  • Also, at address, everything is set up to in line with the target appart from my shoulders. My swing is also only off plane till about half way back, the rest is all on plane

  • Hey shawn, I use the brace tilt all the time now and its going great however when I 'brace' I tend to close my shoulders at address, causing the club to come back a little flat which, causes a nice little draw (I'm not complaining!) Does this really matter, or should I try to correct it??

  • Shawn, just wondering, hows your buddy Neal in the video doing? Has he made any progress in his golf swing? A tip from one of your other videos about feeling the weight staying on the left side during the backswing was what put it all together for me! I think it stopped me from swaying back in the backswing. Thanks again for your dedication.

  • @tsmith109 Neal is doing great! Low 80's now and getting mentally stronger! Thanks for your comment and kind words! Shawn

  • as much as i enjoy 'stop crashing' i think this is prob best clemshaw vid! just this set-up gives you a fighting chance!

  • Hi Shawn, I find that when I do this braced tilt, I tend to pull hook the ball a fair bit. Would this be because the ball position is too far back? Or that Im losing the spine angle/tilt? Thanks for your videos they have taught me heaps. I especially like the short game vids. I have never chipped with so much confidence! I just gotta get my driving sorted out now!

  • @teaseler Ball back no; loosing spine angle yes but why? Because the focus to the target has been compromised by improper perception; see "golf pro lesson tilted spiral" part 1, 2 and 3; especially 3 for your case;

    And you are welcome to come discuss with us on the forum! Shawn

  • hi shawn, when i make my backswing, my left knee has to collapse a little bit to be able to get more hip turn....This collapsing makes me loosing the feel of the braced tilt to the left side....so it's hard to get back to this braced feeling in the downswing, any tips on this one? snookie.

  • @147snookie Master the feet together and one leg drills first; then get busy with the step drills to get the timing and tempo of the swing; then you can put it together with the left heel coming off the ground in the backswing and feeling that nice plant to complete the backswing like in the "downswing weightshift; Shawn Clement" video;

    Shawn

  • Shawn, on the down swing it feels like the weight is really going into the left heel and the outside of the left foot with the ball of the left big toe rising up slightly on the finish. I am having difficulty getting the right amount of move to left side. I seem to have trouble turning my left hip out of the way. Getting against a wall and doing the Hogan Power Drill, I think my pelvis may even be moving a little bit toward the ball on the down swing. Suggestions??

  • so if I understand this correctly , the swing' to the target' may not be the flag- it is in the direction of the tilt ie - out to the right. If you swing to the target being the flag , you would get an over the top move? thanks Shawn

  • Shawn has his shit straight. He appears both extremely knowledgeable and intuitive not to mention a fine golfer. I believe these videos have been dumbed down for our own benefit. Just listen, do what he says, he has done all the thinking.

    Great Work

  • Shawn my arms dont want to elevate. They want to go in, up, and over. When I try to elevate the arms I feel really disconnected. Am I just going to have to get over this feeling. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Jeff

  • @jsmyers7,

    If you're coming from a flatter position in the backswing where the arms are a lot more wrapped around you, allowing the arms to float into the backswing will definitely have a more free feeling. Remember, the sensation is the turn of the body tossing the arms into the backswing with the hands and handle of the club in front of the chest. It may not be easy at first to give it away to gravity, but you'll see quickly that it's the only way to swing uninterrupted to the target. -Matt

  • @jsmyers7,

    ...and have a look at "Golf Pro Lesson Arms in Front of Body", that should put it all together for you.

  • Hi Shawn, I almost feel like I'm backing up to the ball with my butt leading on the downswing but the power and clean contact is amazing. Feels weird though. Thanks Rich. Big improvement

  • Thanks Rich;

    Like Wendel below you, see the videos I listed plus the following: "Golf pro lesson timing and tempo update" and "golf pro lesson perpetual motion drill"

    Shawn

  • Hi Shawn:

    I'm trying to figure out the proper feel for the braced tilt position at address and having a bit of trouble. In your earlier work (articles & DVD) you talk about a "pre-turn," which looks a lot like the braced tilt. How the pre-turn similar or different from the "braced tilt" you describe now? Or is it just new terminology?

  • Hey Wendel; same thing just different words;

    The best series for this is my "Golf Pro lesson tilted spiral" part 1,2 and 3 and I also have a couple more vids on the way to make it even more polished; but you definitely need to watch the tilted spiral series;

    Shawn

  • I've been hovering around the 16 hcp mark for a while, playing some nice golf due a lot to watching your videos shawn. I revisited this video last week, i must admit this movement felt really uncomfortable whenever i tried it. Now I feel I've got this movement down as I shot 78 yesterday, best round this year that took 2 off my handicap. I feel this could be the missing link that was holding me back. Wonderful stuff !!

  • Thanks man! It goes very well with the "golf pro lesson tilted spiral" part 1, 2 and 3 series; Shawn

  • Hi Shawn, i left you a PM can you look at my swings on my Videos page, Can you see where i am going wrong with regard your philosophy.

    I bought your DVD, excellent!!!

