Water expands when it freezes. Very, very few other liquids do this. That's what it looks like when ice breaks a rock over the course of a long time. I believe that was one of your guesses... sorry but this was really pointless..

Holy shit- that thing probably weighs damn near 20 tons if its 10 ft by 15 ft or whatever you said. Thats crazy. It would take a whole lot more than a lightning bolt to split that bad ass. I hike and climb mountains for a hobby and I have seen boulders split and cracked just like that, but not quite as large, due to water pooling up and freezing and expanding just like you said- but damn that boulder is huge...its tough to say.

Erosion doesn't make sharp-edged cuts like that. The edges would be much more rounded. It looks like repeated freezing prying a crack apart to me.

A lot of schools in Idaho have boulders outside to paint school colors and what not on. One of the high schools I went had a rock about that size maybe a bit bigger. One night it was struck by lightning and was shattered. It didn't just split. But I would rule out lightning any thing can happen. Although a meandering Chuck Norris could have been to blame.

What may have happened is that water seeped into a crack, froze (expansion), and made the crack larger. Rinse and repeat over a long period of time, until it split completely.

Alternatively, this could have been done by hand. I noticed scraping at the top of the split downward, which suggests that someone may have hammered picks into the top and used the weight to split it.

Given the smoothness of the rock my first guess would of been it was planned for some type of art for a building or a park, but the plan was abandoned. But upon seeing the closer view it looks like the water swept out the dirt from under it, and over years of growing and shrinking from the changing seasons, combined with the strain of one side missing support 'cause the water, it looks like it simply cracked from the strain. And the crevice and edges are smooth, showing it happened a while ago.

If it where lightning you would see evidence you would see a rock Fulgurite a large tube formed in the rock where it was split. What probably happen is at one time the ground washed out from underneath of the stone leaving one part of it suspended most likely during a large flood, and due to the weight of the stone it probably cracked along a natural Fracture or (Weak spot) in the rock and busted or natural process of freeze and thaw make it crack along a weak spot in the rock.

When it wasn't a "boulder", when it was still part of a larger rock formation, it got fractured by tectonic stress. that crack filled with vein material that cemented the two pieces together. When the rock formation finally eroded, this boulder which probably broke along other veins around what you're looking at, ended up where you see it now. The material in the vein subsequently eroded away leaving empty space. Gravity caused one side to partially fall away resulting in the change in gap.

Lightning CAN break a rock in half as long as it has a path of least resistance through it (such as an eroded path down the middle) but i think this one was done just simply by time and seasons changing.
