"you're the shit" could actually be a strong compliment in english, kinda like "kick ass" doesn't mean anything bad. FYI

I see where he is coming from. "You're the shit!" is a complement in English (American English anyway), but it is not a respectable complement. It sounds like something a drunk guy would say to another drunk guy if he shot a basketball and it went in the hoop for standing right next to it. If he thought she was good, there are a million different things he could say that are much more appealing than "You're the shit!".
