  • I miss this. I've kind of moved past my goth phase, but coming back and listening to Sisters, Bauhaus, and others, I realize I really miss it all.

  • Andrew Eldrich rocked than will rock FOREVER!!!

  • why don't we have more bands like them today???

  • @petrokamenias

there is bands like this today, but this type of music has and never will be mainstream, just look for it its there

  • C plus que du son miss tu peux me joindre at dead57180@gmail.com personne connaît ici france

  • belle musice

  • it's just the end ...

  • :28 that guy is ascending to heaven! lol

  • dark tune. I just love it. I wish I was there.

  • how can this have any dislikes? Always a good one to practice getting your voice as low as possible

  • @SuperVoodooguru 22 people think this is a Nouvelle Vague original

  • one of the most badass proformences of my life love them so much

  • 2 bands have influenced my state of life: The beatles and the sisters of mercy.

  • best versions of Marian and No time to cry

  • so faltava aqui body electric que segundo dizem foi escrita por o andrew eldrich sob inspiraçao vudu.

  • ...and 'No Time To Cry' is so good, after 'Marian'.

  • Fantastic guitar work.

  • @vinylsurrender

Wayne and Gary were great! (But, just Wayne here.)

  • This is the top of the music.

  • i love this song so much

  • My dad was at this Gig. Yeh, he's cool

  • I would've like to see one more album from the "original" lineup (w/ Gary sticking around). But I wonder if we would have gotten Floodland, which was way different but equally as brilliant. We'll never know.

  • I love Goth Rock !

  • The best song ever made

    watch: youtube.com/watch?v=n8i8pP3lcAU

  • I wish 'Marian' would just keep on ticking away for another few minutes, but when No Time To Cry comes on it's even better. I love this album - First And Last And Always, 1985, from start to finish.

  • MARIAN IS THE BEST MAIN CLIP

  • Well... I haven't said any of the two should be considered better or worse. I just like both. I can't believe you're trying to make me look like a troll that loves flame wars. I've only highlighted some facts in order to argue about inspiration. What's wrong with this? If you don't like the facts, it's your problem. People can read what I've written and make up their own mind.

  • jaaaah genau!!!!!!^^ sisters of mercy,JOY DIVISION,the mission,the fields of nephilim,bauhaus,christian death,anne clark..sooooooo genialer sound!!!!! bury me deep^^ ..amazing!!!!death in june,sol invictus and current93=>sad depressiv songs make strong!!!!r.i.p IAN CURTIS!!!

  • Great Boris Karloff vibe! Nothing like classic goth-rock. Folks today don't even know what goth is. On a long enough timeline they'll call van halen goth at this rate.

  • @zzGRENDELzz Agreed, you've got 'Emo', call it 'Emo', it is not goth, not to us puritanical Gothguards. If a song has no bats, coffins, cobwebs, fangs, Bowie references, sexy pale ladies, skulls etc. it is not a gothic song...

  • @zzGRENDELzz Don´t generalize, I´m 16 and I know and love goth-rock and I only regret I haven´t been around in London in 80´s :D

  • @CathalinaCFC - the precious few who may know the difference don't make up for the thousands shopping in Hot Topic who don't.

I'm 42 and if I've learned one thing it's that generalisations are what separate us from the baboons who can't tell shit from shinola... or Gothic Rock from Ozzy.

  • @zzGRENDELzz In general you´re right, I was kidding :) In my homeland majority of people think that goths a) listen to metal b) are suicidal kids trying to get attention c) are satanists... And all that thanks to people like you mentioned, so i know what you mean.

  • @depeched221184 La nuova età di mezzo è già in atto . tocca a voi l'onere e l'onore di traghettarla alpoi.

  • Bunch of wankers...

  • The best mormon band ever!

  • @poolsidenyc Wasn't it just Wayne Hussey who was a Mormon?

  • @vincedoomreaper88 You are probably right. My comment was a little on the sly with them being from Leeds and all. They were a one of a kind group back in the Hussey days. Loved em.

  • Amazing how this style of music is so unique for the few ones, the older I get the more I appriciate the sound and lyrics. One of the best bands ever! I used to travel with this music back in the younger days. In my forties now, still traveling except now with a destination.

  • great music.both tracks are great.notice:i ve been listening to bauhaus, joy division, sisters of mercy, the mission, fields of the nephilim for years.i dont get it when people try to compare or contrast different bands in order to claim one band is better than the other.each band is great,it s just a matter of perspective.same conflict thing goes for metalheads.i ve been listening to metal since the late 80s-early 90s. never understood the fight over different bands or different subgenres.

