Nausea, dizziness and shortness of breath is never normal - you need a full evaluation by a physician, most likely. If your condition is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo you can see a physical therapist for canalith repositioning techniques.
I prepare my self for an attack. I am also going to take a vacation to Florida and I'm going by plane. Will I be affected by my vertigo worse? Please write back
Please help. I am only 13 and I have recentley been getting horrible vertigo attacks. I need to know if this is normal for a teenager at this age. I have had attacks where I have nausea and I'm left gasping for air. I asked my doctor and she recommended syringing my ear. Will this help me in my case? And if not, what should I do. I feel like I'm spinning when I'm still. And I also feel like I'm spinning in confined spaces. I feel it less out doors. What should I do about this and how can
i'm going through this right now i'm taking meclazine 3x a day for 10 days if the pills and exercises don't work i gotta go see another dr. hope this works - i had this 7 yrs ago then feb 25 i got iagain - man i'm pissed off - check out dizzyfix - interesting
i just did this and fek me i feel so much different, i was dizzy just standing from sitting and couldn't lay on my back, i did this and it is still there a little bit but nothing like it was, so im going to do it a few more times and see what happens,,
@kempouk You should also see a physical therapist to check for factors which may contribute to dizziness or for conditions that could masquerade as dizziness. Never rely on the internet as your sole source of medical information.
@cervelo58 Actually they would need to see a doctor since PT'S, not even DPT's have diagnosis within their scope of practice, then they could see a PT if warranted.
@drreedindeed DrReedIndeed is correct - physicians have the only unlimited license in medicine and, in some states, a physician referral is required before patients can access a physical therapist.
Physician screening under fee-for-service often leads to excessive costs and poorer outcomes, eg: routine ordering of long-term anti-vestibular meds, like Antivert, may actually INCREASE your risk for falls.
Seek out practitioners who treat a high volume of your condition regardless of license.
I have an episode every so many months. But lately I started pilates and am having them during class. I have to stop and close my eyes, and try not to focus on distances or nearsight, but rather middle ground like the person in front of me. It's been a challenge. Today was an episode upon waking from sleep. My husband, for the first time, is experiencing this with putting eye drops in. I think because he drops his head back while standing.
Canalith Repostioning is best done by identifying the affected side and then treating it with the technique shown. Does laying on one side or turning your head to one side provoke symptoms? Does the room tend to spin on one particular direction? These simple tests may identify the affected side in BPPV (vertigo).
It's very important to see an ENT too, to make sure that this IS your problem. I have BPPV but was also diagnosed with MAV, which I believe is termed migraine-associative vertigo.
@spookycc hi mate i also suffer from BPPV and MAV for the past 2 years and have gone to so many ENT's and Neurologists but none have helped me infact i have just wasted my time and my money on them so can you please tell me how can i get rid of them..
@TheChelsea4life BPPV responds very quickly to simple interventions performed by PT, ENT, and family doctors. If you have not responded in 2 years it seems unlikely that you have BPPV. - Tim
@cervelo58 i get extremely dizzy when i lie on my left side.i cant sleep without pillows as i get dizzy.my left ear rocks and i always have a very stiff neck (probably because of BPPV).i cant move my head upward and downward quickly and when i do i get dizzy.sometimes my both jaws are stuck with each other when my ear rocks
Does the room spin to the right? Do you get dizzy when you lay on your right side? Is there stuffiness or occluded hearing in your right ear (less specific finding)?
These are the findings that point to one 'inner ear' or the other.
Your best bet is to find a good PT, ENT or other doctor who can diagnose your problem. Not the internet.
interesting - I slept on my back the last two nights and I usually don't - now I have the vertigo - I will avoid sleeping on my back. Also was doing yoga - downward dog which I read is also bad for vertigo
do you think a inversion table can cause vertigos being upside down? i have purchased it for my back and works good until i started fallin asleep upside down and i became dizzy this is the first this ever happen to me on the inversion table, i was wondering can i do the maneuver on the inversion table?
You have to do this repeatedly for five minutes three times a day for it to work. Doing it just once is not enough. A once only maneuver is done differently and is called The Semont maneuver - it needs a very quick position shift with a final (very quick) shift back to the starting position.
This works, I thought I would go mad until I did this over and over - for about 2 weeks. It stopped for like a year. If it returns, then you just repeat this exercise...I recommend sticking with it.. Seems like the more you do this, and before you go to sleep, it keeps it away.
It worked like a charm for me for two days and poof, the vertigo came back on the morning of the third day...seems to hang around all morning and mysteriously by afternoon is gone. Why. Anyway am still doing the exercise and am tired of the nausea and vertigo....poor you who had it five years
I am responding to this 5 months after your comment. Hopefully, your problem is gone but if it is because of crystals in the ear, it could easily return. Probably the reason you had it in the morning was due to laying down through the night, moving crystals into a bad position. During the day, your head would be up and the crystals would move into a safe position. Sleeping on my back is a killer. If it does return, you learn techniques, but also figure out what positions to avoid.
@cmpm439 you are so right about sleeping on the back! i dont sleep on my back anymore that s why i didnt go to those things back until the other day i happen to be on my inversion table to strenghtn my bones , i was mad about it... i feel a little nasuea and maybe a little light headed but no dizziness tho it seems like it takes days to get back right again...
I was taught that if the symptoms are in the right ear canal, you turn the head to the left and lay down on the right side (the same side as the symptoms) first. Then reverse and turn head to the right and lay down on the left side. If the patient has vertigo symptoms , perform this 5-10 repetitions 3x per day until pt has not vertigo for 2 consecutive days. The movements must be performed rapidly and should actually provoke symptoms.
What do you do if you don't know which ear is affected? They told me at the hospital it had to do with the crystals but not much more than that.

Do you keep doing the same side over and over again or do you do left and then right and then left and then right, etc?

Good point - although there is no evidence to back you up.
The original Brandt-Daroff maneuver (from the 1980's) is described at the frequency and duration you mention.
This recommendation is based on expert consensus - at best a 'C' evidence grade.
No recent studies on Brandt-Daroff support its efficacy or effectiveness.
Nevertheless, the risk of harm is low and the potential for benefit, albeit slight, is still there.
Thanks for your comment.

Sonebone7,
Current evidence suggests that one time per day is sufficient.
Remember, do not let your head hang over the side of the table.
