Alex Salmond's views and objectives really don't have any substance at all. I truly believe he has one (quite shallow) aim alone, which is to simply achieve what so many better/greater men before him have tried and failed to do!
Does he really care about the wider issue of whether this is in Scotland's (or in fact Britain's) best interest or is he merely on some selfish crusade in an attempt to go down in history as the man who finally broke up the union?
Can't wait for Scottish independence. I've had ambitions for it all of my life. Word of warning to the SNP... stop trying for a Scottish vote on Scottish independence, it won't work, as the Jocks aren't stupid enough not to know which side their bread's buttered on and that butter's County Life (English Butter) SNP, campaign for an English vote on Scottish indepencence, as we'll dump you faster than a rabid dog.
@1lordme That is exactly my view of the SNP. They would have my vote but they have mutated into some kind of weird uber-liberal cooperative. I was an SNP supporter for years but this full-on "immigration is good" initiative, along with their intent to chain us to the Titanic (i.e. the Euro) has finished them for me. How can they say they are a nationalist party, putting the interests of their own people first, when they broadcast their intent to flood the country with cheap foreign labour?
Come on people, OPEN YOUR EYES ! Why on earth would a conservative PM who only has 1 MP in Scotland, ONE !, want a country as he and many English people say is poor and leeches off England to stay in the UK? Surely it's in his parties and the rest of the UK's interest that Scotland leaves the UK??? OIL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is the ONLY reason why the British Government wants to hold onto Scotland. It is a fact !
As an Englishman, I fully support Scots independence, because the English taxpayer will no longer have to bale out the Scots economy to the tune of £130 billion a year. However, Scotland is too small an entity to be economically viable on its own. Also the Scots will no longer be able to use the pound sterling and will have to adopt the weak and shaky euro. My fear is therefore that millions of Scots will head south of the border desperately looking for work and straining the English economy.
@glenpovey Then please tell me why an English Conservative Prime Minister is so against independence for Scotland if all we do is take money from England? Surely with only one tory MP in Scotland, it is in David Cameron's best interest to be supportive of Scots independence? Can you answer that for me please?
@N330AA I'm not stupid.... i am asking WHY do they want to preserve the union? What benefit is Scotland to the Conservatives or the rest of the UK? All i seem to hear from down south is how they all seem to fund me with their taxes.
@glasgow1234 Within the context of the UK you are subsidised because you get above average public spending per head for no apparent reason. From an individual country's point of view you are not. We'd both lose out with independence though. The divorce would be very costly and messy for starters and no PM wants to be dealing with that shit.
@N330AA You see, i and many Scots believe we would be better off as an independent country. People in England complain that they seems to be funding Scotland which to me should mean they are supportive of us raising and spending our own money but the reply is usually " but you would fail, you are too poor ".I still don't see a valid reason as to why DC wants Scotland in the union? You think just because it will be messy? He couldn't care less about Scotland! It's our oil he is after!
@glasgow1234 I see no evidence that he doesn't care about Scotland - i think you are just being emotional. The oil is obviously a plus point but it's still a tiny contributor to the UK treasury and even if there was no oil you're mad to think he'd want to get rid of Scotland. Does he want to get rid of Wales? No PM comes in with the idea of making his country considerably smaller.
I don't think Scotland would fail at all. I don't see it being better off though.
@glasgow1234 As an English Tory..i couldn't agree more...i don't want Scotland to leave us.....but it would give the the Tories a bigger representation in the English Parliament ! maybe he is just an old softie at heart
@glenpovey As a scotsman i also welcome independence, because i will no longer have to live under a tory government that has been voted into power by english voters, and i will no longer have to listen to some english people NOT ALL, telling us how we are subsidised by english tax payers and how scots couldnt run there own country, and couldnt survive on its own, even though they did for over 800 years. Beware of false knowledge my southern friend, it is more dangerous than ignorance!
@Upeter2 Really? What currency will Scotland use? What percentage of the debt will scotland take IT WILL NOT BE 9% because ENGLAND bailed out the Royal Bank Of Scotland.
If Scotland pulls out of the UK it will have to go into the Euro. So basically you will pull out and surrender your financial independence to Europe... Yea good idea.. Mr Salmond is an IDIOT for making people feel that there is a difference from being Scottish and English, we all live on the same island.
@glenpovey Well, Glen (nice Gaelic name there), it looks like you are among the ranks of those down south who harbour an irrational animosity towards us. Why the hysteria? If we are such a liability, then celebrate the possibility of our departure from the union. As for your worries over Scots going to England, we'll keep them here if you take back the chinless-wonder, economic migrant settlers who infest the Highlands, pushing property prices up and forming bloody useless committees.
Salmond said that Scots would prefer home rule to Tory rule. I live in Scotland and I have to tell you Alex, I would prefer rule by Bungle and Zippy than the Conservatives.
This referendum will be held by the scottish government and the scottish people and not bullied by the tories or westminster into taking it early to suit pro-unionist throughout!!!! Cameron would best serve his time and take it and go and take some tips in acting as a politician in more convincing role by watching the margret thatcher movie as meryl streep is more convincing as a politician that thatcher ever was!!!!
Whether the coming referendum passes or fails the question will always be there. There will always be a large percentage of that country which is opposed to London rule (Just look at the comments in all the Scottish independence videos) , with an even larger percentage holding no loyalty to London for any reasons other than fear of economic change.
That's a weak union.
Loyalty to the head of state of the union and the monarchy in general in Scotland is also pretty damn low. Culturally divided.
@ArmchairRebel1 Aww that's very sweet gifting Northern England to Scotland, but hadn't you better consult the people living there first? Maybe they want to remain English.
England has been robbed by Scottland, not the other way around. Scottland started this union, and Scotland didnt allow England a parliment, so that means Scotland, Wales and N.Ireland all decide on laws and policies in England, without English involvment.
And the EU is failing, if Scotland wants to join a sinking boat, i say let them.
Scotland will not not become independent. They will become another state of the EU were they will make 75% of there laws and probably make them all in a couple years time.
a scarey man, im sure Scotland would be great independantly, but if if if, and it would would never happen their financies failed, England would have to bail them out .if only for our National Defences , as Russia could move in for instance...mmm Ireland we have borrowed and lent to them at our very cheap intrest rates as they are actually insolvent, ...
Salmond is a lier, he supposedly wants Scotland independant, yet he plans to either join the EU or become an effectove bitch of the EU, and the Scottish people will regret it.
@mwillis1000 I doubt that very much. Your argument is basically better the devil you know and we have been robbed by England for centuries - Scotland is and always was a more European Nation than England and our resources are as good as any other country within the EU for our size. We'd be a decent player in the EU and I for one don't understand why we didn't ditch London a lot sooner.
@mwillis1000 And Scotland, as part of the UK, is not a member of the EU at the moment? Funny, no-one told me. What's all that palava about at Passport Control then, when you fly back into the country about then?