  • @scorpios814 Great comment... I could'nt have said it better myself. (n00w7re has been annoying me so much that I chose to remain silent.) The big Curve/Garbage battle is the one that always cracks me up. Superficial similarities between those two bands but thats about it. And I like both bands... No need to fight.

  • @Elgrandeshit Weren't Curve well gone when Garbage appeared? If not I'm well mistaken, not for the first time, like when I considered Bauhaus to be contempories of McFly.

  • @Spankabuttux Oh no... Curve's last album Gift was released in 2001. Curve has even commented favorably about Garbage and vice versa.

  • @Elgrandeshit I am humbled by your knowledge! But, ooh, you just said "has". A band is not a thing, aarrggghhhh!!! It's "have". Curve have commented, The Killers have done something or other, Hall and Oates have split up. Aaarrrgghhh!, Why do people adopt these ridiculous fake-cool phrases? Resist, everyone resist, don't be a sad sheep led by record companies! Say "have" and give The Man the bird. Again: aaaarrrggghhhh!!!

  • @scorpios814 I agree. I was just debating someone who kept calling Nosferatu a ''second rate sisters wannabe'', and while I see the inspiration in the band a bit, and completely disagree with elitism, I can somewhat understand why some people are like this. With such a powerful and captivating genre we're listening to, you can't help but have an immense pride for the music. As for me, I love all types of Goth rock, that can be from Nosferatu, to Fields of the Nephilim, to Vendemmian, etc.

  • @scorpios814

I despise the term genre, and subgenre is even worse !

  • @scorpios814

    Hi all

For me Joy Division has nothing to do with Sister of Mercy, Fields of etc....

    This is only my opinion!

    Cheers

  • Here's a link to support my claims: scathe,demon,co,uk\histgoth,htm

(add the w's at the beginning then replace , and \)

And here's the comparison that says all: "Heart and Soul" by Joy Division vs. "Body and Soul" by The Sisters of Mercy. Both musics look very different but you can't deny inspiration, not only in the title. Furthermore, Ian Curtis sang with his heart, while Andrew Eldritch sings with his body.

  • Another vfgood version of this is the Hellraiser Remix, here on the tube. This is a highly recommended listening for ur ears. So are some of the most underrated tunes by Sisters of Mercy incl. "Summer" and "We are the same Susanne". Enjoy the lives!

  • best live band ever!

  • more like it its shit now no culture!.

  • Sorry guys can someone tell me the date and place of this live performance? I've seen SOM 3 times and their performance at that times (1991, 1999 and 2005) was not so good.

  • @Cilha72

    1985 Royal Albert Hall London

  • @Elgrandeshit How on earth did you get this? I was at this performance, so thanks for the memories! A proper Ziggy moment.

  • @Cilha72 This is from 1985 for crying out loud. There was a VHS video called "Wake". this is a clip from it.

  • @Cilha72 Brussels, "Ancienne Belgique" I think, I was there. But the year ... ???

  • Comment removed

  • excelente cancion...

  • Classic Sisters. @pvcsister, looks like the Albert Hall recording (entitled 'Wake') - wore my VHS out, that did.

Listening to 'Floorshow' on acid changed my life... :P

  • When was this? I think I was there!

  • one the most powerfull ever live song ....

  • Comment removed

  • WOW - What an artifact, considering that SoM seems to be a spent force. (If I am proven wrong, it would be quite a pleasant surprise.) These are dark times and, one would think, classic goth music would fill the void. Heck, even the Cure and DM remain somewhat active/interested. I've heard that the environment for a SoM comeback is there but that Andy has unrealistic financial demands. Anyone care to report on that?

  • ¡Buenísimo, qué grandes!

  • Comment removed

  • Great song..........horribly compressed

  • the first time i ve seen then i had an orgasm

  • If only I'd been old enough to catch them live ... I love this song and I LOVE the Sisters!!!

  • @Aphrodizzle They play live regularly, including playing new, unreleased songs. I saw them in 2009 in Austria and they´re playing again in February. Have a look around the net for their gigs.

  • @andinoble Yeah, it's just Andrew Eldritch with random musicians, though. Plus, he never comes to the states. I'll keep an eye out for any dates. Thanks.

  • @SinisterLonging: Eldritch high? What makes you think that. All the songs are basically about being sober.

  • @eyeweiss I know first hand that he likes red wine, cigarettes and especially amphetamines :D But that was 20 years ago. He still likes cigarettes and red wine :D

  • @eyeweiss Amphetamine Logic, anyone? ;)

  • god i love sisters

  • @SinisterLonging Rose Kennedy was a sister of J.F.K. and Robert Kennedy. she had a mental illness and when shock treatment didnt work the parents had her lobotomized. she later died. A very sad and embarassing truth for one of Americas most influential families.

