i love nat, everybody loves him, i guess. he's so blessed with that incredibly wonderful voice. truly GOD loved nat, too. his songs never fail to bring tears to my eyes. hauntingly beautiful. makes me forget my own pain while wishfully thinking to share in his. thanks so much for sharing his songs to us.
i am simply breathless & speechless listening to Nat's. he's got this distinctive melancholy in his voice it brings out the tears i so try hard to keep within every time i hear his songs. thanks for sharing. please don't get tired sharing his music with us. it makes me forget my own heart aches and share his pain &happiness instead.
This rendition leaves me breathless. I agree, no woman other than Lalah Hathaway sings this song with feeling. Alicia Keyes messes up this song. Oh, Naima on the American Idol introduced this song to me and I have listened to every version that I could find on the internet. Naima did such a good job that I had to go on the web and find Donny's version. I never knew that anyone else sang the song. Good Job
THE ONLY VERSION that holds its own to Donny Hathaway...Ya know Nat is right there as always...VERY NICE.... He has a romantic feel...Touched with a bit of sadness.. DONNY is Total sadness, Both are GREAT!!! NO WOMAN can sing it..I have yet to hear ONE version by a woman that sounded right.
You might apprciate Will Downing on this one. I think Gerald Albright played saxophone for him on that one also. Reminded me of Johnny Hartman and John Coltrane, probably no accident. Nothing but the best this afternoon.
@themysteryrapper Then clearly you can't hear very well. Nina Simone? Billie Holiday? Aretha Franklin-- even Alicia Keys has more sincerity than this charming, but rather bloodless rendition by Nat.
One of the 10 most beautiful songs in My Life .......covered by many people ....but Nat`s Version is the most Definitive ....I feel and think .... & .want to cry ..the whole time ......such beauty .....TIMELESS!!!!!! thasnx for placing ....this absolute Gem ...
@lopescone You're welcome my friend ! I think this cd of Nat in trio is more than a must ! I don't know if you're a guy but if you are, I understand and tell you that we are all big romantic boys crying on our lost loves and, no matter what they say, girls are much more pragmatic than we are !!
This song was a popular dance band song of the late 1930's early 1940's. Considering the world was going to war made the song mean even more to those who loved.
@mortygwhiz Thanks for the precision. Even without knowing that, I had the feeling of some kind of "good times are slipping away". That really gave an emotional boost while you're listening to this wonderful song. Thanks a lot for the poster. The sound quality is very good too.
What a beautiful beautiful song his voice is so gorgeous...brings back so many memories of my dad when I was a little girl..god bless you dad in heaven today.
Im scared Im an acoholic I constantly listen to stuff like this and Iove it but it makes me cry every time. I yearn for the past and I drink far too much as a result, its like being really ill but I dont want to get better.......
I understand my friend, I know where your coming from, so if you want to drop me a line then we can become friends and be there for each other in sad and lonely times.............
Nat is dead because he smoked 4 packs a day..he never tried to stop and if a doctor said"Nat this smoking is killing you"he would of kept smoking anyway...to bad like many before him he died before his time.
There is only one other artist that can sing this song and that's Donny Hathaway. Nat King Cole and Donny Hathaway are the only two singers that can sing this song.
this is the 1949 version with trio, why not try the sublime version with gordon jenkins he recorded a few years later ... (i posted it two weeks ago ...)
Nat King Cole...was a gift

To be honest... after all I'd read about this version, this is rather disappointing. A crooner's work. I'll stick with Donny's and Nina's.

Nat King Cole's voice is simply beautiful. I like Reuben Studdard's version also, but I don't think any version is better than Donny Hathaway (IMO).

You have made the first GREAT step admiting you are powerless over the lure of booze.
Booze wreaks life, you know that.
Please, please get your good self to an A.A. meeting.
If you stick with it, your life will turn around and be brilliant. I promise. Husband been there, done that.
Keep in touch.