    Anyone else fell free to comment

    Ty

  • Go to his web page for Shawn to analyze your swing, right at the top.

  • Hey Ty;

    I would like to see the other 2 views to get a better idea before comment; see the "swing analysis services" page of my site for the instructions as to what clubs and angles to send;

    Thanks for the comment! Shawn

  • I went out and shot a 44 for nine , the best thing was that I was on in TWO on every par 4. Thanks to the braced tilt I now have a way to golf better. thanks shawn !

  • shawn,,must admit,,was kind of sceptic at first about this tilt & BRACE,,but took it to the range (hitting off grass) & geez what a difference,,,even my miss hits went straight & were acceptable,,,,the big tip for me was when you explained starting at 4:44 about the turn of the hips and the toss of the arms upward,,,,,,,,,just a quick question shawn,,,after you tilt & brace,,how far would you say your head moves (2:18),,,,,,,,,,,,thanks for your videos,,bob

  • Hi Shawn,

    How do I setup so that my braced tilt isn't too much or too little, but just right? Right now I kind of just bump my hips forward and my shoulders back like you to some tilt that's comfortable. Is there an easy way to set the proper braced tilt angle at address?

    Thanks!

  • hey shawn, i really love your teaching video and enjoy very much watching them for learning purpose, it's really useful, as you have demonstrated the proper swing movements of your body in order to make a proper golf swing in a very detailed way.

  • Hey Shawn, I checked out those videos and have been hitting my irons great! I used to have a litttle knocking sound when I would hit my irons and now I am striking the ball so smooth. Still having some trouble with driver, I am hitting a Cleaveland Launcher 460ti reg flex shaft. Do you think a stiff flex could help or is it all in my head? Thx Mike

  • All I can tell you is to check out my videos with the driver "golf pro lesson modern driver" and "golf pro lesson braced tilt part 2"; also check to make sure you do not have too shallow a backswing with the driver; Shawn

  • Hey Shawn, I was working on getting that proper tilt today and I was hitting my irons a little fat. I aM not sure if I was getting stuck on my left side, I didnt feel off balance at all but I was hitting about a half inch behind the ball. it was going in the correct direction but it was coming up about 20 yards short. It seems like the tilt is the one part of your swing sequence I can't figure out. Thx Mike

  • Hey Mike;

    Have a look at the "golf pro lesson tilted spiral" part 1,2 and 3 series as well as "golf pro lesson through the ball" You need to make sure that your focus is on the target so as to not default to the ball; if you focus on the ball you will tend to hit it fat a lot; check these out and let me know;

    Shawn

  • hi shawn

    think the videos are brilliant but seem to top the shots using this technique do you keep moving your weight forward or try to get it back to the centre on the down swing

  • Hey Sean; the perfect series of videos for you are the "Golf Pro lesson tilted Spiral" part 1, 2 and 3 videos, the "golf pro lesson learn your golf machine" as well as the "golf pro lesson be a solid ball striker" videos. Other good ones are the "Golf Pro lesson contact and spin" and the "Golf Pro lesson compress through the ball". Enjoy! Shawn

  • Shawn, when using the Hogan power move when I turn the left hip I lose my spine angle and tend to swing from the outside, do you advocate a slight push off from the right hip and then a turn of the left hip so you keep the right shoulder moving under your head and keeping the swing more from the inside.

  • A really great video that complements the Hogan power series is the "golf pro lesson downswing weightshift" and the "golf pro lesson 2008 golf swing review" part 1 and 2. The other series not to be missed is the "golf pro lesson tilted spiral" part 1, 2 and 3; Thanks for the comment! Shawn

  • Shawn, I watched the video Lesson Tiger's Knee Fix and I see how the knee is flexed at impact. Maybe I was swinging to fast and comming up to quickly.

    thanks

    Buzz

  • Shawn,I'm now a brace and tilter but out on the course yesterday durning the tose and fall I top a lot of shots.Thinking about it later it seems that my front leg straighten at impact. Should that front leg be straighten(locked) at impact or keep a slight bend until after impact? My spine angle is good and hands are ahead of the club at impact. Thanks Shawn for all your help BTW with so many video what else does your DVD cover?I wish you were teaching in San Diego.Thinking about relocating? Buzz

  • great information on the swing. it's been helping me alot. on the braced tilt, does the clubface open up a bit at address? it seems it has to, it feels uncomfortable if i don't. thank you .

  • Yes! See the "golf pro lesson be a solid ballstriker" and "golf pro lesson tilted spiral part 3" as a great add on to this video;

    Shawn

  • Two things: this system works, stay at it. I can now hit a PW as far as I used to hit a nine iron (actually farther). Second, I find raising the left heel a little on the back swing really helps me get down and through the ball. I think it gets those old baseball reflexes working.

  • You bet! Thanks for the comment!

    Shawn

  • Sorry for the confusion, but I meant at address. When you brace on your left side, are your shoulders open to the target line? Also, what about the club face, is is open to the target line or square? It seems like when I brace on my left side at address, my shoulders are closed and the club face a little open. Is your right hip closer to the target than your left foot, or on top of it?