  • What was written on the walls of Borley Rectory again?

  • @66Templar Most famous of the hoax occurrences at Borley Rectory were the 'Marianne' writings. Originally scribbles by Marianne Foyster's adopted daughter, Adelaide, a visitor pointed out an arrangement of letters and suggested a 'ghost' was trying to spell Marianne's name. Marianne had a craving for attention and admiration and soon her name spelled in full appeared. Her husband then wrote "What do You want?" on the wall and so the correspondence with the 'entity' began with "Please help get".

  • Scooter sang a cover version of the song ' Marian' on the album 'Jumping all over the world' (2007) which is better than this one.

  • @DJshannen Haha, good Joke! Scooter better than Sisters... Scooter ain't better than noone!

  • @landolt64 I compared the songs, not the bands. This song impressed me just because it is different from what Scooter usually sings. Both bands have different approaches, it depends on what you like.

  • @DJshannen

What have scooter to do with gothic, häh ?

SISTERS allways mother of gothic during the 80ies, dumbhead !!!!

  • @Maddog1MM

    Dear MADDOG, dumbhead ?

Who gave you the right to be impolite to people you don’t even know?

I’ve said before that everything is a matter of taste. Therefore, you can’t judge a person only by that. I have the right to have an opinion and to write it here. I like some good gothic songs, but I also like other kinds of music.

  • @SinisterLonging No not The Who...kidding..who'd you mean?...can't be Eldritch...Rose Kennedy? ...you know the Matriarch of all the dead Kennedys, not the band....Camelot

  • @SinisterLonging Is Andrew Eldritch high?...does Rose Kennedy own a black dress??

  • Saw this lot in Birmingham(my home city,in 92 I think) and then again in Miami, same year, both great shows, but the Miami gig was more impressive 'cause of perfect anathema to the ho-hum,pink flamingo, plastic nature of living in South Florida...god I want to come home, can't be any worse than living here in"Paradise"

  • The official soundtrack to the goth movement.

  • 2 of my favorite SISTERS songs, I love this band, but I hate everything they did since Vision Thing! Still love my huge Mercifull Release logo tattoo on the back of my leg!

  • verdammt,..schunn widdaaaa es verfassungsschwein anziehe,..sowas,..ich höre,..ich höre,..ne,..jo,..naja,...calling marian,..neeeeeee,....die hab ich zuletzt gesehen,..in der hitze is schön compilern,..marion,..es ist heiß im licht,..abver ges geht,..noch,..ich drehe sie durch,...den error,..yes,..not a problem fpr me,..is is live,..dont trust on me,..okay,..i#an youz,.no,..yes,..okay,..not me,..okay,..ja,..jessesmaria,..was ich kann und was ich töte esse ich auchhhhhhhhhh,..pfui,..ich höre,..nee

  • Good stuff!

  • Awesome voice and feeling!

    I wish i could see them live...someday

    This is real gothic!!

  • Who gives a flying F as to what it SOUNDS like??? If you're that bored you can break everything down to a base level and we're all f*cked. Shut up! it's Sisters Of Mercy! Get a life dumb-ass!

  • Makes me want to go dance the ghost again.

  • Un seul titre à emporter sur mon île déserte marian

  • Amo essa musica! As duas na verdade, amo tudo de Sister.

O vocal do Andrew é simplesmente maravilhoso, a linha do baixo...é perfeito.

  • Amo essa musica!

O vocal do Andrew é simplesmente maravilhoso, a linha do baixo...é perfeito.

    Todas as músicas.

  • que belleza de musica julio de peru

  • שיר מדהים

    מזכיר את שנות השמונים הקסומות

  • Does enybody know why they sing a part of this song in german language? Did they have any connection to germany?

  • @SaiienII

Previous to forming the band Eldritch studied French & German literature at Oxford. He also speaks Dutch, Italian, Russian, Serb, Latin & Chinese!

It was synonymous of this era to associate this genre of music with the German language & culture, not least due to the success of many Germanic bands ( X - Mal Deutschland, D.A.F und so weiter).

  • @19nelson94

Hey, thanks for your explanation! :) It's really interesting!

  • this live album

is the first i've listened to

    it sounds fucking great

& this song is what caught me into the web of SOM

  • the best of the best!

  • Hey buddy! Everything sounds the same deal for you. Please don't u mixup the songs. Really, it is no personal and check in to any ear doctor. ok?

  • Love the sweat, the heat, the passion in his voice!

  • I like a song that has my name as a title :-).

  • God how I envy all of you who were there :(

  • in Berlin , Cölumbia Halle gesehn........einfach nur geil!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Wayne Hussey's backing vocals are great!

