sequel to this amazing film... My generation is full of people that are really good at fucking up music, movies, books and everything else
Oneof my all time fav movies.Watched it again for the first time in years last week (must have seen it at least 20 times). The hillbillys in the cafe who give them shitALWAYSimpress me, just how real they seem. They don't seem to be acting, they seem they real deal. But the scene where Hopper says 'we did it man', & fonda says 'nah man, we blew it'ALWAYS gets me. I know Jack got killed, but what he mean by that?Always kinda brings me down that scene (cause its like your on the journey with them)
@IArteaga45 isn't that a great song? looks like someone else answered ur question, but that's probably my fav song in the entire movie, and that says alot cause every song in this movie was outstanding, and this is one of the best soundtracks of all time
Just finished watching it for the first time. The ending totally took me by surprise, but I completely get the symbolism it presents: That people adhering to the lazy status quo of life and being good little sheeple will never ever be cool with people who simply do their own thing. Especially dumb fucking rednecks. But really, it can apply to just aout any culture in life. Fantastic film.
I remember the long, long line-ups at the show when this movie first came out, over 40 years ago. It was a must-see, and every kid (incl. myself) HAD to see it.
Free people are a danger to well trained killers at the School of the Amercas, just killers came out of that joint, shame to what freedom was suppossed to be about!
This movie, along with "Network" (1976) are such eye-opening, well-writeen films. I watch this movie over and over and am always blown away by how relevant it still is. I can only imagine how amazing it musy have been to be a "hippy", and walk out of the theater after seeing this. R.I.P Dennis, you changed my life and millions of others
If you watch it now, it has a lot of technical flaws: dialogue that doesn't make sense (the UFO scene, anyone), Dennis Hopper's overuse of the word "man," etc. However when this movie first came out it was like, "Holy crap, here's a movie about the times produced by two genuine hippies, not some corporate studio heads!"
I don't know why I HATE this movie. 3 amazing actors, hippies, folk music, seems like i'd totally love it, but I seriously just can't get over how lame it is. Especially the ending. HOW ANTICLIMACTIC THAT ENDING IS! Rednecks shoot them, now their dead, end of story. It's just a bunch of drug addicts, tripping out, feeling like they can't find a home because they're so fucking high, and a bunch of hicks just being hicks.
@grayfox622 But that's the whole point of it; there isn't supposed to be a structured plot or purpose because the characters choose not to live by one. It's not intentionally nihilistic, it's just realistic. These people live, they die. The end. No tragedy, no moral to their story. You would observe the life of an animal the same way, but when it comes to human beings, people always have to complicate the meaning of life. This film just shows what it's like when people don't do that.
@nytmstr what the fuck are laughing you idiot i live in switzerland europe and i'm 16 and i know this movie so do my friends wtf! we wouldn't know this movie if it would be not a legend
i was watching this by myself because its on the top 100 american movies of all time..and my brother and father just happen to come in for the ending (including that LSD trip) and thought i was a freak for watching it. it was a good movie, but the end, especially the "bad trip" disturbed me. nevertheless, i understand its message and i dont regret watching it.
GOD BLESS DENIS HOPPER . LOOKING FORWARDS TO MEETING UP WITH YOU IN THE BIG UPSTAIRS . MAKE SHURE YOU HAVE AN HARLEY WAITING FOR ME. IF YOU HAVE TO NICK GODS HE HAS PLENTY . LOL!!!
See this movie gets better with age. When it was made it was just another statement to "fight the man, man" but now it really shows what America was and what it became. Roll on, Easy Rider
I saw Easy Rider when it first came in 1969. My older brother who was 6 ft. 6, my younger brother who was 6 ft. 2 and me, (5 ft. 2) all climbed into the trunk of the car and my older brothers pregnant wife drove us all into the drive-in- theatre. She drove the car to the back of the theatre and we all climbed out to watch one of the most boring movies of the year.
Seriously though, if you think this movie is shit, then you must be either blind, deaf and stupid, or you have never sat down and really 'watched' it at all. This movie was really out there in it's time and it captured the mood of youth during this period. It also had a lot to say about America and it's own internal prejeduces. Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda and Jack Nicholson will be forever remembered for this movie. And the bikes in it spawned a whole generation of chopper builders. Brilliant!
@redfxr You have to be old to like this piece of crap! its way to ugly to even watch ew. garbage deff not even close to being top drug movie thats fuking crazy!
One of the biggest movies of American History, and honestly it is one of the worst. Pretty much sums up the American Movie industry and the future of America.