  • See Braced Tilt Part 2 for more info; shoulders closed and face can be open or square depending on the club-grip relationship...Hips (pelvis too) is closed and the knees have already started to rotate...Shawn

  • Shawn, quick question. When you are "stacking on your left side", does that consist of just laterally flexing your torso to your right or laterally flexing your torso to your right along with a little bit of tright orso rotation? I guess what I am trying to ask is, when you stack on your left side, are your shoulders closed to your target line a little bit? Thanks so much for the great videos. They have helped my game tremendously!!!!!

    Jake

  • Correct; you are behind the ball at address; so you are already in your turn and your arms are already in the process of tracking gravity into the backswing; see Tilted Spiral part 3 as well as "timing and tempo update...Shawn

  • hey shawn! your videos are great.. in this video your demonstrating the braced tilt using an iron.. DOES IT ALSO APPLY FOR WOODS AND DRIVERS? thanks!

  • Thanks for the comment and question!

    ESPECIALLY TO DRIVERS! SEE "golf pro lesson great driver tip" and "golf pro lesson modern driver" part 1 and 2; see also "golf Pro lesson Fairway woods and skipping technique"

    Shawn

  • hey shawn, thx 4 posting all these g8 vids, im having a prob overswing the club, wots ur best drill 2 get me out of this bad habit?

  • Have a look at the following: "Golf Pro Lesson Proper Spine Tilt Angle" which deals with overswing as well; then watch the arm section on the you tube shawn page of my website; see the "golf pro lesson Training aids" part 1 and 2 and get yourself a Izzo Connection band like the blue one you see me using and describing there;

    Shawn

  • I've recently changed to the braced tilt I was previously very upright, I feel more power in my swing now. Ive noticed I take lees of a divot and sometimes catch the ball thin. Is there anything I should be looking at for the cause of this?? Thanks!!

  • Just watch you don't swing the arms too far to the inside when getting in this position; see the "Golf Pro Lesson Timing and Tempo update" and use the "momentum Toss" method for getting your arms on plane in the backswing; see also "golf Pro lesson swing Plane" and Perpetual motion drill" videos;

    Shawn

  • At 5.30 you talk about coming over the top by changing the spine angle on the way down. How would you stop this? Also where is you weight when your about half way down on your downswing??

  • OK; BIG IMPORTANT QUESTION!!

    YOUR PERCEPTION OF WHERE THE TARGET IS LOCATED IS THE PROBLEM; I WILL HAVE A FANTASTIC DVD ON THIS VERY SOON and in the meantime look at the following videos: "Golf Pro lesson Be a solid Ball striker" and "Tilted Spiral" part 1, 2 and 3 especially 3! Shawn

  • Hi shawn. I was wondering if you had any videos on explaining in detail how the club gets properly released. I know it happens automatically with centri.. force but I keep holding on to the club through impact. Almost " to connected" through impact .. if that makes sense..

    Thanks , I like your approach to teaching.

  • I love this "Braced Tilt" video. The concepts shown here are so vital to obtaining crisp contact. The "Tilted Spiral" videos are a nice compliment to this one. Or, for the ULTIMATE reference get Shawn's DVD. It is unbelievable!

    Dan

  • Very well said! Tilted Spiral part 1, 2 and 3 are huge for getting the feel of the downswing; they are the natural progression of the one leg drill that will lead you to the right feel in the downswing; I am working on a new updated DVD which will have a special section on "Proper targeting" which is the biggest stumbling block and causes 99% of over the top swings. Shawn

  • Please keep me updated on when your new DVD will be available. I want to be the first to own it!

    Dan H.

  • Thanks Dan; will do!

    Shawn

  • shawn...I like your teaching style....I'm from Spain and sadly I discovered golf in my 20's....I wish I lived in Ontario so you could make me a pro. If I'm ever there, I will look you up!

  • Thanks for your reply.

    What are your thoughts about presetting the pronation of the left arm and not the wrists at address. I think this is key to prevent overswinging and helps keep the left arm straight like yourself and maybe Ernie Els.

    Rhys

  • Have a look at the "Bridging flat wrist with hinged wrists" video; it will shed all the light on this left wrist flat at impact business. I discourage any kind of manipulation with the arms as it will take all the fluid motion out of the swing and worse, take your focus away from momentum to a target!

    Shawn

  • Hi Shawn

    Hogan's swing seems a little flat which looks like his arms follows his hip turn in a circular motion. Your swing looks like the hip turn is preset and the arms swings up having cleared the hip to allow room for the backswing.Have I got too techincal again?

    Best teacher the planet. You would make millions in the UK!!

    Rhys

  • Thanks Rhys! I will remember that! :)

    Hogan was shorter than me and had longer arms; it made his swing look much flatter but it was quite compatible with his body structure; also, as his clubs got longer, it made this effect even more dramatic;

    Thanks for your comment! Shawn

    Shawn

  • Hi Shawn

    I am hitting the ball straight with the two legs close together or shortening my stance. The contact is crisper and my balance has improved but my swing is still too long. Maybe I am too used to breaking the wrists at the top to get more whip in the swing!I am also using the hogan power move with the backside facing the target and then imagining I am hitting a bottle on the table with my left hip(lateral movement) to slot the arms naturally. Is this OK ? Rhys

  • hey shaun, great video. I will ut this into action next time i play. looks like it works.

