"Nowadays he'd be taught to defend better than that"
Nowadays he wouldn't be taught nearly anything at all since the technical "skills" are pathetic and are probably at an all time low. Most of the footage is from when he was already on the downside. He certainly wasn't a slick defensive fighter but he wasn't nearly as bad defensively as most people seem to think he was. He used to slip and roll with a lot more punches than people gave him credit for and often played possum to lure guys in.
cant believe Cerdan fought for 10 rounds with a dislocated arm, i know this vid is about Jake but damn that Frenchman had some stones to stand toe to toe with Jake La Motta with one arm! cmon people that deserves some thumbs up
@lezzabo it wasn't that he wasn't taught to defend properly, he chose that style of sticking his head out, gaurd down low because he liked to take the punishment. If you read his autobiography you'll see how he suffered from severe self destructive behaviour, he enjoyed getting hit as he hated himself and believed he deserved the punishment. To be honest he did deserve it outside the ring he was a horrible person!
I'm pretty sure they added the sound effects because television wasn't popular yet, so people listening to the fight on the radio had to know when they hit.
@Rigotto90 "they added the sound effects because television wasn't popular yet, so people listening to the fight on the radio had to know when they hit."
Television was already popular and the added sound effects had nothing to do with radio as they didn't exist on the original broadcast. At some point the sound effects were added to the re-broadcast highlight reels as was the commentary heard on these highlights.
Im just wondering, when people talk about 'chins' do they relate it to weight classes? I mean Jake is one of my all time faves, but what if he got hit by a heavyweight? A Tyson, Tua, Marciano for example
@genabet123 "Where is the defense and guard them days ???"
Try watching footage of guys like Robinson and Pep. I don't think that anyone back then ever used LaMotta as an example of defensive boxing at it's finest. Also these are highlights, often taken from late in the fight when both guys were tired and mixing it up. If LaMotta took half as many punches as many people seem to think that he did he would have been brain dead decades ago.
Wow, it looks like LaMotta is getting owned, but he actually isnt. lol

But my god, he was tenacious and he had, arguably, the best 15 round stamina in the modern era.

Nowadays he'd be taught to defend better than that, and with a chin like his + his punching power, he'd be fuckin difficult to beat!

@genabet123 La Motta's known for being easy to hit, so he's a bad example for defense. lol.