  • andrew you rule 4 ever. luv u always

  • GRAZIE PER AVERCI REGALATO QUESTA MERAVIGLIA........

  • @n00w7re Never heard or heard of The Sisters of Mercy covering "New Dawn Fades." Ever.

  • There is a similarity between the guitar melodies, yes. Wayne Hussey apparently was in charge of these. Ask him.

I guess Marian could work as some kind of counterpart to the Joy Division song, a "Look, this is how it should be done!"-kind of thing. No idea if this was intended to be so, though.

  • I think that n00w7re was saying that this song sounds like the SoM covering NDM, not that it is a literal cover. I disagree with that idea, the songs have totally different narrative structures, and I also think that it's kinda Joy Division-centric. But that's what they seemed to be suggesting.

  • @Elgrandeshit ...nor would i want to. Sisters>JD every time...

  • @Elgrandeshit

Sorry for late response. I didn't intend to start a war or something. I haven't said that it "is", but it "sounds like" a cover. Ok, it's not so obvious based on original NDF by JD. Instead, compare SoM's Marian with the cover by New Order & Moby. You may argue that the latter is more recent, but NDF was composed before SoM was even born, in 1980. I suggest you read Eldritch's bio on wikipedia. "Sisters of Mercy were, however, accused by the press of plagiarizing Joy Division"...

  • @n00w7re YEAH YOU'RE RIGHT!, kind of the same bassline... I read back in about 1984 that this was about "Marian" and the automatic writing at Borley Rectory.

  • @n00w7re

I don´t see the similarity to "new dawn fades" at all, though i really like both bands.

  • Comment removed

  • @n00w7re you f**king berk

  • @n00w7re @n00w7re I know Robert Smith was heavily influence by Joy Division & Ian Curtis. If that doesn't say something - I don't know what will!

Have you ever heard, DESSAU'S cover of "Isolation" (produced, 'Al Jourgensen' & 'Paul Barker' of Ministry)? If not, you should give it a listen. It's probably one of DESSUA'S biggest "hits." All in all, I think they did a pretty good job w/ the song.

If you do want to check it out you can find their video for "Isolation" right here on youtube!

  • Why was he flagged? Ian Curtis is a fucking martyr!

  • @xxxtobyx3

That's it. And he was also a fucking genious!

  • "Marian" is evocative, musically complex and evocative using distinctive exotic eastern sounding chords. "New Dawn Fades" is maximalist, does not use a drum machine, and is very bass-heavy. Ian Curtis's voice is very individual, awkward and melancholic, nothing like Edritch's. "Marian" is pacier than "New dawn Fades". "Marian" is a highly personal song, "New Dawn Fades" like almost all of Joy Division's lyrical content is much more abstract. Marian is more repetitive than NDF, and has a coda.

  • @ianern32 This is insightful comparison and u deserve credit, although I can't agree with "maximalist" - "rich" or "expressive" are more appropriate to me. I know I should remove the whole "cover" thing as it has different meaning, but I stick with the inspiration. SoM has performed excellent music as one of the best rock bands ever. That's it for me. Still they've been inspired by JD and Eldritch never publicly recognized the obvious. I could elaborate a lot on this, but space's missing here!

  • love his voice, he has the same quiver as bowie!

  • I was there! Loved this band from the first time I heard them. Even though once Patricia Morrison joined, I used to get mistaken for her a lot!

  • perfect guitar... wonderful song

  • Wish to c them LIVE again somewhere.........fuckin love em

  • amazing, and always have been

  • envy the goths there

  • Stunning. Goth pioneers in that they made it their own, not trying to be Iggy Bowie. Truly original sound with the Eldritch voice like the rising dead. This line up is still the ultimate goth band.

  • Ich war 12, mein Bruder 17. Er infizierte mich von Anfang an mit den Sisters und den Pogues !! Viele Bands folgten, aber Pogues und Sisters sind immer noch stetig am Start !!!!!

MARIAN !!! Kannst du mich schreien hören ???

  • mhmmmmm,... <3<3<3

  • Was ich kann und was ich könnte

    Weiss ich gar nicht mehr

  • Quite simply one of the very greatest bands ever to go onto a stage! BRILLIANT! They are only equalled by The Mission, Zeraphine and Ikon. Porro

  • This sounds like Peter Murphy meets The Cure.

  • How many times did I watch Wake in the 80s-90s?

    (A: Lots)

  • @TheSodiumhaze You could always try sites like Amazon, failing this, it's always worth to search a few torrents. Oh wait, someone's already uploaded it onto YouTube - search "Wake Sisters of Mercy Royal Albert Hall 1985"... And then there are programmes to download YouTube videos :)

  • Kult Kult Kult,

  • Where that whas, this concert? Wo war das Konzert?
