Sometimes you need to see more info on these people. Perhaps they have a long list of felonies on their record, which makes it very difficult to get a job. The other issues are substance abuse, alcoholism and/or mental illness. Most have families and have exhausted their families help. Many got kicked out of their relatives and friends homes, because of their behavior.

i want to thank you for posting these videos. I went to NYC for the first time last year and some of the homeless there broke my heart. You could tell which ones were on drugs just because of the way they acted, but most of them looked like they had nothing left to live for. Its so heartbreaking. This one guy in particular broke my heart and i gave him what i could around $50. I still think of him. If he's warm, if he's got a warm place to sleep, if he's okay. I still cry when I think of him.

The temp agency that Percy talks about is being sued by EEOC because of racial profiling and discrimination. Some of the companies who had contracts with this agency specified they didn't want certain age groups and blacks.

I hope this agency is closed because they are predatory. They charge for transportation and to cash their own checks. The homeless are lucky to leave with $25.00 after 8 to 10 hours of work.

The disability I have does not prevent me from owning a home. It prevents me from driving. And that is a hellish thing. I live out in a rural area where there are no stores to buy my food, clothes, neccessities. It makes me very angry that out in the countryside that we do not have public transportation here.

I've been homeless off and on for a few years and here's how it breaks down. Maybe 15 to 20% have mental disabilities, another 15 to 20% decide to work hard and get off the streets. And for the other 60 to 70% it's a choice and a lifestyle they become comfortable with (addictions, free handouts, many learn to play the social services system and people).

And people with their good intentions enable homelessness.

I became homeless because Social Security denied my disability benefits and there are so many who are homeless because of one or more denials.

In Cleveland the numbers with mental disabilities is much higher than your figure plus there are a lot of felons who can't find work.

Many are homeless because of the economy but are working some sort of job.

Unfortunately, people overlook the homeless women with children who are sheltered because of domestic abuse or the death of a husband.

Is it realistic to expect everyone who's sympathetic to the plight of the homeless to help in the way that that fits in with your idea of how people should be helping? She's already doing a lot more than most just by making this video and spreading a sympathetic and non-exploitative message about the situation.

I know by my own experience that the (so-called) social system is not at all user-friendly or easy, but seriously broken. The politicians think they spend more than enough money, but it is not an effective solution. How about spending less on the present military (Iraq)/foreign aid and take care of the vets and other poor first? No, that would make too much sense.

By the way, I was homeless for 5 months due to denial from Social Security for disability. There are thousands of people who became homeless because of disability.