  • Hey Steflanny! Thanks for the comment!

    It will take some time to adjust to the feel; here are some other titles to help with it: "tilted spiral" part 1, 2 and 3; "braced tilt part 2" and "Proper spine Tilt Angle"; then fantastic drills to practice this would be the "On the Slopes", "One Leg Drill" and the "Feet together drill"; all are on my website's "you tube Shawn" page. Shawn

  • Shaun, this is really good stuff. Now I know why I have always come into the ball too steep, and took too much divot. A little more tilt (maintained) has cleared out a few more cobwebs. Unfortunately, the spider still comes to visit from time to time.

  • Thanks for the comment!

    be sure to see the "golf Pro Lesson Tilted Spiral" part 1,2 and 3 as well as the Braced Tilt Part 2 and "proper spine tilt angle"

    Between these and my DVD you will have everything you need to keep the spiders away permanently! :) Shawn

  • Shawn,

    Great videos. I'm just starting to put a lot of your ideas into my swing. Had some good success today when I actually transferred ideas into the swing (a nice drive 290 down the middle-normally I'm about 250, and a crisp PW 110 instead of my normal 100). I'm having problems with my bracing on my front leg. I have problems planting my weight on my toes instead of through my ankles, which leads to a lot of shots towards the heel. Do you have any drills that might help?

    Thanks!

    Matt

  • Hey Matt!

    Go with the "One Leg Drill" then "One leg part 2"; then go to the "tilted Spiral" videos part 1 to 3. I will have a couple more videos coming online tomorrow to help too; One recent one called "Golf Pro Lesson How to clear the hips" is also very good and worth watching! Thanks for the nice comment and question! Shawn

  • Hi Shawn

    Best teacher on the planet. I have changed my swing more times that anyone.I've tried flat swing, leadbetter early wrist break, stack and tilt(Ben Hogan, in to out,flicking the wrists into impact,out to inn Freddie Couples style...the works and I am able to play single figures with all of them but with no consistency.I would shoot 89 in the morning and 71 in the afternoon!! However, since following your swing tips(I'm trying to stick to it)my irons I crisper.

    Kind regards

    Rhys (UK)

  • Hey Rhys! Thanks for that nice comment!

    I have been where you were brother! This is a very different state of mind that will allow you to let your central nervous system react to the feel you are looking for to a target you are looking to match that feel to. Mechanics free playing, it is very liberating and is the only way to play!

    Shawn

  • Shawn, I went out today and specifically worked on my posture and tilt as you recommended. I hit long irons like I had never, ever hit long irons before! I received your DVD's yesterday and am half way through the first DVD. I name you instructor of the century! Keep up the great work! George

  • Thanks very much George! I am glad you are having a blast! I like that title too! :)

    Shawn

  • just so you all no it's not called lag i forget what it is called but it's not lag

  • Actually, as a 9-year golfer, (started when I was 4 years old), I've noticed that playing on a range mat is different from actually applying it in a golf course. I'm not to sure with details, but it feels a lot different than on the course.

  • hi shaun could u go on my user and see what im doing wrong in my golf swing!!! i feel if i have to stop in my backswing because i may overswing?? so could u please check out my video!!! thanks!

  • is it ok to move your head?

  • The head can turn in it's own axis; but it should not move around; think about it as the top of your "swing set" where the chains of the swing come down from; if the top stay in place but pivots, the kid on the swing can go back and through the same spot...let the top move and the kid is in for the ride of his life and the bottom is now very unpredictable...:) Have a look at the "Head steady" and "Eye Ball" videos as well as the "No bones about it" to see how the engine works! Thanks, Shawn

  • I like how you do as I call it and ignition start by bending your right knee at the ball. However I dont see why to do it could you explain?

  • Hey Hoyster! OOOOOOO you are missing a big piece of the puzzle!! Watch the "Takeaway and Starting the swing", "Golf Swing medicine" and "Momentum Toss" part 1 and 2. All are on my "you Tube Shawn" page of my website; Thanks for the question and enjoy those; you will see it in many players on tour like Vijay...Shawn

  • hi shawn,as u said that the right shoulder is lower that left as right hand is under the left hand and I have felt my left pelvis is a bit higher than right pelvis due to my spin tilt away from target, Do I still need to "braced tilt" more intentionally? THanks!

  • Very good!

    You just want to make sure that this tilt of the spine is braced AGAINST the left and not ON TOP of the left or too much on the right side where the left foot would feel loose...Check out the "Tilted Spirale" video for an update on this one; Thanks for the question! Shawn

  • hi shawn, on the weekend sth. happened: went to the range and the pro came to me watching swinging. first i was afraid in cause of the setup you described and expected some critical words. the first two balls were horrible! but the third was fine. very good grip he told me and then good swing!! but he asked me for my weight distribution. he said that i had to much weight on the front foot. then tried with more weight on the back foot at the backswing and now i hit the ball better than ever! next

  • so shawn i have to say again: THANK YOU FOR YOUR ADVICE!!!!!

    if i were in canada i would take some lessons. but i can work with your dvd and your online lessons. an then go to the homepro to check it everything is in balance.

    so again: THANK YOU!!

