sometimes, if its something you really wanna do, you just gotta bite the bullet and ask someone whos in charge of arranging powwows in ur area how you can go about this. Im not a dancer but I sure enjoy going to Powwows though. If its something that YOU wanna do, then forget what other ppl are saying and just start practicing nd maybe others will follow ur lead as well

I don't know what to tell you. I've never seen a male jingle dancer. The above clip is stated as a switch dance, so it's just a specialty exhibition. Do you know the history of the dress? Maybe that will give you the answer.

I think it's a common assumption because at most powwows, it's announced as men's or men's junior grass. This is my favorite dance and I've toyed with the idea of going from jingle to grass, but have never done it.

Hey I grass dance for reals. I just don't do it for fun in a switch dance. It is an old school style. But who ever said it was for men only? It has to do with the dancers spirt. There are two kinds of grass dancers... 1.The type who controls the grass, who would prepare the dance arena in the old way by stoping the grass down flat. 2. One who embodies the grass, who becomes the grass.

It has nothing to do with gender, it's a spiritual thing.

the regalia isnt 2 heavy. cuz its mostly yarn or ribbon and cloth..the thing that gets heavy is the bead work..so i guess it depends on how much bead work you have on your stuff

If you go to the north, you will see sometimes woman dance grass right along with the men. I do not know if it has always been this way or if this is a recent occurence (since 80's maybe?)

I agree with you that traditions can evolve and they do evolve, look at the jingle dress, it used to be a real simple dance and now all the fancy footwork has been added to it and at first it was not accepted at some powwows but now its the norm.

grass dancing was originally done to flatten an area to set up a temporary camp, as natives tended to move about..males did it predominately but women did help at times..a pragmatic approach..women actually had a lot of power in certain areas in native culture that males are/were excluded from..so it works both ways..i say let the guys do the grass flattening and i'll gather...
