@scorpios814 Great comment... I could'nt have said it better myself. (n00w7re has been annoying me so much that I chose to remain silent.) The big Curve/Garbage battle is the one that always cracks me up. Superficial similarities between those two bands but thats about it. And I like both bands... No need to fight.
@Elgrandeshit Weren't Curve well gone when Garbage appeared? If not I'm well mistaken, not for the first time, like when I considered Bauhaus to be contempories of McFly.
@Elgrandeshit I am humbled by your knowledge! But, ooh, you just said "has". A band is not a thing, aarrggghhhh!!! It's "have". Curve have commented, The Killers have done something or other, Hall and Oates have split up. Aaarrrgghhh!, Why do people adopt these ridiculous fake-cool phrases? Resist, everyone resist, don't be a sad sheep led by record companies! Say "have" and give The Man the bird. Again: aaaarrrggghhhh!!!
@scorpios814 I agree. I was just debating someone who kept calling Nosferatu a ''second rate sisters wannabe'', and while I see the inspiration in the band a bit, and completely disagree with elitism, I can somewhat understand why some people are like this. With such a powerful and captivating genre we're listening to, you can't help but have an immense pride for the music. As for me, I love all types of Goth rock, that can be from Nosferatu, to Fields of the Nephilim, to Vendemmian, etc.
Here's a link to support my claims: scathe,demon,co,uk\histgoth,htm
(add the w's at the beginning then replace , and \)
And here's the comparison that says all: "Heart and Soul" by Joy Division vs. "Body and Soul" by The Sisters of Mercy. Both musics look very different but you can't deny inspiration, not only in the title. Furthermore, Ian Curtis sang with his heart, while Andrew Eldritch sings with his body.
Another vfgood version of this is the Hellraiser Remix, here on the tube. This is a highly recommended listening for ur ears. So are some of the most underrated tunes by Sisters of Mercy incl. "Summer" and "We are the same Susanne". Enjoy the lives!
Sorry guys can someone tell me the date and place of this live performance? I've seen SOM 3 times and their performance at that times (1991, 1999 and 2005) was not so good.
WOW - What an artifact, considering that SoM seems to be a spent force. (If I am proven wrong, it would be quite a pleasant surprise.) These are dark times and, one would think, classic goth music would fill the void. Heck, even the Cure and DM remain somewhat active/interested. I've heard that the environment for a SoM comeback is there but that Andy has unrealistic financial demands. Anyone care to report on that?

@66Templar Most famous of the hoax occurrences at Borley Rectory were the 'Marianne' writings. Originally scribbles by Marianne Foyster's adopted daughter, Adelaide, a visitor pointed out an arrangement of letters and suggested a 'ghost' was trying to spell Marianne's name. Marianne had a craving for attention and admiration and soon her name spelled in full appeared. Her husband then wrote "What do You want?" on the wall and so the correspondence with the 'entity' began with "Please help get".
@landolt64 I compared the songs, not the bands. This song impressed me just because it is different from what Scooter usually sings. Both bands have different approaches, it depends on what you like.

