The bbc had a programme called "Trawlermen" and it followed several Scottish white fish boats and an Irish whitefish boat. The Irish boat needed to fill its quota so set its nets, It caught too much, which cant be helped! However they landed this fish rather than dump it. They got a £400,000 fine, catch taken off them and jailed. So yes, sink the boat and claim the insurance (inc new boat & full quota)

a smarter way to do it would be to have each boat have its own quota for the year, having them free to full ther quota how ever they want. this way boats wouldn't be dumping their whole catch like in this video when the fleet's quota filled up. in the US we wouldn't have to throw fish over EVERY single trip. the fish populations are booming over here btw. the draggers are only towing for 20-30 mins to get their limits. more often than not their trying to avoid fish instead of trying to find them

Everytime we haul up there will be at least 20 different species in the net and we dont have quota for all of them. The answer is to let us keep everything but restrict the amount of days we fish.

Right now we are restricted to only 130 days at sea per year with quotas on what we can keep too. Thats 220 days we are closed for business every year and the days were open we have to throw some of our profits away.

I saw the same exact thing when I was dragging(US) and its depressing as hell. here each boat has daily quotas and limited days at sea. the gov't still claims fish stocks are down but we'd often haul back over 10k lbs of cod for a 30min tow(very short for fish dragging) but we are limited to 800lbs a day, so you pick the nicest ones out and throw the rest over, mostly dead.

@dustyC420 SMARTER regulations would be to take our daily limits for each species i.e. yellow tail flounder (200lbs) and multiply it by the number of days at sea(32) = 6400lbs and have that be our yearly quota. then we could land what we catch(and often kill) instead of throwing thousands of lbs over day after day and burning wayy more fuel for the same amt of fish. but thats what happens when theres ignorant people making the laws, I'm not familiar w/ EU regs but I'm sure its similar. a shame.

The fishermen you see in the video are NOT disrespecting EU rules, they are abiding by them. They have been forced to dump the fish as it is an offence under EU rules to land fish they have ran out of quota for. Its the rules that are wrong NOT the fishermen, A better conservation method is to restrict the amount of days they can spend at sea but allow them to land whatever they catch. It would eliminate unneccessary discarding and allow them to land more fish.

That may be true. But if you see a a fishschooling in your sounder, youre allowed to probe to see what it is. On the video, you can see that there is only one sort of fish that is dumped. Therefore, they have been trawling the wrong place. I guess a lot of fishermen dont care wheter they have to dump fish. I have seen portugeese and spanish fishermen putting in as many driftnets as they can, not selecting sort or anything. They just fish anything.

There was in my view a simpler way of "sorting" the problem that I suggested many times (but was never listened to by Brussells)

This was to fit an electronic log to fishing vessels , similar to a lorry tachograph. To record hours spent fishing . ALL caught fish would be kept. BUT .. fishing of it would be reduced in terms of hours and days at sea.

What really causes this is laws started in the 70s that prohibit cannerys from owning fishing boats. Before this cannerys where forced by law to process all fish caught by there fleet. Once the fleet became privetized the cannerys could refuse to purchase certain types of fish. Leaving the fishermen with no recourse but to dump tons of fish he cant sell.

Yea what people have to realise is that these fish aren't unwanted so this isn't a good title for the video. Fishermen are set quotas for how much fish they can land for sale. So by law if they exceed their quota they have to dump fish overboard like shown in the video, all dead going to the sea bottom such a waste! Fishermen have the toughest job in the world and these quota's along with ever-rising fuel prices is cripling them and they are finding it tought to make a living.

Guys please realise it's in the fishermans interest to have sustainable, well managed oceans. Under the common european fisheries policy, it is not well managed. All your cod quota (the ammount allocated to you for a month) might be caught in one morning, so you cant keep anymore, or you get prosecuted. But you still have varying quotas for about 10-20 other species, all of which you need to catch to make a wage. It is not in fishermens interests to dump good fish, but by law theres no choice:o(

Fish is of course dead after the trawl. Is fish which the crews can use to ganin their wages but they are not allowed to get that kind of fish. They all wish that just putting a label in the net which say NO MORE COD TODAY made the fish not enter in the net. Then the other choice is fishing wild fish to feed the farmed cod/turbot ... as is beeing done nowdays to mantain the eviormentally respectfull farms

All fish is valuable but sometimes they are not allowd to catch certain kind because they have ended qith the quota, but fish is not a fastener that you can produce 10 units or 100 as demanded. You catch the fish in the amount which is in the sea. Sometimes there is mor ehake than megrims some times not, but you are not affecting only into 1 part of the whole chain but affects as it is and is catched as it is on sea. Not as Bruxelles says
