I don't know how many times you got this question answered, but you made a video, so you're going to keep getting answers. :-)
Water expands when it freezes. Very, very few other liquids do this. That's what it looks like when ice breaks a rock over the course of a long time. I believe that was one of your guesses... sorry but this was really pointless..
does the lake freeze in the winter? if it does its the pressure of the ice and the expansion and despansion of the change in temperatures. Gotta See My Page!!!
Holy shit- that thing probably weighs damn near 20 tons if its 10 ft by 15 ft or whatever you said. Thats crazy. It would take a whole lot more than a lightning bolt to split that bad ass. I hike and climb mountains for a hobby and I have seen boulders split and cracked just like that, but not quite as large, due to water pooling up and freezing and expanding just like you said- but damn that boulder is huge...its tough to say.
Probably cracks on the inside growing over the years (there are more cracks to be seen). Looks like it failed under its own weight. I dont see why lightning would want to hit a rock and i certainly dont see why that would crack it.
A lot of schools in Idaho have boulders outside to paint school colors and what not on. One of the high schools I went had a rock about that size maybe a bit bigger. One night it was struck by lightning and was shattered. It didn't just split. But I would rule out lightning any thing can happen. Although a meandering Chuck Norris could have been to blame.
damn dude, you sure are breathing heavy from climbing up there. maybe i cracked when your fatass used to play on it as a kid? jk i couldnt resist from the heavy breathin
What may have happened is that water seeped into a crack, froze (expansion), and made the crack larger. Rinse and repeat over a long period of time, until it split completely.
Alternatively, this could have been done by hand. I noticed scraping at the top of the split downward, which suggests that someone may have hammered picks into the top and used the weight to split it.
@ThaTrottein it's not smashed it's split and yes water can do that, there are many examples of what a freeze and thaw cycle over the years can do to an object.
Over time water seeps down into the cracks and during winter the water in those cracks will expand and over time that crack will get bigger and bigger until one part is dislodge from the other.
this was ultimately caused by three factors ice stress gravitywhen water fills crack and the temeratur freezes the water freezing expands and is hard enought to spread the crack this in turn over periods of hundres of years and mixed with erosion from rain and drought will ultimately make this happen.if you view the lower portion of the rock you notice a V" formationof the boulder crack it self this is your cause for the crack the usa has undergone several iceages in the last 10000, time enough!
Given the smoothness of the rock my first guess would of been it was planned for some type of art for a building or a park, but the plan was abandoned. But upon seeing the closer view it looks like the water swept out the dirt from under it, and over years of growing and shrinking from the changing seasons, combined with the strain of one side missing support 'cause the water, it looks like it simply cracked from the strain. And the crevice and edges are smooth, showing it happened a while ago.
cracks form in the rocks, water gets in cracks.. water freezes + expands in the cracks, causing them to get bigger + eventually split the rock. pretty much..
If it where lightning you would see evidence you would see a rock Fulgurite a large tube formed in the rock where it was split. What probably happen is at one time the ground washed out from underneath of the stone leaving one part of it suspended most likely during a large flood, and due to the weight of the stone it probably cracked along a natural Fracture or (Weak spot) in the rock and busted or natural process of freeze and thaw make it crack along a weak spot in the rock.
When it wasn't a "boulder", when it was still part of a larger rock formation, it got fractured by tectonic stress. that crack filled with vein material that cemented the two pieces together. When the rock formation finally eroded, this boulder which probably broke along other veins around what you're looking at, ended up where you see it now. The material in the vein subsequently eroded away leaving empty space. Gravity caused one side to partially fall away resulting in the change in gap.
That's interesting. I've heard a story about some big rocks in old family farm I came from. Some farmers dug pretty big rocks to plant fields in some places and by the next year they had to go and do it again! How did those big rocks keep coming to some of these places like it was a 'homey' place for the big ones? Very curious about rocks, maybe they are somehow alive...
considering the fact that there were no burn marks on the rock, I'm going to say it was flatout erosion.
Lightning CAN break a rock in half as long as it has a path of least resistance through it (such as an eroded path down the middle) but i think this one was done just simply by time and seasons changing.

This is what happens:
·rain falls, some of it leaks into the rock...
·eventually the water freezes, if it ever does...
· and then the boulder cracks, eventually over millions of years the boulder turns into sand
P.S: Lighting can't do that :P