  • Thanks for your great comments!

    Shawn

  • Hey Shawn...is your "braced tilt" the same thing as the "pre-turn" you write about in your articles?

  • Yes! You Bet!

    You will see "Braced Tilt part 2" and "Proper spine tilt angle" in the set up section of my "you Tube Shawn" page of my website (along with all the other 120 plus videos)

    Thanks for the question! Shawn

  • hi 812 after my second yr golfing with my wilson top notch blades and wooden driver i had a 6 handicap ......... then lost a few clubs so upgraded to newer clubs .... ooooppsss now my handicap is about 14 with far less distance .. so i was wondering just the opposite

  • Hi Shawn! Your backswing looks steep and layed off at the top. Is this an illusion, is this real and is this ok. It's obviously ok for you because you spank the ball well. I have been told to bring the club back more to the inside. I don't know if this is a compensation move, or sound swing form. Could you shed some light on this for me? I could ask you questions all day...I'll do that when we have some cigars and a great bottle of Cognac!

    Thanks

  • Hey 62! Sorry about the late reply; tiz the busy season...:)

    It is a move I make in my practice swing to continue to prevent me from getting too far across the line; I am usually down the line to slightly across...The Braced Tilt will get you to come naturally to the inside without manipulation; have a look at my "Hooks and Slices" video and pay particular attention to the Soccer kick analogy...You will find all my vids on my website's "You Tube Shawn" page...

    All the best!

    Shawn

  • after studying your DVD and from this youtube, ..i need to press 'reset button' on all my few years of swing and start it all over again.

    the most difficult part for me to create is 'skipping the stone' one. but once i got it,..(was skeptical whether your technique is possible) ..wow man, never thought before that i can send 9 iron to 140-150 meter.

    most will slightly draw. how to make it straight?

    thanks for rescueing me from shank, fat, topping etc etc.

    poji, Malaysia

  • Hi Fauzi and thanks for the kind words; the curve on the ball comes from a slightly closed face...but not sure you want to change that slight draw because this is the ball flight most golfers want to achieve! :)

    The Hooks and Slices" video will get you the info you need to work the ball from both sides to completely understand...Shawn

  • yes.. of course nice to see the ball compressed well n curving like that.

  • Hey Shawn I just ordered your DVD. Great videos man.

  • Shawn, you mentioned the lifting of your arms...is this a single plane golf swing or more upright two plane golf swing. To me it looks like the latter?

    Thx,

    Jeff

  • Hi Jeff; thanks for your question;

    It is THE PLANE needed to just let the club and arms fall through the ball and towards the target without manipulation or steering; Have a look at my "swing Plane" video as well as my "Arms Falling" video;

    All my videos are on my "You Tube Shawn" page of my website;

    Shawn

  • What kinda irons you got, Shawn?

  • Titleist 695 MBs...razor blades! "that's not a knife! This is a knife!' :)

    Shawn

  • I had just gotten Nike Forged Blades, myself. Not used to them yet. Their about an inch and a half longer than my older clubs. Turns out my older clubs were juniors :p

  • Only a few months now, I've been playing the new Titleist Z*M MB's--they're much the same as the 695's. They're custom fitted to my swing and I play them very well. Nonetheless, my playing partners all believe that no one should play blades accept for the professionals they see on t.v. To add to this, it was even a real hassle trying to convince Golf Galaxy store employees to sell them to me. Anyway, I would like to how golfer learned to play before such a thing as cavity backs?

  • 30 years ago, all there was on the market were forged blades!! It did not prevent people from playing at all! Good for you for getting them; your swing will thank you for it;

    Shawn

  • Hey Shawn,I am left handed but my dominant arm is my right. Should I try to use my left hand as the power arm (to skip the rock) or my right arm? Thanks.

  • You will naturally feel the need to use your dominant arm;

    Go to my "Golf Pro Lesson Right or Left" Video where I talk about the different analogies I use for dominant left vs right players. All my other vids are on the "You Tube Shawn" page of my website...Thanks for the question! Shawn

  • Hi shawn I live in the Uk and for the past year have aquired a chronic shank! every club in the bag. been to a couple of pga pros in uk but all they give me is drills like JUST swing from the inside or put a peice of wood just outside the ball (you know the ones!). when i video my own swing I notice my pelvis moves towards the ball near impact. do you think this could be my basic cause of a shank and do you have some good drills to get my hips working correctly.

  • Yes and Yes;

    Watch the "Hogan Power move" and the "hogan power Drill" videos to start; then move to the swing sequence and the sequence power drills; the "feet together drill" video is also awesome for this; all my vids are on my "you tube Shawn" page of my website;

    Thanks for the comment and question! Shawn

  • As a golf instructor, this video is extremely detrimental for the average golfer. 99% of recreational golfers hang back through impact and thus compensate by using their hands and wrist through impact. The set up you are teaching further aids to this dilemma.

