Exactly. In a state as fast growing as Queensland, we need not just local news, but local current affairs too.
Two "local" news services just don't cut the mustard in aggregated regional Queensland in 2009.
There also needs to be more local news on the Gold Coast, and there needs to be a return to good quality local current affairs programming, not stuff like having two QLD journalists for a East Coast TT filled with fads, recycled stories and celebrities.
Don't mean to play the devil's advocate, but there really isn't much money in television these days & cuts to local content is just another example of this. Also, in Seven & Nine's case, they're mostly owned by KKR & CVC who's only goal is the bottom-line. And in Ten's case; we all know the deep shit CanWest are in these days.
Looking at Nine Perth & Adelaide though, I'd say maybe WIN is localism's only friend, atm.
It supports local production, two competing local current affairs programs, and a rich local sentiment, thanks to 7 Perth's attachment to the community.
Ten's woes will only be solved by a return to Australian ownership, but I am tipping a rough patch for the Australian TV industry in the next few years, with implications similar to the 1990 recession.
Private equity ownership may lead 7 and 9 to realize that there is nothing like local ownership...
Oh I miss the Channel 7 open days up at Mount Coot-tha, the Seven Shop in Grundy's Surfers Paradise, the local celebs (eg Boris) turn up at local school fetes, Wombat's twins reporting about Brisbane events etc, State Affair broadcasting up and down the QLD coast...they were the days where Seven was a major part of a kid's life - now nothing. It is their 50th anniversary and all the history seems lost.
That's whats missing, the lack of interaction that 7 has these days, compared to the 1980's, where you always knew that Boris was on, and people had (and still have) that attachment to their childhood...
Their fiftieth is something you don't want to screw up with Brisbane wanting nostalgia, of the good old days, when 7 was Brisbane, unlike today.
Remember what it was like to spot local celebrities at shopping centre promos,Mc happy day and much more? We could relate to local shows on Saturday mornings and rush down to Mirage grand prix at Oxley to see Boris,Agro and many more 'live telecasting ' just to meet them it was exciting as a kid! Sea World was also a host of the 7 Super Saturday show along with Amazons at Jindalee. Live tapings in the studio and competitions to be in the audience!
Sea World... Ski show ended the other day, only got two and a half minutes for a Flashback on 7.
Over 40 years of Gold Coast history that was the ski show, that drew people from far and wide at least deserves a hour TV special, nothing less, not what it got.
One thing I agree with is respect for the legends that made you what you are today, who paved the way for today's crop of talent will take a station like BTQ-7 far.
How about BTQ confess to the mass destruction of films and tapes from its vaults in 2006? Many shows and history have been lost forever and now all we see is stupid Sydney based shows that locals here cannot relate too!
Btq staff at the phoen switch havent heard of Wickety Wak or Boris and thats sad! You would think that the staff working in those areas would have heard of the local stars who put BTQ on the map?
Ring BTQ and you will see what i mean! To be continued..............
Good job kuttsywood! Totally agree... I'm sick of Queensland TV jobs going down south. We need to be expanding not decreasing our media base.
