Cockatoos aren't bad! lol. But I've been told they have one of the worst bites of the parrot family due to the way they move their beak. But conversly, they generaly have very calm and sweet personalities. (though I have been bitten by a couple of them) I can say that after being bitten by a cockatoo and a Bolivian blue and gold macaw that the macaw was WAY worse!
Charlie is a beautiful and lucky bird to have you. I misunderstood in your comment about being afraid of cockatoos. You are not afraid of other birds.
@birdlady423 Charlie is a very sweet and gentle bird. I adopted him around 3 years ago. I also have 2 other rescued birds- a conure and a Meyer's parrot. I don't really know why I started being afraid of cockatoos- I used to work with them and I've never been bitten by one. I am also wary of Amazons too, but I don't have any fear or anxiety of macaws or any other parrots! It's strange. I do love cockatoos though- they have such huge personalities! :)
Looks like you loved Charlie alot..Did you have to give him up? When you foster do you have the choice of keeping them? I keep my birds wings clipped so all they can do is run around the house but they still have enough feathers to where if they jump off you they can soar to the ground instead of just falling.I'm a bird lover the hubby aint plus I have dogs which are contained so thats another reason they dont fly.The way they look at you melts you to peices.
Just wondering if there's a website to go on that will tell you about fostering birds in your own state no matter where it is? I love African Greys I will get 1 some day when I can get the money ,they cost alot unless I can get 1 from a rescue that people foster like you. Birds are precious I have 3 right now and the 4th next weekend.
If I had known then what I know, my 1st Grey would have been a rescue. I'm am aware now of how many birds need homes. I agree that you MUST know what you are getting into and be prepared and committed to giving them what they need. I can't think of any other pet that needs so much attention and daily stimulation to keep them happy and healthy. My 2nd Grey is a rescue bird that was abused mentally and after 4 years had made remarkable improvements. I agree...ADOPT ONLY! Search AFRICAN GREY FRANK
I know. My first bird- Scout- was not a rescue but after getting him, I realized what a major commitment it was and he changed my life- literally. It really is overwhelming at times. I have 3 and I am done now. I will have these guys for the rest of my life and I love them to death, but like I said, it's overwhelming. Thanks for your comment! :)
@akalegs I totally agree. Breeders and pet stores only contribute to the problem by selling birds to just anyone. Then people realise they can't handle the bird and it is abused, neglected, or given up. I volunteer at a bird rescue and I have seen first hand what happens to alot of these wonderful animals. I have 2 Blue and Gold Macaws myself and I won't have any more lol!
I think you should say they dont make suitable pets for everyone... if you truly believed your statement you would not have them as pets yourself. One thing I would like to point out is without captive bred parrots, certain species would be extinct. And with the way we are treating this planet, I strongly believe rather soon we wont have a lot of the beautiful parrots we do now living in the wild. Captive birds may be their only hope.
if you knew anything about what you are saying, you would know that captive-bred parrots cannot be released into the wild which means a) people have to take care of the parrots that are already in captivity so OF COURSE i have them as "pets" but i ADOPTED and did not buy because i don't think they should be pets. and b) captive breeding does absolutely NOTHING for the preservation of wild species. so what? we're going to preserve them just to be in zoos!? give me a break.
Birds in captivity aren't to be released; it is up to the government to buy them from the breeders and release them in the wild... It is breeders' business to sell parrots and it is government's responsibility to buy them and release them
you don't know anything about it, obviously. birds born in captivity cannot survive in the wild. everything they learn about survival they learn from their bird parents, so if they are born in captivity, they know nothing about how to survive. what is the point of breeding in captivity? there is none. breeders do not breed for conservation, they breed to make money. period.
My mother had an African Grey years ago. It was nasty though. No petting it without risking your digits. One day it escaped its cage by figuring out the lock and flew away across the river, never to be seen again.
Definately looks like a happy bird, only birds ive ever had as pets were a pair of finchs.i bought them cage and all for 10 dollars .The people that i got them had no business with pets. They got rid of them because they never sang or made any noise.Reason being they left there cage covered up 24/7.One day these people stopped by and could not believe what they were hearing, singing birds:)
no, they have their "hot spots" and I just keep newspaper on the floor there. they're actually really good about it and my apt is cleaner than most people w/o pets!
Yes, he does. I am going to go to the store and get him some baby shoes. He really does have this shoe fetish. He also has a bottle fetish too... ?!? Go figure!

@july7nyc I am so glad that you have rescue birds and promote rescue. I just made a playlist and added Foster Parrots.
I bet if you got a few cuddles and kisses from Geronimo, he would help your fear.
Have a safe and happy weekend!

That shoe reminds me of a boot I once had... probably parrot proof but not dog resistant. ;-)

Believe me, unless it's made of iron (and even then there is a possibility) no shoe or boot is parrot-proof...