  • I can understand your dilemma and how this sounds to you at first; after digesting it a bit and listening to it again, you will hear that it is imperative to counter balance the tilt and BRACE IT AGAINST THE LEFT SIDE (hence the title "Braced tilt"...have a look at the "Braced tilt Part 2" and the "proper spine tilt angle" videos and then let me know what you think...You will find all my videos on my "You Tube Shawn" page of my website...

    Thanks for the comment! Shawn

  • I had MAJOR problems hanging back, Shawn's teaching now has me on the right track. Have you watched all of his videos? A big part of his teaching is to "toss" (backswing), "fall" (brace on left side), and then swing through. This way, you are anchored on your left side WELLLL before you even start the downswing. This provides excellent balance, and with the proper grip, a nice descending, trapping of the ball, as opposed to the wrist flip.

  • I have tried your brace tilt. I have closed shoulders naturally and when I tried your little brace move, I feel like I am too closed. Would it be better to just tilt so my head is behind ball if my shoulders close naturally?

  • It sounds like you are on the right track;

    Check out the "proper spine tilt and the Braced tilt part 2" videos to make sure...they are on my website on the "you tube Shawn" page

    Thanks for the question and comment! Shawn

  • I think my closed shoulders cause me to shank when I take the club back with closed face. I have started to turn my hands immediately upon takeaway and find I hit the ball on the sweet spot with little effort thus longer shots. Does this make sense?

  • I have a strong feeling that this is a band aid to cover for another issue that you are unaware of; keep plugging because the comment you gave me under this one is very much on track! Shawn

  • Thank You. You have the best instructional videos I have ever seen and best of all free. I can only imagine how many golfers you are helping to include me. I really want to get in the 70s this year but the shanks have set me back a bit on that goal. I do feel that with your instruction and plenty of practice will help me get there.

    BTW...I used your fairway bunker tips the other day and WOW...What a feeling to not be intimidated by this type of haza

  • When I do the feet together drill, I hit the ball great. When I get in normal stance, I shank. I think it is in my feet and stance. I have tried to keep weight on heels but lose power. I hope the open stance will get me there. I just bought your DVD. I can't wait to watch it.

  • I think something has clicked watching this video again. I setup with a slight open stance for a slight fade on a dogleg right hole. I flew longer than I have ever hit with 3 wood to the sandtrap thru the fairway. I believe my closed shoulders give me a tendency for closed stance. I think if I open my stance and brace and tilt, it will appear my club is slightly open but in fact is setup for maximum flight.

    Do you have higher elevation? 190 with a 7 iron? That is huge.

  • This is the right way to set up! Many of my students have a tendency to set up with the feet too closed and they block themselves right out of the shot and have no chance; the shank is a common result; Kudos to you for figuring this out!! Shawn

  • Elevation there isn't very high. It looks quite moist outside that day. Water vapour is less dense than dry air, with significant humidity the ball will fly further because of it.

  • I opened the stance and tilted back this weekend. I was able to strengthen my grip like I like it and set my back swing easier. I was hitting the ball well and consistent (No more shanks). My swing tempo was better as well. I am still hitting 7 iron only 145 to 150 yards. I would like to get more power. I am concentrating on hitting thru the ball to a full follow thru. I know the stronger grip allows me to play it back a little more but what should I concentrate on?

  • Hi Shawn, your video lessons are great. I'm going to have to get your DVD. One thing I noticed is that your swing is much more upright than mine. I feel like I can acheive your position at the top with the shorter to mid irons, but with the longer clubs and the driver it feels uncomfortable. Do you think shortening my clubs would help at all. I'm 5 ft 6 in and I play standard length irons, 44 inch driver and 43 inch 3 wood. I've been fitted by a professional.

  • Another great video! Could you please emphasize where the butt of the club should be positioned at address (i.e. left of the bellybutton vs. right of the bellybutton)? Is the butt of the club positoned differently for irons vs. a driver? I heard someone say that for a driver the butt of the club at address should be pointing slightly right of your bellybutton (for a right handed golfer). Hope my questions aren't too confusing.

  • inside meaning it feels like my club is not following the line of the shaft and going outside of that line instead...i think im hitting the ball better, but i dont think it's really right

  • You want to feel like you are tossing the arms and club away with the turn of the body; like in the "Takeaway and starting the swing" video; feel a nice width with arms away from the body...

  • Hi shawn, I just ordered your DVD and I can't wait to see it!!! anyways, when I do the proper spine tilt and braced tilt, I feel like I'm pulling the club too inside. it's not like my arms are just moving but it just feels too inside. Is it supposed to kinda feel like the clubs moving inside or should it not? Thanks for your help!

  • shawn,

    1. at address, what is the weight distribution like on both feet. 60 - 40 favouring the lead foot or 50 - 50?

    2. at the top of backswing, should i feel centred (50-50) or a slight more weight on the back foot?

  • Great questions Azrul!

