He did have pet rats, even before this title song was released in 1972 when MJ was 13 or 14. It was because of his love for rodents that made the song even more special, which is evident in the heart of Michael singing this song.

I've never heard a recording where you can really hear him singing in a transition phase, vocally. When my voice was chagning, I couldn't sing shit! Here's a kid who's probably logged 100s of hours on that strained voice in the previous few MONTHS, and he's still singing it great.
