@KhemiKool Not only does he utilize octaves, but tenths as well. TENTHS!!!
Excellent point. I thought so, but I needed someone to verify this. It's amazing. and requires total independent facility of the hands. (I don't even think Phineas Newborn played 10ths!)
Benny slips in quite a few references to other jazz tunes. I caught "beginning to see the light", and definitely heard one more that I don't know the name of. Has anyone else got more of them?
Hey jeez do you have the rest of this gig? I used to have it somewhere on a video years ago as a kid, man I watched it until you could hardly see anything anymore! They did this great ellington medley, benny green play this animal solo, just incredible stuff. would be great to see if you had it
I don't know the name of the original gig, no. I have tried a good few times to look for it online, but never could find it. Maybe someone watching here could put it up if they have it, it was such a brilliant vid.
Benny's style approaches here Bud Powell's, legato, imaginative. Oscar's is more warm, powerfull, articulated, vast, and sophisticated and lyric (in the slow tunes). He was the master of Monty, Gene, and Benny, and all of us.
Yeah... it seemed like he was just kind of stringing together memorized licks at some points. But he was definitely still able to make it original and cool.
its all preference my friend. All those dudes have their own style. Personally I like Gene the best, then monty then oscar then benny. They are all killing and they all play the piano the way i like to hear it played. Gene has the most simple approach but his feel is unmatched. Benny is the most "quirky" of all . and oscar the fastest fingers.
@jazz24p7 would appreciate having the number of the CD. I live in France and will try to get the DVD through my friend in Germany. - then let you know. The WDR is a great musical organisation - I used to live near Cologne for two years. The german radio and TV organisations are sponsored by each independent "Länder" ( or state), and so you have the wonderful musical organisations in Hanover, Munich, Berlin, Stutgart, Hamburg. See if you can get on internet the "SAT" tv programmes in Germany.
Benny just sets such a high standard of excellence. What a phenomenal musician.

I am talking about his arms waving. Being a bassplayer (big bands), we always hated conducters, since drummer or me could kick band off any time.
Of course in studio it was sometimes needed, but shit - everybody was a sight reader, could see pp or forte - so why conduct?
All you need is to say: One Two, One Two Three - - -
John pointing at sections looks ridiculous - they (even Germans) could read!

John Clayton is confusing the band.

He's channeling Oscar, Phineas Newborn and even some old time, greasy Bud Powell bebop, but it's natural. Really amazing!

@jtromsness Cheers man, you've made my day! There's another quote at 1:05 that I think might be "Rockin' in Rhythm" but I'm not sure.
Also, I think he quotes "Cottontail" at 3:27 :)

Benny Green and Jeff Hamilton is my favorite era of the Ray Brown Trio. Benny has this style that even Oscar Peterson didn't have.
Best Ray Brown trio pianists in order is:
1. Benny Green 2. Monty Alexander 3. Oscar Peterson 4. Gene Harris 5. Geoff Keezer 6. Larry Fuller