Previous to forming the band Eldritch studied French & German literature at Oxford. He also speaks Dutch, Italian, Russian, Serb, Latin & Chinese!
It was synonymous of this era to associate this genre of music with the German language & culture, not least due to the success of many Germanic bands ( X - Mal Deutschland, D.A.F und so weiter).
@SaiienII Aside from the language studies, Eldritch has said (in an interview in Melody Maker music paper) that 'Marian' is a girl from Hamburg he once knew (before he moved there). Hence the German lyrics. She was probably a hooker on the Reeperbahn took his virginity or something but, anyway, all Eldritch says is she was a girl he knew.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Sounds like the cover of Joy Division "New Dawn Fades" by The Sisters Of Mercy. Or at least, "Marian" is heavily inspired from this title. If you like this, you could also try the original and other covers by New Order feat. Moby, and by Still (John Frusciante, Josh Klinghoffer & Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers). As ever, Joy Division created a powerful original song that inspired many great artists. Ian Curtis suicide is one of the worst events ever in the entire history of rock.
There is a similarity between the guitar melodies, yes. Wayne Hussey apparently was in charge of these. Ask him.
I guess Marian could work as some kind of counterpart to the Joy Division song, a "Look, this is how it should be done!"-kind of thing. No idea if this was intended to be so, though.
I think that n00w7re was saying that this song sounds like the SoM covering NDM, not that it is a literal cover. I disagree with that idea, the songs have totally different narrative structures, and I also think that it's kinda Joy Division-centric. But that's what they seemed to be suggesting.
Sorry for late response. I didn't intend to start a war or something. I haven't said that it "is", but it "sounds like" a cover. Ok, it's not so obvious based on original NDF by JD. Instead, compare SoM's Marian with the cover by New Order & Moby. You may argue that the latter is more recent, but NDF was composed before SoM was even born, in 1980. I suggest you read Eldritch's bio on wikipedia. "Sisters of Mercy were, however, accused by the press of plagiarizing Joy Division"...
@n00w7re YEAH YOU'RE RIGHT!, kind of the same bassline... I read back in about 1984 that this was about "Marian" and the automatic writing at Borley Rectory.
@n00w7re@n00w7re I know Robert Smith was heavily influence by Joy Division & Ian Curtis. If that doesn't say something - I don't know what will!
Have you ever heard, DESSAU'S cover of "Isolation" (produced, 'Al Jourgensen' & 'Paul Barker' of Ministry)? If not, you should give it a listen. It's probably one of DESSUA'S biggest "hits." All in all, I think they did a pretty good job w/ the song.
If you do want to check it out you can find their video for "Isolation" right here on youtube!
"Marian" is evocative, musically complex and evocative using distinctive exotic eastern sounding chords. "New Dawn Fades" is maximalist, does not use a drum machine, and is very bass-heavy. Ian Curtis's voice is very individual, awkward and melancholic, nothing like Edritch's. "Marian" is pacier than "New dawn Fades". "Marian" is a highly personal song, "New Dawn Fades" like almost all of Joy Division's lyrical content is much more abstract. Marian is more repetitive than NDF, and has a coda.
@ianern32 This is insightful comparison and u deserve credit, although I can't agree with "maximalist" - "rich" or "expressive" are more appropriate to me. I know I should remove the whole "cover" thing as it has different meaning, but I stick with the inspiration. SoM has performed excellent music as one of the best rock bands ever. That's it for me. Still they've been inspired by JD and Eldritch never publicly recognized the obvious. I could elaborate a lot on this, but space's missing here!
Stunning. Goth pioneers in that they made it their own, not trying to be Iggy Bowie. Truly original sound with the Eldritch voice like the rising dead. This line up is still the ultimate goth band.

@TheSodiumhaze You could always try sites like Amazon, failing this, it's always worth to search a few torrents. Oh wait, someone's already uploaded it onto YouTube - search "Wake Sisters of Mercy Royal Albert Hall 1985"... And then there are programmes to download YouTube videos :)
I miss this. I've kind of moved past my goth phase, but coming back and listening to Sisters, Bauhaus, and others, I realize I really miss it all.

Does enybody know why they sing a part of this song in german language? Did they have any connection to germany?
SaiienII 1 year ago
@SaiienII

Hey, thanks for your explanation! :) It's really interesting!

Ian Curtis suicide is one of the worst events ever in the entire history of rock.
n00w7re 1 year ago
@n00w7re Never heard or heard of The Sisters of Mercy covering "New Dawn Fades." Ever.
Elgrandeshit 1 year ago 26
There is a similarity between the guitar melodies, yes. Wayne Hussey apparently was in charge of these. Ask him.
I guess Marian could work as some kind of counterpart to the Joy Division song, a "Look, this is how it should be done!"-kind of thing. No idea if this was intended to be so, though.
eotunun 1 year ago
I think that n00w7re was saying that this song sounds like the SoM covering NDM, not that it is a literal cover. I disagree with that idea, the songs have totally different narrative structures, and I also think that it's kinda Joy Division-centric. But that's what they seemed to be suggesting.

@Elgrandeshit ...nor would i want to. Sisters>JD every time...

@Elgrandeshit
"Sisters of Mercy were, however, accused by the press of plagiarizing Joy Division"...
n00w7re 11 months ago
@n00w7re YEAH YOU'RE RIGHT!, kind of the same bassline... I read back in about 1984 that this was about "Marian" and the automatic writing at Borley Rectory.

I don´t see the similarity to "new dawn fades" at all, though i really like both bands.

@n00w7re @n00w7re I know Robert Smith was heavily influence by Joy Division & Ian Curtis.

Marian is more repetitive than NDF, and has a coda.
ianern32 10 months ago

Wenn das Konzert in Ostberlin war in der 'Max Schmehling Halle' (so hieß des vor der wende) war ich mit 15 oder 16 dabei.
Raadok 2 years ago
