With guitarists i'm immediately critical wether they have work ethic or are shedding the image of "talen". If they layer there guitars to me is a no-no,if they use 1 note dual guitar arps is a no-no to me, if they chug throughout the whole song is a no-no to me.I take there picking, sweeping patterns (if they sweep at all), there use of the cage system (if any), their usage of alot of unorthodox techniques, slapping, hybrid picking, economy picking. But you can't tell alot of that by music vids.

As I Lay Dying is not Grindcore, but Metalcore; and The Red chord is not Metalcore but a mixture of grindcore and death metal and hardcore. It is when a band is hard to put in these categories that we can see their originality.

I wouldn't call The Red Chord pure grindcore, but they definitely take influence from it. They kinda fit in with bands like Cattle Decapitation and Cephalic Carnage who are in that grey area between death metal and grindcore. These guys also have 90's hardcore influences (Earth Crisis, Converge), so I guess you could call them "metalcore" but not really metalcore as it is today. I'd call em deathgrind, it makes sense and the subgenre name has a cool sound to it. Deathgrind just sounds brutal.