of course there is freedom. you are free to come and go as you please, live any way you choose, dress as you like. you could get on a bike and ride into the dessert and live off the land and sleep under the stars, but i doubt you could and thats where your freedom went. you have forgotten or neglected to learn simple rules of nature to survive. you wish for freedom but ask where the price tag is. freedom my friend is found when you put down your wallet and go FREE.
America is really released of that legion of dumbasses who hated the hippies in its time? Is FREEDOM a reality in America today? These not only a nostalgic movie..But hippies, today and unfortunely...are pieces of museums...And they will never came back
@benfirst do you dislike hippies because YOU dislike hippies, or do you dislike hippies because society says you should? IF so, what about them? Protest is one of the rights we as Americans should take for granted. I like that they protested. I do not, however, like the methods they used. For example, taking over schools so that hard working men, who weren't given everything on a silver platter, couldn't get an education. So, i guess my point is explain why you feel the way you do.
@PrisonersofWarEnt He's an American legend too :P. RIP indeed, it's a traversty that they took so long to give him the hollywood star. The only reason why they eventually did was because they knew he was dying and wouldn't be around much longer.. It's a real shame :(
Free people are a threat to the status quo (slavery to our corporate masters). If you're free, you don't give a s#!t about what the Joneses are doing and therefore not spending every paycheck (even the ones you haven't received yet) keeping up with them. And you look so happy being free others may become interested in throwing off the shackles and then how will the corporations continue to rake in obscene profits? If you're happy and you look free, beware the Man!
I just blogged about this film on blogspot and I want the embed code so I can display it there. You mind if I get it from you? moviereviewsandreflections.blogspot.com/
I visited Dennis Hopper's grave on a road trip, how ironic, he is truly free now in a grave in taos and beyond without life's critics and men saying how america should be...
I run for two hours on my treadmill three times a week with this movie in the DVD player. I can't imagine how many times I have seen it and it is awesome everytime.
@Frontboarder101 You missed the point man. You're right...it was not a good movie in the sense of today's "Action Packed !!! " and overdone special effects type films. This movie was a simple...yet poignant...story of an era which was VERY different than the one you currently live in. Open your Eyes and LEARN !!!
@nebnis81 Imo everyone should look back to the 80s, 70s, 60s and learn what everything is all about...Who gives a damn about the after 90s culture? Internet? Sure, great tool, but nothing more than a tool. Programming? 3D effects and CG ? Yeah...now days people are used to live in a fake perfect world and miss everything...
@nebnis81 where did i say anything about special effects? I am a big fan of movies and i think that for instance the sergio leone and kubrick movies from the 60s are some of the best ever made, but i did not enjoy easy rider at all and peter fonda is a terrible actor.
Yeah, rest in peace... but I thought then and I think now that this movie was a real stinkeroo. How is that commune coming along these days? Yeah, right...
The man who Direct the classic movie Easy Rider is gone. Dennis Hopper will be remembered as one of the best Actor-Directors that ever lived. He also did other classics such as Speed, Apocalypse Now, Blue Velvet, Super Mario Brothers, & his oscar-nominated role in Hoosiers, & he did tv as well including his last role in Crash: the tv series. Good-bye Mr Hopper and we'll miss you so. Dennis Hopper 1936-2010 : ( ....
This was Dennis Hopper's best role, almost a semi auto-biography film with best friends Peter Fonda and Jack Nicholson. It's sad that all 3 of them died in the film because they could've film a worthy sequel. RIP Dennis Hopper 1936-2010 (74)
Was this the first stoner movie?

@grayfox622 But that's the whole point of it; there isn't supposed to be a structured plot or purpose because the characters choose not to live by one. It's not intentionally nihilistic, it's just realistic. These people live, they die. The end. No tragedy, no moral to their story. I run for two hours on my treadmill three times a week with this movie in the DVD player. I can't imagine how many times I have seen it and it is awesome everytime.

I love dennis hoper and jack nicholson in this movie but Peter Fonda is a really bad actor and this movie is not good.

How old are you because it sounds like you do not understand any thing.

@preston9219 And how old might you be ? It sounds like you did not understand anything from what I posted.
ntipouan 1 year ago
@ntipouan old enough to know that every generation thinks the one ahead of it has no merit or cultural value because they dont understand it.

@preston9219 True.

@nebnis81 where did i say anything about special effects? I am a big fan of movies and i think that for instance the sergio leone and kubrick movies from the 60s are some of the best ever made, but i did not enjoy easy rider at all and peter fonda is a terrible actor.
