Nirvana is a complete different band, the two have a complete different fanbase. I think however, that Joy Division has a higher level of composing, Nirvana is more simple. They both we're pioneers within their genre, But the influence of Joy Division on modern artist is stronger than nirvana's, because new wave/post punk revival is very populair these days. Joy Division doesn't have it's own 'smells like teen spirit', but I can hear their style daily in bands like editors, interpol, etc. etc.

Far as I know Ian was not much of a musician. He was more of a poet. I think there is a similarity between the two men to certain extent.