    You want to feel as though your head is being supported by your left leg at all times...the weight of the arms going into the backswing will temporarily bring the weight ratio to 70% back foot and then return immediately to the left side and build to 95% plus in the finish...Feels like 60% in the left side to start...Other vids to watch are "Golf Pro Lesson Downswing weightshift" and "Hockey Golf" and "one leg back to 2 High and Low shots";

    Shawn

  • thanks for the prompt answer Shawn! will put it into practice this evening :)

  • Shawn, it looks like you are delivering your power to the ball with you right hand/arm. When hit with my right hand I have a tendency to hit the ball fat.

  • That is because your focus is not THROUGH THE BALL (Golf Pro Lesson Through the ball) and your target is the ball; this will happen regularly if this is the case...also watch the "Catapult Power" video as well as the "feet together drill" and the "one leg drill" to make sure you are centered in the backswing; all are on my "you tube Shawn" page of my website at shawnclementgolf dot com

    Thanks for the comment! Shawn

  • Go about it the way I do with the "Swing Sequence" and the "Sequence Power Drills" allowing the left heel to come off the ground but without shifting the center of your swing...the butt stays over the left heel so that planting it becomes a formality; I am uploading something right now to deepen this understanding of shift of pressure. Shawn

  • hi shawn,

    tried your braced tilt and it was really really great. one thing though, I seem to hit the ball very high and lost quite a bit of distance. i have a feeling that I am not doing it right. hmmm...

  • Hey Dillazag!

    This is why I came out with "Golf Pro Lesson Braced Tilt Part 2"! You will immediately see and feel the difference once you do it! By the way, all my videos can be seen from my "You Tube Shawn" page of my website at shawnclementgolf dot com...

    Shawn

  • Hi Shawn, I have been working my way through your video tutorials. You have a really relaxed looking swing!! Would you say that it is a "Stack and Tilt" swing?

    Regards,

    Tim

  • Hi Tim;

    Thanks for the kind words and comment; the words stack and tilt apply very much to the techniques I teach, but it is not to be confused with the "Stack and Tilt" technique you saw in Golf Digest last year...

    Don't miss braced tilt part 2! Shawn

  • Like always, this is a great video Shawn, I love your videos and loved your DVD, I had learned more about my swing by watching your DVD than I had in over a year of training. My question is though, do you do the Tily with the Driver? It seems when I tilt with a Driver Im way off target! Thanks!

  • Hi Jerais and thanks for the comment and kind words;

    Yes the tilt is most important with the driver but do not overdo it; check the "Braced Tilt Part 2" and the "Great Driver Tip" videos from the "You Tube Shawn" page of my website and to make sure you have the correct distance from the ball with the driver, check the "set Up for Taut arms" and "taut arms" videos;

    Let me know how you do!

    Shawn

  • Hellow Shawn, Your YouTube Vids are fascinating!

    I come back to your vids time to time when ever I have a problems.

    One question I had always wanted to ask.

    How tilted should you be (when in address)?

    How to check you are not tilted too much, or not tilting enough? Kane from Singapore

  • Great question!

    If you go to my website and see the Blog page; you will see the watchdog blog for Golf Digest March 08 with David Leadbetter's article on crisp irons and we talk about this there...Thanks again! Shawn

  • Shawn Excellent as ALWAYS. The tilt is one of the most under taught concepts I know. So instead of asking WHY....let me ask you this.

    What goes wrong when there is no tilt and the shoulder (line) is parallel to the ground?

    Thanks again............NZ

  • Hey NZ great question!

    I made a video discussing this very subject; you will find it in my "Watchdog Blog" on my website blog from this month's golf digest article from David Leadbetter...So go to my website and click on my blog page and be patient for it to load up...I am trying to find a way to reduce the size on these videos without sacrificing too much image quality...

    Shawn

  • This wonderful biomechanically correct advice. Look at how well he gets his right shoulder downplane, and how his right arm is in the perfect Hoganesque pitch position. Perfect body mechanics. The only problem novice could have is in taking the club to far inside. I would use more of a right forearm pickup to set the club perfectly on plane in the takeaway. Good instruction!

  • Thanks very much!

    Shawn

  • Thank you for these video's. They have helped my game a whole lot

  • continued.... If there is a no tilt behind the ball then there are 2 possible problems!! 1. The head needs to be placed behind the ball.2. The ball needs to be moved up further in the stance. Anyway perhaps a demonstration video would help clear up the situation. look for it soon. What ever works for you though!! Thanks for sharing the suggestion!

  • Im sorry but this is the worst golf tip ever! Do not listen to this advice. Ur tilt is wrong. It forces the clubface to aim right of the target and get the club going to far to the inside on the way back!! Also, if you look at the best players in the world.... U will not see their left forearm at address from a behind the ball view!!

