Riding is NOT just sitting there, all of our bodies muscles are working when we are riding, and we need to learn when to use what muscle and when not to. We train ourselves to constantly be focused on a lot of things at once, including when to use a certain muscle. As equestrians we need an artistic ability to make something so hard look effortless, Think about it. The thing controling a 1000lb+ animal under us is

Most people wouldn't believe us if we told them, but we need the stamina of a hockey player. And we need the confidence and braveness of one as well, because in this sport we don't have time to be scared or in-confident. In fact, fear and disbelief are our worst enemies, these are the things that will
more than likely leave us sitting on the ground with dirt in our mouths, or worse badly injured. Horses pick up on emotions extremely well, and they feed off of the emotions. Keeping your cool and staying completely relaxed while Using every single muscle in your body, having your mind multi task probably more than it would in any other sport, while staying in complete balance with a 1000lb + animal. It may look easy
But that is only because that is the sport, its what equestrians are. We adjust to all of this, we try to perfect it and make it look like we are doing a flowing gymnastics routine, but after a good lesson or any specific discipline, i guarantee that the rider will be sweating just as much as the horse he/she is sitting on.
So, if anyone ever says "riding is not hard, you just sit there" Hook them up with a lesson and see what they have to say after an hour of riding.