  • Well hi there Stubo and thanks for your comment! For someone seeing this for the first time, it has obviously come as a shock to you. To help enlighten your perception, please have a look at the following videos on my website on the "you tube Shawn" page: "Proper Spine tilt", "Through the ball", "One Leg Drill", then go skip some stones at the local pond and make the connection to the golf swing...I wish I was still 23...but with this knowledge of course! :)

  • u idiot. watch all this guys vids, he knows what he is on about

  • Listen playing good golf is not easy. There have been many methods employed by some of the best players in the world. However i have found that sticking to classic/basic fundamentals gives the learner the best chance of improving. I cant help but notice that you have a lost alot of width(power leak). Ultimately though you miss the point. When u place the hands on the club(right below left) the right shoulder automatically drops and the spine tilts( arms are the same length afterall!

  • hi shawn is your swing arc getting shorter and if so does that aplly to the driver and woods also ?

  • Hi and thanks for your comment! I would like to think that it is getting wider, especially at 3 and 9 o'clock; again, the key here is feeling that you have plenty of range of motion in the backswing to whip the club through with authority and little effort.

    Shawn

  • Great video thoroughly explained through cause and effect. The concept of the braced left leg through impact is one which continues to help my golf, and I will now check my head position through impact. Thankyou

  • Hi Shawn. Had my two first rounds of golf and in the topic of braced tilt I noticed something. I have not been able to hit my driver/woods solid before but my Iron game has been okay.

    I just tried tilting away from the ball with the driver and got 5 straight shots in return.

    Question is, can me not tilting enough and as a result not moving towards the target with my lower body be a cause for pulling shots, inconsistent release etc?

  • Yes; just like skipping stones or hammering nails into a door frame; if you don't have the tilt, your right elbow cannot lead and get you through the ball; other videos that will help are "Proper spine tilt", "Leverage power", "Hogan Power Move and Drill", "Fine Tuning the Best drill", "Swing Sequence" and "sequence power drills"...all on my website on the "You Tube Shawn" page

  • Hi Shawn, When I make the tilt you shown I tend to slice the ball and lost distance. I got a normal grip. I think the club face is open at impact cause by the tilt. When I go back to my normal set up the ball went straight. RB

  • Yes; When you tilt away from the target, you need to watch for 2 things: Make sure you are braced against the left side where you "Feel" 60% of weight on the left and 40% on the right. Next, you will realize your club face is probably too open and you will need to square it; it will "Seem closed" but if the ball flies straight you know that is not the case. Thanks for your great comment! Shawn

  • shawn can you tell me what section the arm unit is in ?

  • The arm motion video is towards the bottom of the page...probably 15th from the bottom;

    Shawn

  • hi shawn that was a good lesson ty , my biggest problem is mantaining a flat left wrist when i come to impact i seem to get a gap betwwen my grip in the backswing but have a good grip and cannot correct the problem do you have any suggestions i can try . ty

  • Hi Ty!

    Your arm unit is probably coming apart;

    Go to my Website at shawnclementgolf dot com and watch the following vids: "Arm Motion", "Arms in Front of Body", "Chicken wing across the line"...Then make sure your arms are not the ones starting the back swing... Watch the "Takeaway and Starting the swing video" Shawn

  • Shawn how do you know how much to tilt? I tried it on the driving range, I felt as if I was hitting it fat because I was behind the ball. It did work well with a driver since I stayed well behind the ball

  • You must feel over the ball with the chest ("Golf Pro Lesson Don't Keep the Head Down 1 and 2")and go to the You Tube Analogies page of my website at shawnclementgolf dot com and see the one about the martial artist breaking his stack of bricks...In the Watchdog blog section, check out the article on tilt by Mike McGetrick from Golf Digest too...Shawn

  • You said wieght goes from inside of right foot to inside of left. Does it stay on inside of left or does it roll to the outside. I Always went directly to outside maybe thats why I'm always losing my balance. I really enjoy your videos and are very helpful. Thanks alot. Tom

  • Hi Tom; Thanks for your comment;

    It stays on the inside of the left through impact and then momentum pulls the body up and on top of the left foot in the finish;

    If your foot is rolled slightly to the outside that's OK as long as you are stacked and have no strain on your left ankle, knee or hip;

    Shawn

  • You said your 7 iron is going farther than your normal 7 iron..i watched all your videos(probably 10 time each :)) and in this one, it looks like your tilt is more pronounced...probably because that is what this lesson is about, maybe that is why ur killing it ??

  • Shawn, I was having the same problem as YangLYY. Thanks for the reference--"Golf Pro Lesson on the slopes." Now I no how to get that inner pressure on the inside of my left foot and ankle. This was just another key area that I was struggling with.

  • hey shawn..

    after the spine tilted.. wil there be more weight on the right foot (for a right hander)..? i'm hitting the ball fat.. n i cant shift my weight properly that way.. please help..

  • No; the weight should be 50/50 and in fact, in your mind it will feel more in the left;

    Practice the downhill shot in "Golf Pro Lesson on the slopes" and watch you don't bring your arms too much to the inside on the backswing; Keep the arm swing wide and try the 2 drills in the new video I just uploaded "Golf Pro Lesson Power Drills"

    Shawn

  • ok thanks.

  • ive said it again lol. i was meant to say right foot

  • No Problem...:) Yes, the head stays inside the right foot; and it is especially important with the driver!

    All the best, Shawn
